Update:
I have to admit. After following the steps posted by Macrumors (and here), I no longer have the issue. I commute to work by train about 1.5hrs each way. When I was having the issue, the phone was basically useless on the trip as It never held a signal for more than a few minutes. On the same commute, my iphone 6 had no issues. I followed the below steps and on 4 trips I now have zero issues holding a signal as I move at 65mph from tower to tower (constantly). It stays at "LTE" and acts as I would expect it to act.
I am a Verizon user but I suspect all carriers may have this issue in a few regions.
Basically:
- Settings > General > Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE > Select "Data only" (this is temporary!)
- Back out of settings app
- If your service provider has something called "HD voice" or some feature that is supposed to enhance the audio quality of your call, have them turn it off. for verizon, you just go into your account online and can manually turn it off then re-add it. (turning this off is just temporary)
- Turn your phone off, wait 10 minutes
- Turn your phone back on, wait 10 minutes
- Turn "HD Voice" back on with your carrier/online in your carrier account settings
- Wait 15minutes
- Settings > General > Reset > "Reset Network Settings" This will restart your phone.
- Wait 10 minutes
- Settings > General > Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE > Select "Voice & Data"
-wait 10 minutes
- Restart phone just for good measure
All of the waiting I listed above is really just to make sure at each step your device is solidly connected to your carrier and any "handshake" with new instructions or settings are complete before going to the next step.
I would urge anyone who has tried this to try again and really give it time between each step. The process for me took a good 45min from start to finish. Again, im sure it can be done faster but I wanted to give it a full chance to settle in at each step and it all seems to be working now.
My assumption is that the carriers are aware and rolling out revised network settings over the air at different times to different areas and testing. Following the above steps ensures you are getting all of the latest carrier settings.
BTW my GPS seems to be working better now too. Waze has not dropped and is acting as it did with my iphone 6

I am having this issue as well. It's gotten worse. First noticed the GPS dropping out every 5 minutes using Apple maps on my regular commute where my iphone 6 had no issue. Then noticed I would always be in 3G or 1x or no service in areas I've never had issues before. Standing in the same spot, turning airplane mode on, then off put me back at LTE (full reception..full bars).
I agree with all that there is no way this phone is functional with this issue. It happens too often (multiple times a day) and thus makes the device completely unreliable.
