iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

I'm having the same trouble as described here by others. Mine is a with a new jet black iPhone 7. I've tried reseting it and reinstalling iOS again but that hasn't worked. When I call someone I can hear them clearly but they complain about very poor sound at their end like i'm standing in the wind or under water. Sometimes they can't hear me at all. This is very frustrating. I've gone back to my old iPhone 5s which has worked flawlessly for 2 years.

Does anyone have any updates on this problem? What has Apple said or done so far?

I have the same issue with iPhone 7 plus. It is so frustrating!

I have been to ATT and Apple Genius Bar twice. Had my phone replaced and same problem!

Genius Bar said it was ATT only. I switched to T-Mobile and have the same problem!

It's not ATT. I have had every iPhone every other year with no issue. This is driving me crazy.

APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

So here is the update!

I spent a long time on the phone (not my iPhone) with a senior tech person at Apple yesterday. He had me totally restore my phone to factory settings. No back up. So I lost my music, text messages, all my apps etc. Like others have mentioned it did not help!

I have another appointment with the genuis bar today. The senior tech said it was definitely not a software issue and to get another phone but to check it out in the store before I leave to see if it works! I have already had to re install everything once and reestablish bluetooth to all of my devices when I switched my phone the first time. It is such a pain for a $900 new phone. People can not hear me unless I have the speaker phone on. Apple has no idea how to fix this! I will let you know if I can find a phone that works today. It seems to be mostly the iPhone 7 plus. About to pull my hair out!

So 2nd update. I went back to the genius bar at Apple and asked for a senior specialist. I had spent several hours on the phone with the senior advisor. We restored my new phone to factory settings and still had an issue. So he told me it was not a software issue and to go to apple and get a new phone and try it out in the store. After 2 hours at the store they gave me a another new phone. This time not a remanufactured one. Tried it out and seemed ok. I made a phone call after leaving the store and my husband said you are really cutting out. I was about to throw my phone out the window or beat my husband. So I called back to my senior tech and he said let's try some new things with the way you hold the phone. Right side left side etc. So he had me hold the phone really close to my ear really touching the side of my face. I have never had to do this with an iPhone before. With the 3 mics this phone is different. Guess what, it solved the problem. No problems with people hearing me. So try holding the phone right up to your ear not a couple inches away. I can't believe this fixes the problem but it's worth a try! All of that time spent and 3 phones later to find out it needs to be closer to your head!

Funny enough yesterday I talked to an apple tech and she told me to do that . To reset my phone like a new phone without back up. I didn't do it cause honestly I think they don't know how to fix the problem. And that's a pain to have to restore everything again. I switched my phone 2 times already not counting the one I originally bought. And I still have the same problem. They checked the phone before I left the store but it's not like it happens immediately . It happens if you're on the phone for a while then all of a sudden the person can't hear you. It's frustrating especially when the phone is so expensive . Let me know how it goes and what they tell you.

Went to Genius Bar and they checked everything on 11 February went through everything make sure everything was working said I wasn't talking into it right and that it was probably because it was the first time I've had a plus. Went back last week because it continue to get worse after I turned off LTE data, I did the start restart ect ect. Went back they logged everything we did a complete restore could not take from a back up only was allowed to keep my contacts and pictures I am still working almost 2 weeks later to import at first it's seem to work and others could hear me but today when my boss called me at home he kept asking me where I was couldn't understand me asked if I was in the tunnel. He said it multiple times and I told him my phone was screwing up. They told me they would replace my phone if I had an issue again I'm tired of starting over it took too long and I lost too much crap this last time. Obviously from all the other complaints it didn't fix it anyways when they got a new phone. I have never wanted to go back to an older phone so bad. I have never had so much regret purchasing an iPhone 7 Plus to 56 it was the biggest waste of $1000 plus $129 for AppleCare. I will never make that mistake again I am counting down the days till I could turn this into Verizon. After a 4, 5, 5s, 6, 6s which had a battery issue that when it got cold it would shut off and they promptly replaced it no questions. The only good thing about this phone if you could actually hear better when on speaker because it is louder. Maybe it has something to do with not having the headphone jack. I have no idea what it is but obviously you guys have screwed something up and can't cop up to it because it will cost too much to fix. Screwing over your loyal database is big mistake I guarantee. I will never waste another $1100 dollars not including all my trips to another city to the Apple Store or my time to fix a problem that you guys can't fix. Epic fail.

They didn't say what was wrong with it but only confirmed it was faulty.

When I first took the phone in to report the fault I took some print outs of this forum thread. I think it may have helped explain the issue and showed that others are having similar problems. I did this because the told me over the phone that I was the first one with a faulty iPhone 7 that the knew about.

Same thing happened on my iphone 7plus. I bought it 2weeks ago. When me and my nephew recording ourselves while playing keyboard, we noticed that when we played the recording, the sound is not good enough to hear our voices and sounds from the instrument. You may hear it barely muffled at times.

Could anyone tell us the real problem of the phone?

Please advice

My new iPhone7 mic on speakerphone has these problems for the people I'm talking to only when 2 bar reception or less: cuts out, lowers my voice, produces static. When I take it off speakerphone, the problem is resolved. Failed attempts at resolutions (I never combined these resolutions but did them one at a time and then changed them back):

1) Changed Cellular/Cellular Data Options/ Enable LTE from voice and data to data only.

2) Changed General/Accessibility/Phone Noise Cancellation from on to off.

3) Tested mic on recording voice memo while 2 bars--works fine.

4) Tested mic on recording a video while 2 bars--works fine.

5) Got brand new phone--same problem immediately.

6) General/erase all content and settings, then did restored backup.

7) General/erase all content and settings, then set up as new phone with no backup or apps added.

8) Used without case.

9) Allowed Apple techs to do all available diagnostic testing in person and over the phone. Passed them all.

10) Held my phone not covering any holes.

11) Laid my phone face down then face up.

12) Went to ATT, they sent me to Apple store, after 3 hours sent me back to ATT, they said Apple had wrong info (Apple said carrier needed updating but the version was the most recent so wild goose chase), Apple phone tech got me new phone, next Apple phone tech sent me to Apple store, Apple genius at store sent me to Apple phone tech, disconnected, new guy called, no solutions. No one admitted to ever hearing about this problem. Hours and hours spent with no results.

Most of the listed solutions were not from them but through reading Apple discussions. What I'm adding is that my problem happens only when I have 2 bars or less.

Now what? Do I get a Samsung? My $750 investment is for nothing. I must have a working speakerphone.

I know it's frustrating. When I went to the Apple Store the last time the guy seemed annoyed and I'm like I don't enjoy coming here waiting and getting and attitude because you think I'm making this up. They have this "community blog" it's pretty **** obvious we're not hallucinating . I don't think they know how to fix it . They should do a recall on it and let us get a whole entire phone. Meaning not a 7. I do know a person who has a 7 and never had any issues. But this is my 3rd phone and I'm just dealing with it because I have no other choice. I wanted to sell it but then I'm like I'm still paying for this phone. I hope the next phone they come out with doesn't have such major issues. I really don't like androids so I would like to stay with apple if possible. Good luck, you're not alone! What a struggle!!!!

Potential solution?! Let me know if this works for you too?

Also a frequent poster here.

OK so today I went to the apple store and the tech guy actually finished my sentence when describing the issue. He knew it exactly. He said he gets the question once per day. "you talk for 10 seconds then your voice cuts out". I said "so that's about a hundred people for you so far that you've seen with this issue? Seems like a legit issue" He agreed.

He said "I guarantee this setting (below) will solve it". I asked him if I could have that in writing. He declined. Alas. Nonetheless the "fix" according to him is a setting as below - switch LTE to "data only".

Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options -> Enable LTE -> Select "DATA ONLY"

He described some issue with the iphone 7 and also 6s Plus chipset and how it interacts with LTE networks in some areas. That made some sense as to why the issue is so hard to nail down. I'm in the Denver Colorado area.

Don't know if this solves it yet but did in 2 test calls.

But this IS the first time I've talked to someone from Apple who KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE.

Try it out and let me know if that works for you.
