iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

Hi BlueEyedBull,

Great to hear you found a solution to your problem. Please keep us updated when you remain problem free, or when not. Good to know about various problem & solution possibilities.

Though I think it's quite possible that your solution to your experienced problem may not be totally generic as people here from different continents and countries with different providers experience the same problem. But hey who knows? :)

For example I had renewed the SIM card as well by Vodafone Netherlands and did a DFU install, totally resetting all. Still the same problem. Currently, I am holding my iPhone 7 perfectly still while making phone calls. That seems the only way to have reasonable phone calls. When I 'forget' holding it still I instantly have these microphone cuts/drops again.

I am told by Apple that they are aware of the problem and are working on it. I will be updated any day soon.

I'll update this discussion after.

Agreed. Good to have that looked at. Who knows. At the moment noone has come up with the silver bullet after all. And your info is a new angle. That's progress. :)

By the way, can you describe the problem(s) you experienced with all your 4 iPhone 7's in more detail? Please be quite specific when you like.

I like to assure that we are not mixing up provider issues with hardware issues. Thank you BlueEyedBull.

Hi mr.aam,

Voices were cutting out and at other times garbled. It was so bad it made the phone unusable.

The reason I suggested checking "policy" is because this problem is sporadic. I find it hard to believe I ended up with four phones that were duds. Setting cellular to data only helped some, but it didn't help me. They suggested if the problem reoccurs to ask Verizon tech support to reprovision the account. He said it is basically taking you offline and than bring you back on. It helped him with a problem he was having.

Hi BlueEyedBull,

Thank you for your explanation. Your problem that you experienced basically sounds the same. Good to know.

I think too it's not a hardware issue but a software issue or a setting issue. Because renewal of iPhones is not solving the problem. Would be great for all if that 'policy change' could fix it.

I will share this info of yours when I speak again to my Apple contact regarding this matter as their engineering is looking into it as well. Thanks.

Gee this issue goes on and on.

I had cause to go back to apple Genius bar again. They placed the phone on a counter and ran a microphone test which was 100%. They would not listen to my request to move the phone around as that seems to have a detrimental impact to the sound at the other end.

I found that they recommended cutting the case away from both sides of the lightening port, now done, lus did an update to 10.2

Problem still there.

This really is a big problem. As said before, great toy lousy phone!

So after freeing all microphone holes, an update on a week old phone, they now say to get another Sim.

Could I be suspicious that they are stalling us until something is done?

Apple still refuse to acknowledge anyone has a problem even though I made them read these blogs.

So what next? Not good enough Apple!

Hi Linus 2,

I got lucky when I went back to the Apple store. This guy wasn't satisfied with just giving me another phone. There are three settings which should be your carrier's name. I wish I remembered what they were, but they are right next to one another. Ask them to check and see what "policy" says. The fact this is affecting some, but not others tells me there is a setting issue. If it were the phone replacing it would have fixed the problem. I know a lot of us have wasted too much time on this issue, but give it one more try.

Thank you! I turned off the rear mic on my phone because people receiving my phone calls said that I sounded broken up, muffled, and echoed so I tried what you suggested and it solved my phone call issues but I'm still experiencing static noise when I'm recording video or audio with or without the EarPods on. This is really frustrating I spent so much money on this phone only to get a faulty product :/

I just hope that it's more of a software issue than a hardware one.
