"Phone" app freeze on iOS 10

I think it is just a case of bad testing before they release a new iOS version.

Makes you wander what the heck is going on in there given they put so much scrutiny of the stability of software others write to run on their platform!

I have disabled all the Settings/General/Keyboard features and then re-enabled them. This included the Check Spelling and Predictive. This appeared to fix the issue but I also upgraded from IOS 10.0 to IOS 10.1. I've gone more than 2 days without a hang now.

BTW there is no OUTLOOK or GMAIL on my device and the contacts are not coming from outside sources. I have iPhone contacts and the default mail app that was pre-installed on the iPhone 5c as shipped from Verizon. I have a corporate phone with minimal additional apps, all from the App Store.

I had this same trouble with my iPhone 6s since I started using iOS 10 public betas. I got rid off betas and used iOS 10.1 with same behaviour : Phone app crashing randomly, app freezing ( either using Contacts, favorites , dialing a number , etc. ) .

In my case, this was fixed when I disabled Contacts from my Outlook ( Hotmail ) email account in Settings --- Email --- Accounts . I read that someone else disabled Contacts from the Exchange email account and fixed this same issue.

It definitely seems a bug within iOS 10.

I've reported this to Apple, hopefully they could take care of it.

I suspect this is a big problem for a lot of iPhone users. In my family there are 4 with the same issue..

I've been monitoring after I disabled Outlook contacts. Was fine for about 3 days and yesterday it froze. Will try to also disable Exchange contacts as you suggest.

Reported to Apple some days ago.

I disabled all of my accounts (exchange also if I need it to work), outlook, gmail, google contacts.

It freezes yet.

Unfortunately, It doesnt.. I am running iOS 10.1.1 and the issue still persist...I am testing out turning my gmail contacts off now to see if this resolves the issue

You are correct, however my experience is that after I disabled the outlook contacts, the issue rarely happens.

Now I can use my phone.app and most of the time without hazzle. I have not disabled Exchange contacts.

I suspect that Apple and Microsoft do not collaborate as they once did.

just to follow up - Apple is aware of this error.

They even called me several times just from reading my posting here, asked me to install something and press some keys when the error happened, and get the logs off my phone afterwards.

So hopefully they will find out what is happening.

I cannot even think of disabling my exchange account been an adminstrator but since a lot of people here mentioned Outlook.com, I have opted to deleted the outlook contacts on my phone and reboot my phone. I will test it out and respond. But this is appalling. Never had this issue with iOS 9 even with 5 emails accounts and contacts on it..

Apple really need to look into this...😠😠

i synced my contacts with an exchange account (lotus Notes) and had had freezes on Phone,Contacts and Maps very often.

now i copied the contacts to google and sync with google and in the last 6 days i had only one freeze. None with the phone app.😁

I just upgraded to 10.1.1 and it looks like the issue is finally addressed. Will confirm in following days.

I'm on 10.1.1.

After I re-enabled contact syncing with hotmail, my phone.app is frozen within 20 seconds.

Unfortunately it is as bad or even worse with IOS 10.1.1

Now I can see that the hang is actually a termination of the app, whether text or FB messenger or FB post or even entering a new contact. The hang if left alone will result in that app disappearing, not recovering.

I have done all the disabling and enabling. Basically IOS 10.x.x is crippleware!

There are two separate bugs at play with two separate solutions:

The phone bug causes the phone to freeze after a call, sometimes a couple of seconds, sometimes more. That's this thread. It seems to relate to having contacts on multiple accounts. I did a full reset and not had any problems since. See my post earlier in this thread. It seems restoring a full backup from a PC/Mac will continue the problem so you need to do the restore with iCloud.

There is a keyboard bug that crashes the iphone when typing in apps or messages. It also happens when you use "reply" before you've typed anything. This seems to be related to the spell checker. @Apple ... Just want to say I continue to have this problem with an iPhone 7, ios 10.1.1.

I know that I'm still raw from the effects of the bean counters and overall neglect of core demographics on things like the MacBook "Pro", but it sure seems like one of the most-used apps on an, ahem, iPhone, would be fixed immediately. I mean after all this device is supposed to account for a lot of Apple's revenue.

Problem: The app is often frozen when one switches to the app.

When the app freezes, one cannot click any button e.g. to dial or message a contact, or to switch to other panes in the phone app etc. Some other preliminary symptoms include a flickering screen noticeable on the contacts pane.

Strangely and possibly related - I've also seemingly been missing quite a number of calls lately even when I'm not on DND. It's becoming a problem for my business activities.

The only workaround I have is to force quit the phone app, though often enough the app is so frozen that the double click on the home button won't even bring up the app switcher. I've tried fresh-install of ios 10.1.1 to no avail...
