Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup. Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was "dead". It wouldn't wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing. I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

iPad, iOS 9.1, This is an iPad Pro

So first off i DONT have this issue and never had since i got it 12.11.2015.

Maybe it still helps to figure out the cause so i add my 2 cents...

- Model: iPad Pro 128GB (no LTE)

- Location: Germany

- iOs: 9.1.x whatever the newest official is, didnt install beta as i have no issues

- Setup: fresh device without iCloud or iTunes backup, used existing Apple ID

- Backup: also didn't setup iCloud or any other backup

- Loading procedure: I always fully drained to 0% until it turned off and loaded to 100% since i got it (4x times). Never loaded while using it. Did not switch on Airplane mode while loading.

- Apps: Few Games (10) and some Apps like Infuse, VLC, IMDB, Skype, Google Maps, YouTube, SkyGo

- Other stuff to mention: watched some trailers/movies, played games a few hours, surfed with Safari, tried the split screen few times, conntected to MacBook Air (Late 2010) and checked iTunes to check if connection is working

I've had the lockup issue and didn't do a restore. I set my ipad up as a new device and downloaded apps from the store. I think there is something though to the network adapter driver or syncing. I'm the one that mentioned swapping cables worked for me. In fact last night my ipad was at 27% and it charged up to 100% overnight with no lockups using the lightning cable from my apple tv 4.

Let's just hope ios 9.2 fixes things.

I've had it lock up with apps running, with no apps running, charging from < 40%, charging from < 98%.. BUT all the lockups occurred with the original cable/charger combo that shipped.

One interesting thing to note, I plugged my original cable/charger into a surge protector that had nothing else plugged into it, and I haven't experienced any lockups the last few days when using it. So not sure about that... (The other lockups seemed to happen when I had an additional iphone 12W charger hooked up to the same surge protector).

UPDATE: After having this issue the first 2 nights - waking up to a black screen after charging and downloading while I slept - I've not had the issue since. I have not changed any of my settings. I've been using the Apple Case & Smart Cover (in covered position usually but not always) while charging. I have never backed up to iCloud, but I do download misc apps at night if I see them available for download. My initial and only set up so far on this iPad Pro has been a restore from backup from my previous older iPad 4th Gen. I sync while connected to iTunes on my iMac. I do NOT set it to Do Not Disturb nor do I put it in Airplane mode while I charge - I just leave it ON as it is all day but usually covered with smart cover but not always since the smart cover arrived last Friday - and one night I had about 400MB of downloads with smart cover open and woke with no issue at all - so my initial theory that it was related to large downloads while connected as the cause is not very sound. iPad Pro 128GB Wi-Fi with Apple Case & Smart Cover.

gvd1, I read your post, but I don't believe this is the issue (or at least not commonplace to the rest of us). I have the Wi-Fi + LTE version of the device and tried the Airplane Mode overnight charge to see if that's the issue. No dice. The night prior (first night with the device) it downloaded a lot of updates from an iPad 4th Generation upgrade, much like your situation and I endured the same issue which prompted me to explore community solutions eventually leading me here. I agree with the many members/contributors to this thread that we need to inundate Apple Tech Support with assistance demand signals in order to get this issue the attention it deserves. This is an otherwise resplendent piece of technological art... I am hoping this minor inconvenience has a quick fix in the next update.

NOTE to everyone here who has who has found a solution: wait a week.

I tried a solution that usually unscrambles software nightmares: factory reset followed by setting it up "as a new device." As I customarily carry 200+ apps on my device, all neatly organized in folders, the "new device" solution is a royal pain in the derrière.

I was desperate enough to do it did it last Saturday, and went through four blessed days of no dead screen...until this mornkng. It's baaack!

Gotta strong feeling it's a firmware bug that has nothing to do with cables or power supplies, but with some background process crashing and causing a cascade of failures. Maybe it's some app I installed or some switch I flipped...

I began following this when I read a news article linked to this issue. This was before I received my iPad Pro. Somewhere in the replies, someone asked for those not seeing this issue to respond. I received my iPad on the 16th and it has had two overnight charges now without any issues. Here are the details:

1. 128Gb WiFi Space Gray

2. Charging overnight with the cable/charger that came boxed with the iPad Pro

3. I set it up as a "new" device... I did not restore it from the backup of my old iPad 2

4. I have iCloud Backup turned Off

So two nights of charging without issues so far. Keeping fingers crossed.

SO far so good.... SUCCESS !!

after the update to 9.2. Beta3 the problem seems to be solved .... At least the first recharge from about 45% to 100% was without any deep sleep issue.... With connected cable for the start after recharge...

I will keep posted if this good behaviour continues....

Device : 128GB silver, cellular, LTE active, backup from my old ipad air2 by itunes with some older lightning cable and not by cloud service....

BUt I am still not sure if I will use the exchange service or keep my "buggy-one"....

BTW shall we name this issue ??? Maybe "chargegate" or "cablegate" or "deepsleepgate"... ???? Whahahaha...- just joking

But seriously i think that Mr APPLE really shoud improve the Quality Management system and should NEVER put such bullshitty FW on the market !!!

Hope somebody from the FruitCompany from Cupertino reads this !!!
