Mac book is very slow after updating to mac os sierra. I try to open an app and its very slow, even finder
How do I fix this?

Have you tried updating your Graphics card driver? The CUDA panel in the control panels section at the bottom (if its Nvidia GPU)
Had the same problem, mid-2012 retina macbook pro, ssd, everything maxed. Was fast even by todays standards, could run FCPX editing 4K video no problem. After Sierra update couldn't even play 4K video off of the SSD harddrive.
Realised it could no longer play 3d games and overheated instantly with Kernal_task going up to 1000%cpu (what does that even mean?). Figured graphics card was the problem. Then saw that my GPU driver was wildly out of date. Always figured it updated automatically but obviously not. Maybe previous MacOS updates worked with the out of date driver I was running but Sierra didn't. Just a conjecture.
Anyway tried all the standard fixes and nothing worked, only after updating that Cuda control panel did it suddenly work again. I suppose it could be some other problem (I am not computer literate) but that was the sequence of events.
The performance is based on the time for Etrecheck to do its run.
Rerun Etrecheck and post the entire report.

I ran Etrecheck per this thread recommendation and it found a couple of issue that I fixed. From time to time I still get the spinning beach ball so I run Etrecheck again and found a couple of Apple apps that were highlighted in red. Fixed those (sorry can't remember their names). Re-ran Etrecheck and Performance was listed as Excellent. Few days later got spinning beachballs again so ran Etrecheck again, no red highlighted issues (just the usual "killed Apple tasks - see below) and the performance was Good. Every time I run Etrecheck I get different performances even though the report is identical to the last. Sometimes it's Good, sometimes Average.

I run Sierra with 8 GB and haven't had a problem. I use Photoshop CS4, Photos, FileMaker Pro, Adobe Photoshop Elements. I only leave 2 or 3 of the apps open all the time.
Unless you're doing some heavy video editing I think 8 GB should be adequate. Just keep the number of open apps only those absolutely needed at any time.
What is the problem you're experiencing? You don't say so we can only guess it's the killed processes due to insufficient RAM. If it's something else then post back and be specific.
After removing the adware is the problem lessened in any way?
You are running only 4 GB or RAM and that may be part of the problem since you've had so many processes killed due to lack of RAM. You model MBP can utilize up to 16 GB of RAM. Apple only states 8 GB but the 8 GB modules were not available at that time. I think upgrading to at least 8 GB will go a long way to speeding up your Mac and stopping the killed processes. Added memory will not improve boot time.
You only have 2 memory slots so you'd need two 4 GB modules or, if you want to max out two 8 GB modules. Only get them from crucial.com or macsales.com. They test all modules on the same model Mac and guarantee that they will work.
Also get ride of uTorrent. Websites from which it downloads are probably where you got the adware. Only download software directly from the developer's site or the App Store.
Also make sure the Unpollute My Mac application has been removed and deleted.

More RAM might help, but I don't think that is the main problem. See my last post for recommended sources.
Uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.
Most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.
Check for associated parts and pieces using these programs. Also use them to find the remaining Carbonite files.

Okay, I do notice that it does speed up after a reboot. I don't have anything automatic loading on startup.

Here's the deal--MBP mid 2010 OSX 10.12.2 upgraded to Sierra and it got wayyy slow = everything--not just internet--like throw it out the window = useless computer. Went to all these forums and others had same issue & tried little things to no avail. THEN I went to Apple support 'chat now' and they had me zap the p-ram = didn't help. THEN they had me go to -->desktop --> Go (at top) hold option while holding Go then 'Library' appeared in middle of list. -->open library-->throw cache in trash -->restart computer --> empty trash -->restart computer and Voila = MBP back to normal speedy self !!!!!!! :-) OMG and WoWsErS!!!! Apple has free support, even in the middle (4 am) of the night = totally cool!!
