Apple TV (4th Gen) won't play iTunes content from library

Surely the knuckleheads at Apple don't honestly expect us to re-rip or convert hundreds - thousands of movies just so we can talk to our remote......right?

I think at some point you just need to stop hanging on to the past and move into the future with Apple.

I'm encoding everything in H.265 HVEC now. Much better file sizes at similar quality makes for more room on the NAS.

And maybe the Apple TV will be able to play it some day because VLC on my Mac plays it.

Exactly. It might be true that MPEG-4 isn't the best choice anymore, but it's still a common standard that should be fully supported. If it works with OS X and iOS, it should work with tvOS.

Well...problem solved. I installed PLEX on my computer, my iPad, my iPhone and as soon as I take it out of the box again, the Apple TV 4. So far it's working absolutely beautifully. Shame that I have to do it, but it's quick, painless, and free. I suggest you all look into it before re-ripping.

My new Apple tv refuses to play hired movies from I Tunes, it keeps returning to the general screen.

I'm not going to rush to re-rip or convert anything. Chances are it's a straight-forward bug fix that will be addressed in the near term.

I have the same program and I'm using "The New Apple Tv" and my movies and tv shows aren't working. Please explain your steps that you are using.

brifly33, which program are you asking about the MACX DVD Ripper or Video Converter? For the video converter I have done this:

1. Drag movie from iTunes into the Video converter program.

2. Choose the New Apple TV (recommended) profile.

3. Run the converter.

4. Delete the movie from iTunes.

5. Drag the converted movie back into iTunes.

Those have been playing for me.

The ripper program i was talking about. I spoke with Apple and they said they are going to call me back but I think this is an issue with ATV4. Seeing how all my movies and tv shows play on ATV3 then it's the ATV4 that is the problem. I assume there will be a fix. Until then I'm going to keep doing the same thing I've always done and worse case scenario, I'll play my stuff on ATV3.

All I did different on the Ripper was to use the new Apple TV profile. The couple of DVDs that I ripped played fine. But like you, all that I ripped before the new profile do not play on 4th Gen.

I've re-ripped using both of the new "new apple tv" option and neither will work. The 2 movies I'm trying to do are San Andreas and Magic Mike 2. However both of those movies play just fine on my ATV3.

San Andreas was one of the ones that I ripped. Did you pick the new apple tv with (recommended) after it? That is the one that I use.

I'm retrying again. I'll also add that i rip it with the subtitles because my bf is from Brazil so he doesn't want to miss the conversation. I'll let you know if this works this time.
