iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

There is a microphone on the back of your phone, at the top right next to the flash. It's a tiny pinhole. Make sure that isn't covered by a screen protector. It has to be completely open. I had a glass protector partially covering mine. Removing it, solved my problem.

I cannot understand the attitude of this Apple organisation when so many customers support them by continuing to buy each new iPhone that comes out, it seems they want to aggravate its customers rather than putting things right. Why not recall all these phones and supply new ones. I purchased a new IPhone 7 Plus beginning of March 2017 and have suffered microphone cut out since day 1. I have made numerous calls and went to the flagship store in London to the Genius Bar.

Genius be blowed the young man was very pleasant and did a diagnostics test and said no problem, did a reset, still the same, what happens is my voice fades and cuts out then pops back, I now have spoken to someone on apple who has confirmed at last that this is happening. I now have another appointment at Regent St in London with another Genious. I am thinking to myself is this real. If they don’t replace my phone I think Apple need to be exposed on a consumer programme on TV. I cannot get over their arrogance in this matter. I will not accept this lying down, how about all the disgruntled customers meet up for a confrontation, I am law abiding but can’t Apple see there are limits that they can push people to.There clearly are problems why not admit it.

If Apple's so called diagnostic test isn't detecting a problem, then there is still a high probability that you will still have the same problem after they swap out your phones. If they would swap these defective phones with truly "new" phones than I would try it again. But, all you are getting with a phone swap is a "refurbished" phone which means a returned phone that has passed the diagnostics tests and received a new case, but has the same internals. I have done all the phone updates, multiple resets and all the other tests imaginable that Verizon and Apple could come up with including a phone swap and I still have the same problem on two IPhone 7's. At least for me, the tape over the rear microphone does the trick. I love it when people ask why I have a piece of tape on the back of my phone and I get to explain the problem to them. I know that I have turned a lot of people away from Apple and will continue to do so unless they fix my problem. This is the true definition of "putting lipstick on a pig".

You just answered my question that they may have fixed it on iPhone 8 clearly they haven't so i won't be upgrading, may as well keep faulty phone i paid £650 6 months ago perhaps the fix when you go into the genus bar is to suggest they supply a piece of tape to cover the rear mike they would probable want to charge to do that unless some enterprising Chinese company supply : special tape to sort out iPhone mike problaems'if enough people complain they may just take some notice but have my doubts

My second brand new iPhone 7 plus is still experiencing this issue. Callers still can't hear me. I am really exasperated now. I called customer support and they suggested that it may be to do with the 'back-up'. That I transferred the issue from one phone to the other when I backed up from iTunes. They suggest going back to the Genius Bar and trying a new iPhone 7 plus, but without transferring data to see if the new phone works. They said that it would be near impossible to have 2 phones with the same hardware issue, meaning it must be a software issue. When I asked if the operator had heard of this widespread ssue, she said 'no'. I confirmed that there are lots of customers with this issue and we all need urgent help because we can't use our phones. At least Apple should communicate with its customers and acknowledge it. I will update further when I have been back to the Genius Bar.

Did you not read my post? Yes, covering the rear microphone is a "bandaid" solution. But, it is not a fix. At this point, you can keep dreaming that Apple is going to fix your phone, but they're NOT! They're just waiting until you fall out of warranty and move on. I love the fact that it takes "tape" to make our $800 iphones work properly, what a **** joke.

SAME EXACT PROBLEM but I'm on Verizon however- My phone is bad, my wife's identical phone is 100% perfect. Its a garbled windy static to them, sometimes no voice audio at all.. and to me, when they talk, it sounds so distant its like I'm trying to rescue someone out of an abandoned mine shaft.

iPhone 7 128gb 10.0.2. Apple chat tech support said to stop by an apple store and have them look at it :\

I have the exact problem with my iphone7 verizon the only way people can hear me is by almost sticking the bottom of the phone in my mouth, if its more than 2 inches away its garbled and sound drops to nothing. I have tried a replacement 7 and its still there, i had to turn my old 6 back on and with that phone people can hear me as far as i can hold the phone away with my arm

I have the iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, 256GB, jet black) and just started having a problem with the microphone after nearly two weeks of flawless use. I first noticed it yesterday during a video recording of a concert. When I played back my videos, the audio was very muffled and barely audible. Checked to make sure it wasn't the speakers, but sure enough if was muffled in the recording itself (wasn't distorted, just very very muffled). Then when I got home from the concert, I did some tests just by recording my voice and some music in my living room. Sure enough, the audio is cutting out during video recording (if you turn the volume all the way up on playback, there is still some recording going on, but it is barely audible), but then it comes back. I can repeat this with just about every video recording, and loud sounds seem to trigger it more (but it's even done it just recording my voice with nothing else).

At this point I don't know if it's a software glitch or a hardware issue with the mic. I am going to restore the phone to see if that fixes it. Seems like it fixed it for you for a few days, which seemed to indicate a software issue. But if it came back, what does that mean? Have you had any problems with the replacement or are you still waiting for it?

Also, are you running the iOS 10.1 beta, or on the regular release?

This sounds like a different issue than ours. But to answre your questions, we tried the software restore, thinking that it would fix the problem, but it didn't. We were using iOS 10.0.2. It really seems like a hardware issue, but we obviously cannot be certain of that. We cannot have a no functioning phone, that is, we can't have these microphone/communication dropouts during calls, so we are sending it back for a replacement.
