iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

There is a microphone on the back of your phone, at the top right next to the flash. It's a tiny pinhole. Make sure that isn't covered by a screen protector. It has to be completely open. I had a glass protector partially covering mine. Removing it, solved my problem.

Indeed, I can very well relate to the 'frustration' this issue is bringing. And reading that iPhone 8 is even worse ...

I normally would 'blindly' pre-order the next model (like the iPhone X that's coming) based on trust but I think it's better to sit this issue through first and be confirmed that iPhone X is not troubled by this issue. As now the name "iPhone" holds no guarantees anymore for being a well functioning phone. That's quite bad. Apple better stop for a while all the cool add investments for iPhone and just have their phones working well first, that's in the end the best advertisment and PR you can have: good trustfull products with happy end users.

I fully agree sevvie1 that we as end users should not be problem-solving for Apple's iPhones to this extent. That's ridiculous and the customer service world 'upside down'.

Unfortunately that tape-trick is not a solution for me (iPhone 7 plus) . Counting down now to order the X, though it will hold no guarantees so far. Noone can currently confirm it has not this problem. Quite an expensive ‘gamble’ then. Crazy to even need to consider it could be a bigger and more frustrating step back ... instead of mind blowing cool progress to look forward to.

Hi Amandagreeneyes, save yourself the time and frustration because it has nothing to do with previous backups and clean installs and all that.

It’s very annoying to read time and time again that this issue is not properly recognized by Apple world wide. In the beginning (like a year ago) I was hopeful and did not want to go seek publicity in mainstream media, but now it’s becoming a strategy to consider. They are calling it upon theirselves, not listening to end users feedback and go to market with an equally bad functioning iPhone 8.

The Apple shine is fading quite some. And friends with Samsung S8 Plus are starting to convince me more and more. Samsung has been the phone with better quality photos already for long time, now they seem to make better phones in general as well.

To be continued ... or not ...

So I must say ATT came through for me... Replaced my 3rd iPhone 7+ with an iPhone 8+, still had the same call quality issues. They assisted me in reactivating my old iPhone 6+ (so happy I still had it) and refunded me for the 8+. I LOVE my old iPhone 6+, as it actually works as telephone. Not so much the 3x iPhone 7+ and 1x iPhone 8+ Apples...

Thank you ATT! 🙂

Further to my visit to apple service center 4 times no solution they could find to resolve the microphone inconsistency problem. As per their test parameters everything is working properly, but when I make calls after few minutes of communication voice goes down and some time almost nil voice for the receiving end. I was really surprised to see the way Apple store at Yas Mall Abu Dhabi dealt with me, they didn't even bother to study the issue even though I have spend hours and hours visiting service center and bring this issue up four times even after receiving a replacement unit. It seems Apple has achieved enough and more customers now and customers who brings up the complaints are only a nuisance for them not an opportunity to become better.
