El Capitan and IPhoto??

So, I updated my system to El Capitan and LOST IPHOTO?? What is up with that? I can't even find my photos that were on IPHOTO.

I tried to update and the Apple Store tells me it's NOT AVAILABLE!! I use IPHOTO for my business, and now I'm DEAD IN THE WATER!!!

Anyone have a solution??

Wait a minute before you purchase any apps that plug-in to Photos: all of those that I found and tried out offer only partial solutions, and together they cost much more than they are worth it and at least as much as a copy of Photoshop Elements that no longer plugs-in as an external editor.

You guys appear to be very versatile with Photos, can you please help me to solve the following issues:

a) for a website, I need to resize my photos as close as possible to 600 by 800 pixels and a thumbnail to less than 20 kb. Can you do that in Photos without lengthy trial and error? With Photoshop as external editor for iphoto that was a piece of cake!

b) I usually take photos on location with my big camera, and add one shot with my iphone to get geo-data. In iphoto it was a simple job to copy the locations across to the other photos. How long does it take you in Photos???

c) In iphoto I could sort my photos by location - a simple click on the world map. How long does it take you in Photos to find all photos from the same location?

Photos is a free give-away app. Photoshop is $500 application. It would want to be more powerful, wouldn't it?

As fast as it takes to copy the data from the iPhone snap (command-c)

Select the pics I want to edit, go command-i

then click in the location section and paste (command-v)

As long as it takes to type the name of the location in the search box... and with auto-complete that could be as few as two or three letters.

You know, I don't actually use Photos. It's not the app I need for the work I do with my images. But I managed to figure those out in a couple of moments.

Terence,

appreciate your help. Just some small corrections:

1. Adobe Photoshop Elements is 80 quid, as much as 3-4 of the Photo plug-ins together that offer only partial replacement

2. You are right when you use a named location, when instead you use geo-coordinates your copying results in Photos will be wrong.

3. See no. 2: when you actually have geo coordinates, your photos will be split into different location names and it will take you some time to find them back. With iphotos you only needed to look at the map and click.

Thanks for your responses, Terence Devlin.

I don't know what version I had of iPhoto. I never updated it so it must be the original when I bought the computer in 2009.

When I imported pictures to iPhoto, they always appeared on the Photos screen with headings and text, so there was no need to make Albums.

However, I followed your directions for creating albums using command a and n. That worked easily. Thanks

I wish that I could just add headings and text to the photos as they appear on the Photos screen. Having to make albums in order to add text is additional action that must take up more space.

An odd thing about "Albums" is that some of them are empty even though I recall the photos that should be there. Strange.

Yes, I do have a "iPhoto Events" folder. These are arranged alphabetically, not chronologically.

Fair point, but it's still free v 80 quid. It would want to be more powerful, wouldn't it?

I've seen some reports of this but it's by no means universal.

With iphotos you only needed to look at the map and click.

The question was how to quickly find, not how to find on a Map...

Just like iPhoto, Albums in Photos take up no space at all. They simply reference the images in the Library, so no, there is no wasted space.

You can drag them into any order you like.

Thanks, Terence Devlin, for your advice on manipulating the items in "iPhoto Events." Putting them into the order I want (that is, as they originally appeared on my main screen when I opened iPhoto) would be a time-consuming project because I have several hundred folders. I'd have to open each folder to see the date that I put at the end of the title.

What I think I'll do is to use Photos as a temporary spot for all the photos that I prefer to view in a diary-like format. Those I'll move into someplace like Picassa, etc.

I'd welcome suggestions of a permanent "home" for my family photos from anyone on this site.

Control (right) - click on the image in the email and select to Photos from the contextual menu.

The photo will bypass the Last Import album and can be found at the bottom of the All Photos window.

If you had some version of iPhoto 9 on your Mac at the time you upgraded to EC follow the directions posted by Tererence Devlin in this post:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.
