iPhone 7 Overheating

My new iPhone 7 overheats as soon as it starts to play video, download files, or play music. It even heats up when I'm taking photos.

I found the following article given a fix. I reseted the phone and started as a clean, new phone setup and still heats up.

Here is a quote of the article:

How to fix the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus overheating problem with these solutions:

  • There could be a good chance that a third-party application is the cause of the overheating Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The best way to check this issue is by holding down power and Home button until the screen goes black then remove finger from home while continuing to hold power. Once you see the Apple logo-hold the volume up button until the springboard loads. If the device is in Safe Mode the tweaks will be gone under the setting menu. If the problem is gone then you know it’s being caused by a third-party app. You can try uninstalling one by one to track it down or go for a factory reset.
  • Before you factory reset the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, it’s recommended to wiPe the cache partition of the smartphone (Learn how to clear the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cache). Select on Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. Then select on Manage Storage. After that tap an item in Documents and Data. Then slide unwanted items to the left and tap Delete. Finally tap Edit > Delete All to remove all the app’s data.

Is anyone else having this problem, and do you have a fix or solution?

Thanks,

Mine (my second 7 32gb following Apple replacing my first without question) hasn't overheated since I updated to 10.0.2 and turned off Emergency SOS in privacy>Location services>System services

Could be coincidence...I'll continue to monitor.

Everyone: just take it back to Apple and get a replacement. At least they'all know you're having problems. The more people that do that, the more attention it brings to the issue.

If it were a third party application it would have happened before I downloaded the new iPhone OS. My guess is that the new OS was tested on an empty iPhone, so when someone uses a relatively active phone, full of apps of all kinds, the new OS doesn't know how to respond to the added power-draw of the apps, and it overheats. just a guess mind you. When I posted this on FB, people started responding with, 'yes, it happened shortly after downloading the new OS' ...so Bob's your uncle.

Testing was done by over 1 million beta testers over a period of almost half a year, all with different numbers of apps. For example, I have 260 apps on my phone. My battery life is excellent, and my phone doesn't overheat.

And no, if it were a third party app it would not necessarily have happened before you downloaded iOS 11. Consider that there are apps that have conflicts with the new OS. Or that just the update process triggered a bug in the app that was always there but that code path had never been traversed. Apps are "told" when a new version has been installed; they need to do cleanup and possibly adjust settings. But there is no way to verify that this code works before they actually encounter an update.

Why is my I phone 8 getting quite warm

Because processing data generates heat. The more work it is doing, the warmer it will be. Unless the phone displays the message that it is overheating and shuts off it is normal. If you are charging the battery it will also get warm. And if you use it while charging the battery it will get warmer. The things that generate the most heat are:

  • Using mobile data or voice with a very weak cell signal
  • Playing games with interactive hi-rez graphics
  • Using the camera
  • Having the brightness way up
  • Combinations of the above

It sounds like something failed in the phone, probably the chip that controls charging. While this can happen randomly, most often it is the result of using a poorly regulated USB power source. It can also be caused by a battery that has failed suddenly, again, either randomly, or as a cascading failure due to the failed charger chip.

Let's rank your symptoms in order of importance:

1. WiFi greyed out

2. Phone getting warm

It's a little like saying:

"I've got this itch on my back that I can't reach."

"By the way, that shark just bit off my foot"

The first indicates a serious hardware problem with your phone. Anything else is irrelevant. You should start here: If Wi-Fi is grayed out or dim on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I called apple and they went on and on with the same old technical gibberish that they usually use. But ask to get an appointment at the Genius Bar and they will change your phone for free after going on and again with the same gibberish that apple care did. Or you can go to a specialist on iPhones and get a retrograde done to your phone. Usually cost around 20 to 40$ to get done but at least you'll get battery protection back.

I am also having this problem. I JUST got the phone activated YESTERDAY NIGHT! I am on the phone (not even playing with it or using any apps) and it's super hot!! I wonder if Apple is going to fix this!!!! I paid way too much money for this phone for it to be overheating not even after a full day of use (I was i clinical all day so I haven't even touched my phone).

Just got my Iphone 7 plus 128GB yesterday afternoon. I was in the process of restoring my setting from the Icloud and left the store because it was taking longer to restore. The reps said once your home and connected to the WIFI, it will continue to restore from there. I got to my car; plugged in my cable charger. I have noticed within 5 minutes or so, the back of the iphone near to the camera lens heats up (warm). I said, "a $938.00 brand new iphone behaving as such rightaway!" cannot be right. When I got home, i tried charging the phone via the wall charger, and it also heats up. I need to bring this back to the apple store ASAP. feeling a bit disappointed. I hope Apple could find a way to fix this... I hope its not a hardware issue like it had to my Iphone 6 plus' (touch screen IC's issue).

Did you get yours at Apple or via your wireless carrier? I'm on my replacement one since Wednesday. Yesterday, I reset my network settings. Followed by deleting all apps, reboot phone, reinstall app fresh, reboot. When I run this Sleep Cycle app, the iPhone 6 drained by 26% in 8h23m, while the iPhone 7 was drained by 40% while both are on airplane mode. Still same issue. This morning, I reset my iPhone 7 to factory settings. When it's charging it's still warmer than all my other iPhones I've previously owned. I'll reinstall the apps and will use it for a few more days. If that really fails, I would have to return the iPhone 7. I'd go through Verizon, but would Apple be able to replace this instead of me resorting to a refurbished version? It's likely I'd have to return completely till they figure it out. It would be a big disappointment, but it's a brand new phone, not to mention it's my second one because Verizon replaced the 1st iPhone 7 with heating up issues. Have you guys had any luck with yours recently?

Mero1980, are you working from a backup? If you are, then I'd recommend starting fresh without restoring from your backup in case it has incompatible files that some of the developers have yet to updated for iOS 10.0.2. Then give it 24-48 hours and see how it performs with heat and battery life. Although, I wiped out my new iPhone 7 and started off as fresh, it is still warm, but just not as bad. Same thing cannot be said about battery life as it still *****! haha. I'll just have to monitor my usage before I go complaining to Apple. They would've asked if you've done so and so. I could at least tell them, yep. Good luck.
