How to give feedback to Apple Support Communities

I had a post removed by Apple Support for this reason:

We've removed your post "Why doesn't Apple allow an iPhone to do WiFi scanning?" because it contained either product feedback or feature requests.

The Apple Support Communities Use Agreement here: Apple Support Communities Use Agreement

Says under item 2. Submissions:

3. Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Constructive feedback about product features is welcome as well.

So I am confused. It appears that Apple is not following its own policy. The policy says feedback about product features is "welcome", but my post was removed because it discussed product features.

Who do I ask about this?

Thanks.

No problem...

I actually fell feEl exactly the same way as you... it seems possible that the statement "...take action against any account, at any time, for any reason." means that the rules are "malleable" to suit any given situation anyway

If you follow my actions (and those of many here), you will do what you see fit within the realm of common courtesy and your current understanding of the "rules" - and let the chips fall where they may > then "NEXT?" 😉

All good advice. Thanks.

I do tend to be a bit literal about rules. Or rather, I want words to mean what they say. If Apple chooses to be arbitrary about how it enforces the rules, then this probably isn't the best place for me. There are lots of other places where I can help people. I go in and out of periods spending a lot of time online trying to help folk, and I've generally not done it here. Maybe I instinctively knew that I could not quite trust Apple, or maybe I just felt more comfortable in smaller venues. My experience with folk here in the last couple of days, with several wonderful exceptions, seems not very friendly.

There is, indeed, a bit of rough and tumble here. Not everyone is..... gentle..... with their criticisms or advice. However, most people mean well and, if you can get past the gruff exterior, knowledgable and helpful. It would be great if you stayed but, if it's not a good fit for you, good luck.

And, in a circuitous logic, this thread is about Apple policy, so probably doesn't meet the Terms of Use, which means one can't even ask about how to use the forum properly without breaking the rules. That's not friendly at all. It's big-brotherish. Which is a funny thing to say about the company that did the "1984" commercial. But apparently true. And not doing good things for my respect for Apple.

If that were the case, then the thread would probably be gone. This part of the forums is specifically set up for questions such as this. You can certainly ask how things work. What gets you into trouble is when you start asking "why does Apple think it's a good idea to do it this way".

I didn't say it before, because I didn't think it nice, or fully relevant, but I think my previous post was reported because I disagreed with the reading of the Terms of Use with some other users. This was petty and does not move knowledge forward. I think this goes beyond not being "gentle". It's rude, and not in the spirit of the purposes of having a forum like this, and a power trip for whoever was involved. It's not a big deal that the thread was deleted, but I think it is a big deal WHY the thread was deleted.*

Best,

*Edit: I don't mean this "why" in the sense of Meg St._Clair's comment about why Apple does things, but the why of why it was reported, and the how of how Apple's policies are applied.

You just now noticed 😉

At one time, I really felt like we had all gone down the rabbit hole and the Red Queen was shouting "Off with their heads!"

Believe it or not, I feel like the rules have actually been 'relaxed' a little in the past month or so...

knock on wood...

We should all thank the Lounge Lizards for advocating for the general population = I do!

Actually, I suspect the thread was deleted not so much because you disagreed with another member but because it was becoming contentious (and not primarily on your side) and, as it was borderline, it was simpler to remove the whole thing. My evidence of this is that your similar thread, with minor adjustments, is still here.

Trust me on this, the Hosts make up their own minds. Higher level users are expected to play by exactly the same rules. We may know how to bend them a little better but the Hosts still smack us down when we cross the line.

it happens all the time... "water off a duck's back" is now my policy

Feb 16, 2016 9:30 AM in response to babowa

I was actually working on a post (at least thinking how I'd write it) about how I am now more than a little afraid of posting on these fora. I did take babowa's advice and write to the email address in the Terms of Use. Here's what I got back today:

Hi Winston (WinstonE)

Thanks for participating in our Support Communities.

We mistakenly removed this thread. We apologize for the inconvenience. The link to the thread is: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7458816.

Again, this was purely an accident, and we’re sorry for the error.

Thanks,

Apple Support Communities Staff

I'd asked essentially what I asked in my original post again, why a post asking about a feature was removed for asking about a feature when discussing features is encouraged in the Terms of Use. Apple has redeemed itself some, even if certain forum users have not. I'm still leery of posting here, but less so because of Apple.

Thank you to the Apple Support Communities Staff.

Good luck.

Wonderful to hear!

And, I just now saw this (from the post above yours):

it happens all the time... "water off a duck's back" is now my policy

Disagree wholeheartedly; I was quite upset when I got one (a long time ago); the second one (recently) was an error and was reinstated. I prefer working within the posted rules/guidelines.

I tend toward your view. I have on occasion spent a good amount of time trying to either compose a post or researching an issue to help someone. If that gets deleted, it can make it feel like this site is not worth the effort.

Don't misunderstand. I am happy that you got to the bottom of your missing post = "a mistake"

don't let it bother you (see the "duck's back" statement) - stuff happens (especially in the "workplace"), and sometimes...

"... it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you’ll understand that.”
