Cannot login when Filevault is enabled

Has anybody else had the issue where they have to turn off filevault encryption in recovery mode or they cannot login?

The issue started a few weeks ago, when I started having to turn off the computer and reset PRAM. This would be needed to get my built-in keyboard and trackpad to function at the login prompt after coming out of sleep.

This last week even the PRAM reset would not correct the issue and thankfully the password reset function of the recovery mode led me to disable my filevault encryption. This made it possible to login and get into my desktop.

I then went through a few basic checks from terminal to check for disk errors or file permissions errors and it came up clean.

I then turned encryption back on for my HD and the problem came back at the login screen.

I have since turned off filevault until I can figure out what is going on.

I did notice that this problem could be tied to my use of my MacID software that allows me to use my iPhone fingerprint reader to unlock my MacBook.

I started using that software at roughly the same time that this issue started occurring. Has this issue been noted in the past?

If so, what are the best work solutions?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), Using MacID software for login

@autosuggested Yes, the hardware replacements permanently solved the problem.

Also, when I had the problem, I had similar success logging in with an external keyboard and mouse (both bluetooth and USB). That helped mitigate the problem until I was able to send the macbook in to Apple for repair.

I had this same problem. I did a complete wipe of my hard drive and reinstalled Sierra (no file vault, no additional software). Restarts and logins worked fine. Upon enabling Filevault, the keyboard and trackpad would stop working during login/startup. This also appeared to affect network booting at the apple store - Genius saw keyboard and trackpad issues when trying to connect boot from a restore image.

We sent the machine in for repair (Macbook Pro 13, early 2015) and it had the following parts replaced:

  • I/O Board (605-00570)
  • Cable, I/O, Flex (631-2864)
  • Trackpad Cable (631-01309)

So far, this seems to have fixed the issue, though I'll likely do another wipe of the hard drive and reinstall Sierra again to double check. I'll post again if the problem returns, but hopefully the info above helps others resolve the issue.

Same here. What's even weirder, it hanged there, and I waited for a bit, while working on my old MacBook air, the machine suddenly shut down itself. It used work with an external keyboard and trackpad. However, no luck recently. So, I was so afraid of turning the machine off. Or need to have my backup machine with me all the time. Which is not acceptable. Apple's quality has dropped so much recently.

This is definitely related to FileVault. Which I found a reasonable explanation here:

The weird thing is, the system doesn't recognize built-in keyboard and track-pad before log-in to the system. Could someone please help me out? Thanks.

I started experiencing the same issues on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) [MacBookPro12,1] soon after I upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra. If it makes any difference, here are my current OS and firmware versions.

System Version: macOS 10.12.2 (16C67)

Kernel Version: Darwin 16.3.0

Boot ROM Version: MBP121.0167.B18

SMC Version (system): 2.28f7

For the record, my problem is that in the following scenarios the built-in keyboard and trackpad are almost completely unresponsive to the point of being unusable.

  1. Standard macOS boot login screen while FileVault is enabled
  2. Boot to macOS Internet Recovery Mode (hold --R at boot)
  3. Boot to Startup Manager (hold at boot)
  4. Boot to Apple Diagnostics (hold D at boot)
  5. Boot to Apple Diagnostics over the Internet (hold -D at boot)

Strangely, the built-in keyboard and trackpad work perfectly well when I boot to local macOS Recovery Mode (hold -R at boot).

Also quite strange: I managed to successfully log in using an external USB keyboard and mouse (and quite a bit of patience). Once I was past the login screen, the built-in keyboard and trackpad worked perfectly well. No issues even waking after sleep. However, the login screen problem reappeared if I restarted or shut down.

The following procedures unfortunately failed to solve the problem.

  • Resetting NVRAM
  • Resetting SMC
  • Erasing and reinstalling macOS from local Recovery Mode

Disabling FileVault solved the standard boot login issue but did not solve the others. Obviously this is not an ideal situation given that my internal drive is now unencrypted.

Unfortunately I'm just one month out of my one year warranty. Even still, I might take it into Apple to have a look in the new year.
