"Phone" app freeze on iOS 10

Good to know Apple is aware.

FYI, I have disabled Background App Refresh, disabled Outlook/Live Contacts (that is ridiculous), Bluetooth (also ridiculous), Reset Phone, etc. None worked.

If it is of any help to Apple to diagnose, my Phone app freezes most often after long periods of inactivity, a few hours, like overnight.

According to this post this issue has been around for at least six weeks and there have been several minor updates and no improvement in the situation. I spent several hours on the phone last weekend with a senior ios advisor who tried very hard to help but in the end had to settle for a log of the crashes (when the phone app freezes or the voicemail opens for a split second then closes). I followed up today and she said they were aware of the issue and were working on a fix. But there is no stated lead time. With the inability to use the phone (without closing the app and restarting) or the voicemail (same procedure to use) the question is how much longer do I suffer before switching hardware providers? After all, aren't we buying .... a phone?

A big no. I am running 10.1.1 and phone app freeze is still around and it is very annoying. Let us not say the issue is closed without proper confirmation.

Anyhow, my experience with this issue is that after I disabled my outlook contacts, the problem rarely happens. Before it froze 1 out of 2 times.

I've been using iPhones since the 3G with no problems until ios10 and the phone freezing problem. Please fix this core feature.

I have been having the sane thing since IOS 10. It's just getting worse and worse. Who needs all this extra baloney called features. I went Apple because I wanted reliability, now I find have it for the first time since my iPhone 4S. Please fix this. This is my last upgrade once it becomes stable.

@ANYONE. Can I restore to a 9.com backup on my iTunes?

I had the same problem after I "hidden" or "deleted" the contacts app. Even after restoring, when i put my backup back the problem still occured. Fixed it by reinstalling the contacts app from appstore.

I disabled Exchange accounts contacts for a few days and the Phone app did not freeze or crash at all. It was completely responsive and worked as normal/expected. I re-enabled the Exchange account contacts, rebooted the phone, left my phone overnight (I previously have always found freezes/crashes after longer periods of inactivity) and first thing this morning I opened the Phone app and it was unresponsive and crashed.

Good suggestion and I had faith to it.

Anyway, after doing this and on the second attempt or use, the phone froze again.

i got same issue here since i bought iphone7, it's getting very frustrating as i use sms/message everyday to our clients but kept freezing/crush. This is the first time i feel so disappointed with iphone or with new ios10😠😠

The Phone App freezing still continues after the recent iOS 10.1.1 upgrade too.. The only solution when the App freezes is to close the App and restart the App again.. This has been the case since the iOS 10 upgrade and it is quite frustrating especially when you have to make a quick call..

I also have this problem but it only occurs when i have my mail account set to fetch. If i set my exchange account to push, the phone app never freezes (so that's a temp solution).

I have opened a case in the Apple's bug reporter and the engineers asked for crash logs. I have provided them and currently waiting! Let's hope they manage to figure out a solution!

i have the same problem. apple seem to be in denial.. it began with IOS 10 on my i6 and 2 different i7s

I am seeing the hang and subsequent crash on apps as simple as Google search. The native text messaging and email are the worst - most frequent crashes. I am seeing slow starts and hangs in maps and Google maps using GPS for navigation.
