iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

I have the same problem with mail, Safari, and messages. Links work with the gmail app. Links work in Chrome but only with a long click to get the option to open in a new tab. It appears this has happened before with 9.2.1 but I could not find an answer that fixed the problem. I do not think it started until 24 hours after the update. iPhone 6s+ 128gb 9.3.

Sounds crazy, but I may have figured it out and don't want to jinx it. I had the same problem on my 6s on 9.3. Did several restores as new and it worked for a little while and then the same issue. Went to apple and they replaced the phone with one running 9.1. Once again, worked at first and then knce I started loading apps, it locked up again. I read through these posts all day and stumbled upon the Wikipedia theory. I wiped Wikipedia from phone and iTunes and restored phone back to new and loaded 9.2.1 and everything is fixed. 24 hrs later and still good. Fingers crossed and hope this helps!!

I've been working with Apple support via Twitter and phone calls. On the phone they told me to turn off Javascriptin Safari - and that actually allows links in Safari to work now. They did acknowledge its a proble with JavaScript but they haven't developed a fix for it yet, and you can't turn off JavaScript in Messages or Mail. See below response I got from their Twitter account.

"Thank you for providing us with those details. We’ve heard reports of the issue and it’s currently under review. We don’t have a solution at this time but we’d like to get your case to a Senior Advisor so they can collect some data to assist with the investigation. To get started we’d just need to gather your name, phone number, time zone, and the best time to reach you. We can set up a callback to have an advisor contact you directly.

i just bought the 6s and am having horrible issues. Constantly freezes in mail, Safari, Facebook, Weather app you name it. I'm so mad that I bought this dumb phone. Should've stayed with my 5 or bought a Samsung. I've tried everything even factory reset and that didn't work. Monday I'm calling Apple and telling them to fix it or refund my $300.

Problem:

Some apps, like "Booking.com" app (that is a repeatedly verified reason casuing the bug for me and my wife) seem to be incompatible with iOS 9.3 and Safari. Most probably it has a Safari plug-in in the app bundle that make it (and the whole iOS URL opening system) hang. So this way any app that tries to open a link will hand - Mail, all browsers and some third party apps are affected.

Solution:

(A) if you did not have installed crap apps (e.g. "Booking.com", "Wikipedia", some other "Wiki..." apps) and have backups:

1) reset all content and settings

2) restore from iTunes/iCloud backup

3) enjoy

(B) if you have crap apps (like "Booking.com") installed in your backups:
1) reset all content and settings
2) set up as a new iPhone

3) DO NOT INSTALL "Booking.com" app
4) enjoy

PS. Will post updated list of apps that may cause the bug.

PPS. Simple settings reset, deleting apps that cause the bug, rebooting won't help - only solutions posted as (A) and (B) work for now.

For people who wanna try, booking.com seems to be part of the problem... Check it out above! Will try to do a new backup after deletion of booking.com and full reinstall on my ip6s+ to see if it works (worked for my wife's ipod at least)...

IF this is not settled within 48hrs, Apple will have lost 5 customers just in my household and will persuade friends to leave also...

we shouldn't endure this treatment!

I just spoke with Apple Care in Germany.

They told me to deactivate Java as a work around. We know this already and we know already that it did not work for everybody. For me it didn't.

Furthermore they told me to

- connect the iPhone to iTunes whilst pressing both the Power- and Homebutton.

- Then wait until the iPhone appears to be in maintenance mode.

- Then press the "Actualization" Button in iTunes (NOT the Recovery one which will cause a loss of all data).

- After actualization it should work properly once again

I am unable to try it by now because I`m travelling but I wanted to give you that advice already.,

Good luck, I´ll try it tomorrow night on getting back home.

Until Apple has a solution I'm using

1.- CloudMagic as my main email client. Manage 4 email accts and use Mail to clean Junk & Trash, just easier for me.

2.- Chrome and Mercury as my main browsers (in CM you can choose Chrome instead of Safari for the links) ,

3.- Fantastical as my suplementary calendar and

4.- TunnelBear as my VPN connector.

Remember its aparently an iOS problem so iPad and iPhone solutions may be helpful to you.

This has been working >90% for over a month so have made my iPad Mini 4 useable again until, perhaps sometime this year, Apple fixes iOS.

Cheers

Andres
