Battery problem after update to IOS 9.3.1

I updated my Iphone 5 to IOS 9.3.1 about a week ago, whereafter the battery drained within 3-4 hours. I thought that the battery finally packed up and ordered a new one !

The problem still exists, now the battery lasts max. 5 hours.

Any solution apart from switching off many of the standard features ?

iPhone 5, iOS 9.3.1, null

@robnbill

Do you have - by any chance - a corporate/managed device with a profile? My issues started around mid April - roughly two weeks after enabling device management. Then again on a brand new 6s (setup as new devices without restoring any old settings/data) after roughly two week.

Can you share what reports did you select in Xcode/Instruments? I tried with imported energy logs collected on the phone but they do not seem to contain details about apps. They helped confirming my suspicion that the phone is not sleeping enough, though.

Thanks!

I think I have a solution!

If you go to Privacy-->Location Services--->Share my location, then turn it off

AND

If you go to Privacy-->Location Services--->"Com.apple.springboard" and turn that off, (set to never) then the quick drain sorta stops.

I was loosing 50% idle over 3.5 hours, so far this has stopped. I was also noticing that my **** location services was ALWAYS on.

So there you go! Hope it helps!!

This makes sense - I looked into it and was amazed at the number of things that want to keep track of where you are!

I am cautiously optimistic...I didn't turn the entire "Location Services" off (that would also turn off "Find My iPhone", but I did go into Privacy-->Location Services-->System Services to turn off things like "Location-Based iAds". Also, since I had gotten a recent message from AT&T saying my cell data was almost used-up (MOST unusual), I turned off "Wi-Fi Networking" (also under "System Services"). There are little arrows next to the items that have recently used your location, so that may be an indication which ones are draining the battery. I think the key is to turn off as many items as you can until you notice a marked improvement.

This is very similar to a battery drain problem I had with updating the OS on my old 3GS... The new OS default had something turned on all the time that was active - I think it was Bluetooth. It was constantly "fetching"....

Something else to look at. "Settings-->Battery" will show the proportion of battery used by each app in the last 24 hours or 7 days. So Mail and Safari have been draining my battery big time! I am hoping that Location Services is the culprit.

Ditto with my laptop, since I recently upgraded to OS 10.11.6 - huge battery drain. So I went to: System Prefs-->Security & Privacy-->Location Services-->turned off "Safari App" and also under System Services-->"Details" turned off "Safari & Spotlight Suggestions". Crossing my fingers that this will work. Especially since I am down to 9% and must now sign off....

One issue I thought was gone with the newer iPhones (but still there)... is that every time you open an app, email, safari, etc. it is STILL OPEN in the background. You just don't see it.

Try this after you log into your phone:

  • "double tap" the Home Button
  • You should see all the items you left open (but didn't know it) - layered like a deck of cards
  • Just "swipe" each item upwards until they are all gone from the screen. They are now "closed" and not running in the background sucking the life out of your iphone!!!
  • Tap the middle of the screen (or tap the Home button) to get it back to normal view.
  • Get in the habit of doing this at least once a day. It should help!
  • If that is not enough, you should also check Settings for Location Services (see my reply to blaisefromnewyork)

@robinfromedgewood, don't do that! It may make the problem worse and app loading slow. Apps appearing after double tapping the home button do not necessarily "run" in the background. It's primarily a save state, that is important for some apps. If you remove it, they may need to re-load data from remote servers and consume bandwidth and more battery power.

You can turn off background activity for apps under settings.

After resetting the phone as a new one, voila! Lame. I guess one of my apps suddenly started to go crazy and suck battery and data. It has been 24 hours since I reset (I actually did this about two weeks ago but the problem reappeared) so far so good. I also updated to IOS 10. Looks cool but it will take a little getting used to.

eclipseguru, actually it was advice I got from Apple several years ago. Doesn't seem to hurt or slow down anything that may need to reload that I can see. Anyway, I did do it, but it didn't solve the battery drain problem.

Your last sentence got me thinking, and though you didn't say specifically where to turn off background activity... I went to Settings-->Cellular (roaming already is off), and selectively turned off anything I thought might be a little too "active" for my needs. Since I am usually within wi-fi range, I also turned off cellular for Safari (the usual suspect). If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen there is a button for "Wi-Fi Assist" so Cellular will kick on when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor. I turned that on.

Guess what...MY BATTERY HAS MAINTAINED 81% - FOR HOURS NOW!! Eureka! I have found nirvana!

Once again, cautiously optimistic...until the next OS upgrade overrides my settings....
