iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

I have the same problem with mail, Safari, and messages. Links work with the gmail app. Links work in Chrome but only with a long click to get the option to open in a new tab. It appears this has happened before with 9.2.1 but I could not find an answer that fixed the problem. I do not think it started until 24 hours after the update. iPhone 6s+ 128gb 9.3.

Just for the record, in case 9.3.1 is still buggy.

- Apple support page of 31 March (today) If hyperlinks don't open in Safari, Mail, or Messages after updating to iOS 9.3 - Apple Support

Twitter (full web version) had numerous stickies up top...mobile Twitter version less so...and that's where I found the link to the 9.3.1 Support page (not Google)

- According to ArsTechnica http://arstechnica.com/apple/2016/03/poorly-behaved-app-causing-crashes-and-link -problems-for-some-ios-9-x-users/

the suspected mechanism is what's detailed in this: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/Security/Reference/SharedW ebCredentialsRef/

- Pretty good rundown of steps to do to prepare to upgrade here (in between irritating ads): https://www.gottabemobile.com/2016/03/31/10-things-to-do-before-installing-ios-9 -3-1/ and they also gave a rundown on why you might want to hold off still, and what the attractions might be once all the bugs are ironed out at https://www.gottabemobile.com/2016/03/31/4-reasons-not-to-install-ios-9-3-5-reas ons-you-should/

- If I understood the posts here, some did try what Ben Collier posted to defeat the Universal Link/Shared Web Credential bug, and it didn't work for them. In fairness, Ben said it seemed tricky to get the timing right and that it could take several tries with his workaround routine. Developers will probably get the word if the implementation of the , but there may be other apps out there that need reworking. If this is the real root cause.

RE: your comment about lots of rants in between descriptions of issues, and lots of "me, too" with just the platform and iOS versions (if that)...

Yes, I had thought at some point that it might serve a purpose for Apple to provide a sound-off icon to label that type of thread versus a head-scratching icon for the threads in which there was some attempt at troubleshooting. In a Facebook page dedicated to "Help Find Hannah Graham" there were a few who read and thought before they posted, and really used the thread to try and collate information. And a lot who just emoted. Different threads or the ability to filter would definitely have helped there. At least here we can search.

Also, it might be useful to have an alternate UI that permits one to collapse the rants and leave the ones that contribute something open so it is easier to follow lines of thinking.

By the way, honest, not sarcastic question: Did the 2.2% crash rate include link failures that didn't actually crash the app or the phone? (Just curious, because ths thread is about inert links rather than crashes, and there was no link in your post to the stats for me to answer my own question). TIA 🙂

Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 a few days ago. Also having the same problem on Safari, just locks up when trying to open a link from any browser. Also similar problem on Firefox for iPhone but if you hold your finger down on the desired browser link Firefox will offer opening the link in a new tab (select 'Open In New Tab' then tap on tab [7] button top RH screen, tap on latest tab.) which at least allows you to link to what you are after. At least Firefox dose not lock up like Safari.

Hope this helps

Oops just found iOS 9.3.1 upgrade now loading.
