iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

After reading this entire posting 6 weeks ago, here's what I did on my iPhone 7 Plus ( matte black, 128 gb, with a case that doesn't cover over anything) to fix people not hearing me very well or not hearing me at all during phone calls. I made all 3 changes listed in bold below. I initially started with the first two, which one at a time didn't seem to work. Then added the third change. I haven't had one problem since. I don't know if it was changing all 3 that finally did it, but I'm not tempting fate by testing it.

Try doing all 3 of these at the same time:

-- 1. Select LTE for data only (vs. voice & data)

--2. Turned noise cancellation off

--3. Put a tiny piece of scotch tape over the microphone on back (not over the small camera lens next to it 🙂 )

Since then, I make and receive calls anywhere (I live in Minneapolis MN area, just traveled to Phoenix and Albuquerque for 10 days). I haven't had one problem after enduring this issue since I bought the phone in Sept 2016.

PS: I did stop at the Apple Store right after I fixed it and one of the reps there told me that Apple is aware of it, it's a software problem, and they will be coming out with an update/fix soon. If you believe that after all this time, I have some land in Florida (truly) that you might be interested in buying.

I have had this problem since I received my 7 Plus last November. Apple has given me two new phones to no avail and I have started from scratch both times - not restoring from backup. Still have the same problems with callers saying they can't hear me - I sound like I'm in a tunnel or under water! They all sound great to me. I have started to begin my calls by apologizing for the quality of the call. For friends and family - I use FaceTime audio when I can, which works fine.

Recently I read about trying to turn off Phone Noise Cancellation (Settings-Accessibility) - did nothing for me. I also heard to try turning off Bluetooth but that just seems like a super big hassle as I use a lot of bluetooth devices. Please, please fix this problem Apple. Even though I have been a faithful Apple iPhone user since they came out, I am about ready to put in an order for a Pixel as waiting until iPhone 8 comes out seems like forever away.

I'm having the same issues with my 128gig Jet Black. I sent it for repair with my phone company, who sent it to Apple.

Apple stated they couldn't replicate the issue, but replaced the display for some reason.

Got the phone back, still has the same issue. So I'm going to try again tomorrow and see if I can get a replacement.

I'm of the opinion that I shouldn't have to change settings on my phone, or tape up the rear microphone on my brand new, and expensive phone.

OK folks… I have the same issue before on my 7+ with the volume going down to where people couldn't hear me and then breaking up at times. I figured out that it was happening when the iPhone was using the Wi-Fi connection as it is always stronger in my house then the traditional over the hair AT&T. Today it happened… And I realize that there had been a power flash of the electricity to my house (I only know this happens with my oven clock goes to zero… Everything else is a battery back up). And for some strange reason it affects the voice over Internet protocol

It didn't print all of my message above… But basically if your phone is going out through the Wi-Fi into the Internet as it is stronger than the traditional mobile phone service… You need to unplug your router/modem… Wait two or three minutes and plug it back in so it will reboot. This will restore the voice over internet protocol for the iPhone through Wi-Fi. This is what I found with my Time Warner modem/router.

I am having the same issue. I was a Samsung user all my life until i got my Apple iphone 7 plus 128gb. Now everyone says I am muffled and cut out. It's been going on for six months. Makes it so I can only text instead of talk to people. I feel less connected with people since getting this phone. Not sure what to do. Apple doesnt seem to be owning up to the issue on this phone. Sure wish I could get some help on this issue.

As I have previously posted, this seems to be an issue with the iPhone 7/7 plus.

I had this happening to me for two weeks and I made an appointment at an Apple Store and they ran a special diagnostic just for all the speakers and microphone on my phone while I was there and the microphone came up as failed. They said it was a hardware issue and they replaced my phone on the spot.

Since then no issues.

The diagnostic apple runs over the phone if you call in can't detect these issues. It has to be done in the store.

Hope this helps.

Forget AT&T has nothing to do with them.

Apple will replace your device.

This is what's been happening to my iphone 7 too except that the audio/sound only cuts off during live shows or concerts where there is a lot of background noise. I've tried upgrading the iOS, restarting the fone & still it doesn't seem to correct the problem. Apple Support on Twitter told me that it was normal which, you & I know, isn't! I had to send in 2 videos that I took so whoever was on the other side assisting me understood what I meant. And of course they agreed that it wasn't normal (duh!). Anyway, it is quite annoying. None of my old iPhones have this problem & I just really want to know how this issue can be resolved. Hopefully, there is still hope for it.

Is this problem of microphone , fixed in iphone 7 plus in new 10.3.2 update? Can someone confirm?

I have a new iphone 7 plus bought a week back, and has 10.3.1 and experiencing same problem of mic over cellular connection wherein the front person not able to hear me out.

Mr. Raam, do you have insights on this, as you were connected to the Apple engineer?

Thanks in advance.

I bought a Lifeproof case. I thought it was the case. Modified case, still had problem. Bought new case. Still have problem. Need to go to Apple store for diagnostic but totally hate the thought of waiting forever. I am no longer able to have a concersation on my Iphone plus without someone else saying, "I can't understand what you saud", "What did you say?", "Can you repeat that?".. it is horrible.

Are you making your phone calls from home and using Wi-Fi to make him? I had this issue after a fast "flash blackout" of electricity. When my modem came back online the Internet worked fine As did the cable TV… But I wondered if it had something to do with my phone calls fading out that day and creating static as well. So I completely reset my
