Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup. Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was "dead". It wouldn't wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing. I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

iPad, iOS 9.1, This is an iPad Pro

FIX: Apple support had me restore Ipad via iTunes and set up as new not with any back up. This fixed the issue. I would say there still needs to be a software

update but they found that when they had me run a diagnostic there was a corruption in the back up..

So basically restore ipad and redownload iOS 9.1 with iTunes, and set up as new. Took about an hour.

Hi There,

My new ipad pro has the same problem, but so far only when it is connected to the smart keyboard. When the smart keyboard is not connected, the ipad charges just fine, no reboot needed. I had my ipad pro over a week, charging fine, and as soon as I got the keyboard, and I charged with the keyboard, the problem started. Now I am back to charging without the keyboard, and it charges fine again, no hard reboot needed, so far.

Best,

G

I had the same problem your having right out of the box until someone posted on here on using a different cord instead of the one which came with the iPad Pro. I tried using the lighting cord which I brought from Amazon and I never had the problem since. Another post post on here said they use their old cord from their iPad Air and the problem went away. I suggest you use a different cord that didn't come with the iPad Pro and see if that works.

yes sir. In Settings follow General -> Siri and toggle "Allow 'Hey Siri'" to the on position. Speculation is this solves the power down problem because the iPad stays alert, waiting for you to say "Hey Siri".

I received my replacement iPad Pro in the mail, restored from iCloud, charged for the night and it was unresponsive in the morning. I flicked on "Hey Siri" that day and haven't had a problem since (5 or 6 days now)

I totally understand the charging issue. I've talked with several people that have had the non-charging issue and I tell them that in fact is defective hardware somewhere and they should get an exchange for it. The issue this thread is focused on is the apparent non-charge, but after a hard reset (holding the home and power button for 20 seconds to reboot the ipad) the ipad works again. The ipad should show a full 100% charge from sitting on the charger all night even if it's not waking up properly. If you are having issues with the ipad pro restarting during use constantly, or not charging, then I'd recommend starting a different thread or searching for one that matches that problem because that would be a different issue and needs to have visibility into it.

So far those of us investigating it in this thread have found 2 solutions that seem to work without fail:

- Install ios 9.2 beta (hope that ios 9.2 comes out soon).

- Turn on Siri, and Turn on Hey Siri. (both need to be on).

The other things people in this thread have attempted that seemed to work for some but haven't provided as much success:

- Try a different lightning cable and charger.

- Try isolating the charger and cable to it's own outlet.

- Ensure that the volume is not muted.

- Turn on airplane mode with charging.

- Turn off back up to icloud.

- Turn on back up to icloud. (Yah, which shows that's probably not the issue).

If you are having an issue that isn't a full charge over night and then a blank screen when you go to turn it on then it sounds like you have a totally different issue and you should RMA that thing with Apple and get a different ipad pro.

For the record the full charge, black screen issue has been found to be on ipads that were new set up out of box with apps downloaded, ipads that had the icloud backup restored, ipads restored from itunes backup, etc. I.e. it doesn't matter how it was set up. If you talk to an apple genius and they are unaware of this issue or try to lump it in with a different issue, point out this thread to them (not sure if they'll read through it though).

All we can do is hope that ios 9.2 is released soon at this point. The iPad Pro is actually magnificent, and for those people with the problem in this thread it's a 20 second fix generally once a day, and a 3 second fix for those that turn on Hey Siri. Any other problem is completely unrelated to this thread and shouldn't be lumped into the same area.

Hope that helps.

Restarting an ipad that is 100% charged because the screen doesn't wake up because of a software glitch (remember, this is the first time apple has put technology into an ipad that reduces power useage through turning portions of the screen on and off) doesn't make the ipad pro a dud. It makes it a machine that needs a software fix, for which there is a temporary solution, and potentially a full solution once ios 9.2 is released.

This isn't the same issue as the surface pro 4/surface book issues (again, for which there are TONS).

If you are having problems with the ipad pro actually charging, then check for a different thread or start a new one. A black screen after a non charge isn't what this thread is about. This thread is about the ipad pro having a black screen (a non waking screen) after a full charge. Any other issue outside of that would be a hardware issue that should probably be an RMA/exchange issue.

Restarting your ipad on a blank screen after a night's charge requires that you hold BOTH the power and home button down at the same time for around 20 seconds or until the Apple logo shows up. If the apple logo doesn't show up after that time then you have a hardware issue which should be fixed by exchanging the ipad. This is not a general my ipad doesn't work thread though, it's a thread regarding a specific problem which is that the ipad charges up (even up to 100%) but after some time the screen does not wake from sleep. The fix is quick (a hard restart) and the ipad doesn't have anymore issues until the next time that you charge it up.

Also, the ipad is a tablet, it's not a laptop, thus people who complain because they're leaving it plugged in constantly need to recognize that. I get almost a full day's use out of an unplugged ipad. (although, I'm not talking about 8 hours of constant gaming).

Finally, for all those people who keep complaining that Apple is unresponsive about this please reference the link: If your iPad Pro stops responding and the screen is black - Apple Support

i.e They are AWARE of the issue and are working on a fix. I have dealt with every major computer company (Dell, IBM, Compaq, HP, Packard Bell, Gateway; although, when Ted Waitt was CEO they were great, Frys, CompUSA, BestBuy, Toshiba, etc.) and Apple is the only one that in general makes things right for the consumer the majority of the time. In fact, I just took a 2011 macbook pro 17 in for the defective video card/logic board problem for which they are replacing for FREE because enough people have had the issue. Just because apple requires a large window of consumer visibility for a problem doesn't mean they aren't responsive, or don't want to make things right, it means they're ensuring that the issue is widespread and reproducible.

I have two Ipad Pro 128 gig -- one with cellular, one with wi-fi only. Both had to do the reset thing after recharging over night. Thanks to this thread -- i did the 1) turn on siri and 2) Hey Siri trick -- both ipads have been working fine -- they have been working with this temporary fix for the past two and one-half weeks. As indicated in previous articles, the 9.2 iOS should fix the problem. Hope this helps. Rudy.

There's been a lot of solutions that have been posted on here, and almost every other page points out the solution that works for 99.9% of everyone. There's maybe one or two people that have stated that turning siri on and enabling hey siri didn't work for them and the lack of information with what their settings are makes it impossible to know if it's truly not fixing their issue or if it's something else.

Ultimately the two solutions that work are:

- with ios 9.1, turn siri on, enable hey siri. done.

- if you want to sign up for a beta account (free) you can and then you can install ios 9.2 beta on your ipad pro, and everyone that's done that hasn't seen the issue recur.

It is disconcerting for the ipad pro to not turn on initially, and thankfully you found this forum for which you have now learned that you can do 1 of two things to fix it, or if you don't want do do either of those, just do the hard restart (hold home + the power button down UNTIL the apple logo appears). It's generally a 15-20 second fix once a day then because you're just restarting the ipad, no harm, no foul.

Apple stated that they're researching the issue so that they can fix the problem and they explained how to do the hard restart.

If your iPad Pro stops responding and the screen is black - Apple Support

Learn what to do if your iPad Pro doesn't respond when you press buttons or tap on the screen, and the screen is black.

To get back to using your iPad Pro, force restart it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Updating your iPad Pro to iOS 9.2 or later might prevent this issue from occurring in the future.

Might fix the problem! Fingers crossed it does.

Well, just in case all of you have been holding your breath for the real "fix" -- which we were and are hoping to be iOS 9.2 -- Here is Apple's statement regarding the current situation --excuse the large type -- it was a copy and paste thing -- but read the bottom line in blue -- it will make you blue!! That being said, so far my iPad pro is working fine -- but who knows!!! Rudy

Also this is in regards to the issue where the iPad pro is 100% charged but won't turn on or appears not to turn on until you do a hard reset. I haven't had the issue where the battery is drained. Hopefully my research helps some others out there, although if you don't have an extra cable or a cable from an appletv 4 then it may be hard to verify this yourself. I will be doing more testing to see if I can completely validate this. Will be leaving my ipad on the charger tonight with the Apple TV 4 cable to validate that it works beyond the 4 hour 100% charge test that I did. Again, charged to 100% and then left on the charger for four hours with the screen off. Cable that comes with the box causes the ipad to have to be force hard restarted. Apple TV 4 cable and it doesn't do the blank screen non wake up screen, it wakes up properly with the press of he home button or the power button, or unplugging the iPad pro.

Nov 16, 2015 5:29 AM in response to bbawbrey

Sounds like there are two possible solutions, 1. try a different cable (I've had success with an Apple TV 4 cable) Or 2. Try to install the beta of iOS 9.2.3 as that seems to be fixing it for people as well. I myself am using 9.1 and the Apple TV 4 cable and not had any lock ups since. I have not had any lockups since switching cables. I think there's a problem with some of the cables being shipped with the iPad pro's.

Nov 16, 2015 9:45 AM in response to kennethfromcaledon

Changed cable to charge with overnight and all was fine. I'm still running iOS 9.1. Did not turn on airplane mode or anything, left it as usual.

So I am guessing it's 9.1 with this new cable as it seems that the .2 beta's fix it.

Oh forgot to add. I used an existing charging cable (non-apple but certified) and did not have the issue this morning. I used the long lightning cable that came with the iPad Pro on my iPhone 6 plus last night and no problems with that.

So I am still thinking but reading everything here that it is either this new long cable, or iOS 9.1 or both relative to the iPad Pro ONLY. I'm not going to upgrade to any beta or take my iPad into the Genuis Bar. Going to wait for an iOS update or other solution from Apple. Otherwise, it works fine.

iPad Pro 128 GB Wi-Fi. As many users here, I'm having the same issue - I just wanted to add that the first two nights I had the iPad Pro I had connected it using my older iPad's charger & cord and both nights I'm fairly certain I had some big downloads as well - iMovie, Keynote etc... over 650MB or more of downloads - not sure that has anything to do with this issue, but thought it worth mentioning. On a side note, I only sync to my iMac 5K when connected - I do not sync over Wi-Fi nor do I sync to iCloud - since I've read some folks say stop syncing to iCloud to fix the issue - I never have yet still had the issue. To recap - my first 2 nights had big downloads while charging using my older iPad's connecter/charger to wall outlet. Both mornings had to do hard restart. Then, I started using the new lightning cable/charger and have not had any major downloads. I have not had it happen since - not to say it will not happen again - but my initial thought was it was related to heavy downloads? I'm on a slow DSL network using older gen Airports. Not very scientific, but it is my current thinking.
