I just went through this same issue with my IPad Pro 12.9 and thought I’d share the solution I found. I have AT&T and when trying to add data, it said SIM card expired. I could not add new data or manage the AT&T account I had on my previous iPad. I tried all of the suggestions found here and in other forums, but non worked. I then contacted AT&T and was told to go to: www.att.com/ipadlanding

Here you will need to enter your IMEI and ICCID (found in Settings, General, About). Next, set up a new account and select the plan you want. When you pay for your plan and reach the confirmation page, shut down your iPad and restart it. When you go back into Settings and Cellular Data, your SIM card should be active and you should be able to access the plan you just set up. This worked for me, hope it helps others!

I just returned from a trip in Mexico, and had this problem. A quick search of the forums didn't help, but I found the solution. I went back into the setting, selected celluar and picked select a new plan, T-mobile - then already have account. The gears spun for a bit and I closed it and the sim card no longer says expired and everything is working again. Hope this helps the community

Expired how?

The sim card is what tells the iPad what cellular network to connect to and with what settings. They don't normally expire.

Your service plan with your cellular carrier may have come to an end, in which case you would need to contact them to set up a new plan.

Or if you are using a pay as you go sim, you would possibly need to add some balance to access the internet over cellular again.

Your sim card does not affect any info or data stored in your iPad. It is only used for cellular Data for internet access when away from wifi.

From what I can find, its a glitch.

You can try removing the sim card and putting back in, and see if that makes the message go away.

Is it correct that the Apple iPad Air 2 SIM card expires?

Or Ask T-Mobile for a new Sim card with your current service transferred to it.

As long as you have internet access, when away from Wifi the "Expired" message is not really meaningful.

I don't know if this matters I have a iPad sim card!

I have taken the sim card out and still expired..

I can't get internet access when away from wifi, will not work.

Thanks for your help!

It appears to me that you are a T-Mobile 200MB/month subscriber. That 200MB free for life plan does not allow users move SIM card from one device to another. In other words, your SIM card is tied to the iPad device and you can't use it on a another device. That is to prevent users from abusing their 200MB free data for life. Similarly, you can't use 10 T-Mobile SIM cards to bump your free data to 2GB on the same iPad.

I've had same issue with 'SIM card expired" wording under IPad Pro Cellular. Cellular link stopped functioning while I was updating e-mail. Visited my Service provider - ATT. Tech said SIM cards don't expire or break. Tech pulled and reset SIM, no luck. Tech also confirmed I'm paid up on my Unlimited Data Plan. Tech said the SIM card was an Apple SIM card. Only thing new was latest IOS update yesterday-11/6/16...

APpreciate someone's suggestion that I use my WIFI as (I do as needed) but normally use cellular, that's why I buy Unlimited Data.

Would suggest Apple look more carefully at the issue vice continuing to push off on Service Providers. From several Apple forums we can see there have been recurring issues with the IPad SIM card

for quite a while.
