iPad Pro Keyboard "This accessory is not supported by this device"

128GB, 12.9" iPad Pro running iOS 10.1 (problem occurred with previous iOS too).

Smart Keyboard all of a sudden doesn't work. Error message "This accessory is not supported by this device".

Have cleaned contacts, rebooted, hard rebooted, and upgraded to the OS to iOS 10.1. No change.

It has randomly worked a few times, but seems random. One day couldn't type a web address in Safari, next day I could. Hasn't work a few days in a row now.

Thoughts?

I had all all this nonsense with my iPad Pro and its keyboard after about a years use. Seems the thing that activates the keyboard is a small reed switch (I am guessing) in the guttering just above the keyboard. When you snap the keyboard together ready for typing a magnet on the oposing face triggers the switch. Try it out! With the keyboard attached but not in the support guttering get a small magnet and rub it just above the 1 and 2 keys on the keyboard. If you are in an application that is waiting for input the onscreen keyboard will dissapear meaning that the physical keyboard is ready for typing.

What is clearly happening is that the magnetic strength of the top part which fits in the guttering has lost flux. Get that magnet which you were playing about with just a moment ago and rub it on the top part of the keyboard which mates with the guttering. Magnet flux is restored and the final act of snapping the keyboard to typing position should activate the switch. Works for me! I used a neodymium magnet, BTW.

Found this solution elsewhere:

Sometimes the magnetic area of the keyboard will become slightly bent. So slightly that you won't notice it off-hand. As a result, the three metal contacts in the middle will not be completely connected to the connectors on your iPad even though the magnets make it seem that everything is connected properly.

I merely bent the entire magnetic area a little bit to straighten it and immediately my keyboard started working again and with no issues.

This really was such a simple solution. Occam's Razor FTW!

I hope this helps others and saves people a trip to the Apple Store.

Best,

Michael

I have the same problem and I saw the reply about the fix with an Apple Pencil. I couldn’t get the keyboard to work at all, and I didn’t have an Apple Pencil, so in desperation I just plugged in the charge cable, not connected to a charger. I am now typing on s perfectly working keyboard, which continues to function if I remove the cable. What is going on?

I've seen some weird "fixes" listed, and tried a few of them, and some worked temporarily, others not at all. Your best bet is just to call Apple, get the okay to replace it while they're still doing it for free, and get a new one. It's just not worth suffering through the rituals of these strange fixes if you don't have to. The hardest part of getting the free replacement was reading the serial number on the keyboard. If that's a problem, put scotch tape over the serial number. That's what the Genius Bar folks did to be able to read it.

I have this problem as well. I think it’s a connectivity issue at the prongs that may be excaserbated by low voltage/battery. My solution has been to leave the iPad and keyboard connected on a flat surface as it charges fully. The keyboard takes it’s power from the IPad and I believe that power transfer is lost if the IPad gets too low.

I came across this solution purely by accident. I noticed that when I left it plugged in at the desk the Smart Keyboard would start working suddenly. Hope this helps. Also, bendgate. :)

I have an older iPad Pro, out of warranty of course. Same issue here even after reboots, cleaning, complete restore, and more reboots. No other issues with the iPad or other accessories. Finally looked for an answer and found this discussion. I'm not comfortable with bending the keyboard or applying magnets to it even if I owned any stronger than the pictures on my fridge. I take great care of my Apple products and very rarely have any issues. This is a bit frustrating, but at least Apple products are superior. Even so, nothing is infallible. If you live near an Apple Authorized Service Center, take it in there. If not, do as I did and contact Apple Support online. After walking through the process I was connected with a Senior Advisor who said they are investigating similar reports of this behavior. So, if you are having this issue please contact Apple and get set up for being part of this investigation and finding a resolution. If enough of these keyboards are having the same issue, Apple may recall it or set up an exchange program.

They are already doing exchanges at no cost. I called first. Got a case#. They didn't need to escalate it. All they needed was the serial number. Once they had that, they exchanged it for me at the Apple Store, no questions asked. The keyboard was not quite two years old. It was quick and easy. No hassle. They would have actually mailed me one, but I couldn't read the serial number. So I had to take it to the store.

I have had this issue for about 3 months now and now it does not work at all. I was all for getting a new ipad pro but I gave one more thing a go.

I simply backed up in iTunes. Erased all data and refreshed to factory. When prompted I restored from backup and hey presto it is working perfectly.

I hope this owrks for you, you hav enothing to lose. Took me less than an hour.

Same thing with my son's 12.9 I Pad Pro. It first went sporadically, then nothing at all. He never mentioned anything about it to me until I casually asked him when we went to the Apple Store in the local mall to get my wife's I-Phone 6 Plus battery replaced before the end of the $29 replacement promotion. The Apple associate took one look at it, checked out the serial number and told us to come back in one week as the new keyboard was on backorder. I even asked him to mark it down for a store closer to us. no problem!

iPodge - you are an Apple Keyboard hero. I’ve been fiddling around with this thing trying to get something to work for a while now. After reading your post I took a magnet I would consider to be fairly strong and ran it along the “gutter” accross the top of the keyboard. It would “stick” in certain spots, one being atop the number 1 and number 2 keys. Anyway, I left my magnet stuck to the gutter in each place it would “stick” for about 10 seconds each. NOW, my keyboard works every single time I place the iPad in the gutter to stand it up. Who knew? It was my flux(capacitor)! This is the only method I’ve tried over the past 2 months that seems to have actually fixed this issue. Every time I would get it to work the next time I wanted to use the keyboard I would go through the same connect/disconnect/push/pinch/wiggle/slap/etc. the keyboard together. It finally just stopped working. No matter what I did I could not get the keyboard to work. It has worked flawlessly the past several times I have disconnected and reconnected it. Thanks for teaching us about magnetic flux.

Same here, I am having the same issue. :(

EDIT;

I have managed to fix it by cleaning the Smart Connector that is below the iPad and using the "magnets" to restore the flex of the switch of the iPad Pro so that it reconnects back properly as shown in this guide here: How to Fix iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Says "This accessory is not supported by this device" - Saint

Hope it helps!
