iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

There is a microphone on the back of your phone, at the top right next to the flash. It's a tiny pinhole. Make sure that isn't covered by a screen protector. It has to be completely open. I had a glass protector partially covering mine. Removing it, solved my problem.

For me, that fix does not alleviate the problem of the same issue wherein people on the other end of the conversation, on the iphone 7 plus reporting to me, during the call, of not being able to hear me correctly. Because of this issue I have had people either, hang up on me, due to them not hearing my voice sufficiently, tell me that my voice is breaking up, tell me that I sound like I am under water etc....

To be clear, affixing an adhesive material over the tiny microphone located on the back of the camera is not even remotely an acceptable fix for this issue even if it does seem to work at time, under certain conditions. Which for me does not at all address the issue. Sorry

Unlike yourself I was not hopeful that ios 11 would fix the problem because I have already been on the GM release for a week now. The problem is the same although, there are quite a few very cool new features in ios 11. I'm really enjoying it. I just wish that the iphone 7 plus was a reliable phone too, but it is not. I'll reach out to my AC guy today...........

Ok, so today was a waste of 2 hours. Costed me quite a bit in lost time. Went to the apple store to get replacement as Nicole, the senior tech, said she put in the notes. I get there and he found no notes to replace phone and ran tests, which I was told I did not have to go through again, but I did. He found no problems and would not replace my phone because he found no problem. So I called nicole back, after I left, and she is getting me some kind of rush replacement authority and will call me back within 24 hours. The gentleman at the store lied to me when he said he called nicole to verify replacement, nicole had no record of him calling. This is the NEW post Jobs apple I guess. I'm not impressed at all. So, I don't know who's telling the truth anymore, my trust in apple has been stripped from me today. I'm not sure a new phone will even fix the problem, it hasn't for most everyone except one guy who said it the new replacement phone was working good so far........................ Don't know what to do. Can I force tmobile to give me a refund, anyone know how? Or to get them to let me try a Samsung 8? I do need a properly working phone..

Thank you for that. I'm coming from a note 4. It actually took slightly better photo's than this 7 plus. That REALLY surprised and disappointed me. But the low light capabilities of the 7 plus made it better suited for me so I decided to keep it. I do really miss the 16mega pixel camera though. I'm quite certain that the galaxy s8 camera is going to be even better than the note 4's. I never really had a problem with the note 4 I just wanted to try something else. I would now go back to the note 4 if I could, but I can't. Sold it. Matter of fact, if I would have kept it I would have already handed this 7 plus back to the counter guy after getting their names with a manager present telling them, "sorry, I can't use this phone, the 7 plus. Nobody is solving the problem so I have no choice but to give it back to you, whether you want it or agree to take it or not. I've taken my sim card out and put it back into my note 4. I wish to remain your customer, but not with this phone. Sorry, I don't know what else to do, I've been abandoned with a non working phone." lol😠

Hey guys did we establish which version of iphone 7 plus this is happening? The one I have is the jet black 128gb version. I just bought the wife the projekt red 256gb iphone 7 plus and it works and sounds flawless. Perhaps we need to return the jet black versions and grab another color? Maybe we can narrow this down? The latest ios has failed in making the phone sound like its actually above water.

Well, you are not the only one, there are thousands of us and probably a lot more. I can picture Jobs turning over in his grave. Or coming back to life and firing a bunch of people for not dealing with this problem. The attention to detail and perfection is RIP, a memory. You know what blew me away? Can you believe they came out with another phone with glass on both sides again?! OMG!

Buy a bluetooth headset like I did. Looks like apple is forcing us into newer technologies, kind of like when they dropped the 3.5mm headset jack. Probably in a year or two there will not be microphones on iphones. You will no longer need to hold the phone to your face and have a conversation. You'll have to use the supplied headphone adapter or buy the ear pods. So, let's just get up to date with the technology and these issues we have will no longer be a problem. At least there is a way out.

I totally agree with what you are saying. But, I have to continue to use my phone while I wait patiently for a fix. The tape at least allows me to carry on phone conversations. For some crazy reason I thought maybe Apple would reach back out to me to see if my problem has been resolved (what a dream). I have two of these **** phones with problems and the real bummer is that I traded in 2 iPhone 6's last November which were perfect, only to get this nightmare. Do any Apple Representatives read these threads on this forum???

This problem is a lot more widespread than I thought. I was at a public storage place yesterday and we were talking about phones. We were both surprised in that everyone he new was having the same problem. Total stranger, boom, their having the problem too. There has got to be a recall coming soon for these inoperative 7pluses. This is probably one of the biggest coverups I’ve ever seen regarding bad hardware of any kind. I guess they can’t afford to recall all these phones after building the spaceship across the street from me.
