iOS 9.3.3 broke iBooks store on iPad

After the 9.3.3 iOS update (7/19/2016), the iBooks store will not open on my iPad Pro 9.7, nor will it open on my iPad Mini 4. My books works fine, just the Featured, Top Charts, etc. will not open. iBooks works fine on my iPhone 6S and iMac.

  • Try a forced restart: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the restart.

Yes, there seems to be some kind of issue with the iBooks store on iPads, and apparently only on iPads.

It works for me on an iPhone 6, but not on an iPad Pro 12".

You can however for now use the iTunes Store App Search facility to find iBooks, and buy them directly from within the iTunes Store App. They should automatically load onto the iBooks App after purchase.

I have the same problem on an iPad Pro 9.7, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 4. Tried a complete settings reset and then a restore from iTunes backup followed by turning WiFi off and then on again in the Control Center. This caused iBooks to function again briefly, but upon quitting and restarting iBooks the problem returned.

I have had problems with my iPad Pro 9.7 and 12-inch MacBook that required sending each unit to Apple while both were less than one month old. They replaced the iPad and the keyboard assembly on the MacBook, but I am sorely disappointed in Apple's quality control -- though I am grateful they do stand behind their products.

I hope we don't have to wait long for a fix to this iBooks problem, but I won't hold my breath. Even my close to 30-year-long loyalty to Apple is being sorely tested.

Good news, at least for now. I just checked iBooks and it has started working again even though I did nothing to fix it. All I can do now is hope it keeps working, and that it starts working for everyone else who posted here. Good luck!

UPDATE: Well, that didn't last long. I just double-checked iBooks and now it is not working again. **Throws hands up in the air and walks off shaking his head.**

Tried - it does not work; my Overdrive app from the library system works fine so I can download epub books on the iPad - just not on Ibooks app. May go to the Genius Bar next week but I have little faith in them. This is like cable - all of a sudden a feature like On Demand does not work and Cox tells you that you are the only one and wants to redo everything and within a day you find out that it is a thousand customers, not just you.

Same here with the addition of my books not syncing to the iPad as well. I bought a book last night on my iPhone and it's now not showing up on the iPad. It shows up on the MacBook so it's clearly just an iPad thing. Like a couple of others here I saw a glimmer of hope that I had somehow fixed the search features (Featured, Top Charts, Top Authors) but it went back to just a white screen the next time I opened iBooks. Have done everything that everyone else has documented here. Just throwing my card on the pile too....
