Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup. Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was "dead". It wouldn't wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing. I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

Get ready for another surprise! I tried my SD card reader to transfer new photos from my camera to my new iPad Pro this morning for the first time and it won't work either. Worked perfect on my iPad 4 the last couple of years but not on my new iPad Pro. Come on Apple! What's going on here? We are your supporters! We buy your best new products! Please, for the love, say something! What's up with these fixes? New download coming?

These are real people with real problems who bought your new product and you won't even acknowledge these issues? Maybe if we all together start warning the general public in every forum out there that you just don't care! All these problems are real and we get nothing from you? I for one have been a supporter of Apple for years and for this new iPad up till now! However, my opinion is changing fast because you seem to think you're just too big to bothered now and we can all just go jump in the lake? Think again!

Disable iCloud backup not enable. Here again what helped me. Thanks to the one who posted it here.

I did the following which immediately resolved the lock-up problem and remained lock-up free for several nights.

  • enabled Siri
  • disabled backup to iCloud
  • disabled automatic sending of diagnostics to Apple
  • disabled "Do Not Disturb"

Well I too had an issue right out the box. Ipad pro charger did not work. I USED A DIFFER CHARGER FROM IPAD AIR AND IT CHARGED WITH NO ISSUES. THE ISSUE SEEM TO BE THE CHARGERS. TILL TODAY I am using my ipad air charger till I get go in and swap per warranty. I noticed once I unwrapped the charger and inserted into ipad pro it did not work. Also I noticed with ipad charger that the cable has to be inserted in ipad pro first then plug charger into wall outlet. Did not want to charge when plugged into wall first

Hello!

I thought I would contribute to this discussion with my experience, both good and bad.

I bought a 32GB iPad Pro silver at Best Buy the very first day that it came out. I did not have any problem with my iPad Pro at all, and I put my old iPad Air backup on it. I used the iPad Pro charger on it, but did not let the charge go past 49%. I let it charge, and watched it like a hawk for the first week, to see if it would fail.

When I get a new iPad, I like to run hardcore tests and benchmarks on it, to see if I can purposely get it to fail (I am a PC geek like that).

I ran:

3D Mark (original)

3d Mark (Sling Shot)

GFX 3.1 Open GL

GFX OpenGL

Base Metal (Free and Pro Version)

GeekBench3

I also ran a few 1080p movies on the iPad and a few games, and music. Everything was as smooth as butter, until yesterday, for same reason, after I bought a couple of games, and tried to back it up, it had the black screen problem after 97% of me charging the device that everyone keeps describing. I had to force a hard-reset on the iPad, in order to make it come back to life (5 times). This morning, I just decided to wipe the entire thing clean, and start fresh, to see if that would help. So far, everything is going okay.

I want to think this is some type of firmware problem. I wanted to share my experiences after reading all of these problems everyone is having and I am hoping this helps. Let me know if anyone had a similar experience to mine. Thanks so much, and God bless. :-)

I agree with Danfromcanton that Apple have made no public announcements and no apologies, they haven't, to my knowledge, contacted any purchasers of the iPad Pro (they know who and where we are) to advise of this major fault and have left ut to us to try and get a resolution from Apple support who told me to return the unit - its expensive and its obviously flawed - previously I have loved Apple but at present I have doubts. I sent my faulty iPad Pro back and i'm waiting for the replacement if that goes blank then I will send that back and get a refund until they have sorted this major problem!

I do not use iCloud backup, and have never used it, and yet my Pro still crashes.

However, my Pro did not crash last night, and I did not do anything to try to fix it. However -- and this might be completely unrelated -- I did not play any videos (movies) yesterday. Every night that it did crash for me, I did previously watch a video, but not yesterday.

I just thought I'd chime in here with another "me too".

I bought the 128 gig gold from Cabot Circus Bristol on the Thursday evening of the launch. Curiously, one of their demo units was out of action with a "plug into iTunes" restore picture!

Mine has locked every time I've charged it to full, requiring a hard reset. I've just turned Hey Siri on as there's anecdotal reports of this working. If it does, I'll repost.

I'm not getting a full charge as described by some. Not the black screen by most. I've not heard of anyone running it as a new iPad as having the problem. Most appear to have restored it from a backup. It also seems that depending on what you restored from will cause one of the two problems. It seems to happen while on a charger and it's been dormant for a period of time. This is usually the state it is in when it starts backups to the cloud if you have that feature enabled.

Many of us set up our ipad pro's as new, and then re-downloaded apps from the app store. I did that, and had the lock up for about 3-4 nights in a row. I did a test, switching cables, and then haven't had an issue since; however, I'm not wondering if it had more to do with a spotlight/siri indexing of all the items on my ipad rather than an actual hardware issue. Maybe ios 9.2 is less aggressive or they've fixed some of the indexing issues, but given the randomness as to who's having issues, and the random fixes (hey siri, cable swap, nightmode on/off, airplane mode on/off, etc.) with the only reliable fix being an upgrade to ios 9.2 (beta) it seems most likely that this is just a software bug.
