iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

Ugh. I've tried this and it still did not fix it. Not to mention if you are on Verizon and you do this you can kiss using your Maps while talking on the phone goodbye. If you even so much as receive a phone call or text it'll kill the internet on that. You can't control that while driving and I dunno about you, but I NEED Maps to drive. I am completely directionally challenged.

I find this solution unacceptable besides the fact it doesn't work for me. Last time the Apple guy pretended the problem didn't exist and when I mentioned the forums he hassled me and I had to fight with him to get the phone replaced. It wasn't until I started getting loud in the store saying, "Ok if you aren't going to replace this phone with the Apple Care Plus that I paid for then I don't need to be upgrading my Macbook Pro this year either if this is how it's gonna be. I spend A LOT of money on Apple products, I'm a designer. But I can sell my iPhone on eBay and go buy a Samsung if that's how it's going to be." Which seriously, that should not have to happen.

I really don't get what the deal is. Apple was always so so good about releasing good products and if there was an issue fixing it in a timely manner.

I am really regretting switching from the iPhone 6 now though. I never had any issues on that phone. If it's a 6S problem too then that's really bad. That means they have no intention of fixing it and it's been going on for over a year 😟

Hi All,

I have been having the same issue as well with my Iphone 7. Whenever I make a call and have a few seconds blank during the call. Below is the analysis on my Iphone.

Issue:

The issue with the microphone on the Iphone 7 is only with Apps (Facetime, Whatsapp, Skype, etc..) not with a regular call.

Potential solution:

I turned off the "Phone Noise Cancellation" this seems to fix the problem. There is still some lag between the call however it is not like after every 2 min. Its prolonged like after 10 min.

I am also using a Bluetooth device for calls.

Lets hope this issue is resolved. If not I will also try taping the mic on the back of the phone.

Regards

Anuj

I continue to have this same problem with my iPhone 7 cutting out during phone calls. I have tried a number of the proposed fixes involving changing the phone's settings, but to no avail. As I mentioned in a previous response to this forum, I talked to an Apple Support representative in early February and he seemed surprised to hear about this issue and said that he couldn't find anything about it in his file of concerns. At least I was assigned a case ID number so that I could go on record as having this problem with my iPhone. Interestingly, I seem to have this problem more often when calling a particular land-line phone number. But whether this is simply coincidental, I don't know. In any event, I wish Apple would find a fix for this issue since it makes me much less interested in upgrading to a newer iPhone when it becomesavailable.

Same thing with my matte black 128 7+ cutting in and out, with people saying they could barely hear me or couldn't hear me at all, or simply the call failed. I tried many of the things mentioned here but what finally worked for me was to change Settings>Cellular>Cellular Roaming On> turn LTE to off. This was following a suggestion from a tech from AT&T awhile ago that said that the phone with LTE selected will always search for an LTE signal but if it isn't strong enough it can lose the connection entirely or intermittently while searching back and forth between LTE and 4G. Said you can switch to LTE when heavily accessing data to improve loading speed if necessary. I also have Settings >Phone>WiFi turned to off but I'm not sure if that's also necessary.

HI FRIENDS WITH THE CAN'T-RELIABLY-BE -HEARD PROBLEM WITH AN IPHONE 7,

I too have had this awful problem. Plus the dialing tones sometimes couldn't be "heard" by an automated phone system on the other end. Plus I sometimes couldn't be heard by the person on the other end, when I was on the hands-free, Bluetooth connection while driving (meaning it wasn't - at least not solely - a microphone problem).

However, for the last couple of months, I haven't had the problem. Hopefully, it won't re-occur.

I did three things (and I don't know which was decisive):

1. Under Accessibility, Phone Noise Cancellation OFF.

2. Under Cellular/Data Options, LTE enabled for data, but unchecked for voice. (This turns off HD voice, which only would have worked in HD zones between - for me - AT&T phones that both have it.)

3. Under phone, wi-fi calling off.

I hope this works for you too.

And Apple officialdom, why couldn't you have told us this?!

To solve the problem go to:

Settings : Cellular : Cellular Data Options : Enable LTE

select "Data Only"

After months of effort and trying a dozen different solutions I have been able to verify this does solve the problem.

This actually DOES solve the problem. It is probably a hardware problem and has to do with the way LTE networks are set up in some areas , but not all areas. Something about the iphone 7 and these networks causes problems when the phone tries to simultaneously access 'data' and 'voice' over LTE.

I think this may even affect the microphone when not being used for a phone call - video, voice recorder, etc.

I am in Denver, Colorado, USA and it's a huge problem here. I know people in Phoenix who have the issue too.

This explains A LOT - why the problem is so intermittent and why Apple cannot reproduce the issue. Most the Apple Developers reside in places where this works properly.

The drawback to this is that when talking on the phone you cannot access the internet/data over LTE. BUT finally this $1000+ phone actually lets you make a call without dropping.

After many visits to the Apple Store a finally ran into a tech who knew about the problem and "guaranteed" this would fix it. He says he gets the question twice a day at least!! Thats hundreds of people that have asked him alone.

I have the same issue. Bought the phone 2 days ago after having an unresponsive iPhone 6 Plus with 'Touch Disease' and since I was told I was out of warranty (in January), Apple didn't have to stand behind that product. Now this? Come on.

Judging from several posts originating from Europe, it seems unlikely this has anything to do with 'LTE' coverage.

Is there any model of iPhone that works?? I'm about to go to a flip phone.

This is the exact same thing my iPhone 7 plus is doing. Has done since I purchased it 4mths ago. Only sound from video's recorded from my iPhone 7 plus has the muffled sound that goes on and off. Video's recorded from previous iPhone 6, voice memo's, music, movie's etc, all sound is working perfectly fine. Have you managed to fix this problem?

Having same issue with 2 day old phone. Not happy at all! Interesting thing was I was driving while on a phone call with no issue, got home while still on the call and all of a sudden the person could not hear me, and all calls made now has this issue. Will go to Carphone Warehouse tomorrow to ask for fix.

Whatsapp and FaceTime calls works perfectly, only cellular calls issue, also issue goes away immediately while on the call if you plug in headphones. Calls are a little bit clearer on speaker but you have to shout at the phone for people to hear what you are saying - sounds like constant background wind on the other side.

I have tried everything mentioned in this post, resetting, data only 4G, noise cancellation on and off, covering the hole at the back name it - none of this works.

I am leaning towards either network problem or software issue.
