iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

Are you using Sprint? I had lots of problems with Sprint's service cutting out like you mention... However this was before the iPhone even came out... Think I was using the Motorola MPX220 IIRC, but their service was just horrible!

That's all I got... Haven't had any complaints with my iPhone 7 plus on AT&T or T-Mobil and I just recently switched! They paid me $600 to do it too! And get this, they actually sent me a card with $600 on it!

Picked up a new 128gb iPhone 7 Plus earlier today. Tried it out, and the issue is gone.

Although Telstra and Apple claimed they couldn't replicate the issue when I sent it away for repair, there is a significant difference between the call quality of my old and new phones.

In stead of playing with settings, go for the replacement device where possible. The phone should work as stated when purchased, especially since it is an expensive flagship phone.

Same here. Apple store couldnt replicate problem according to my receipt BUT i heard the problem when we switched phones. Got new phone, no more problem. I dealt with this for 7 months!! Agreed to put me off on Apple because I was a solid Samsung user. Feeling completely different now that i am not muffled to everyone. They did diagnostic and only came up with software issues, hardware tested fine but i wasnt making this up!! So so so glad I got replacement device.

I was an avid Samsung user, but decided that I'd give apple a try this time. Seemed like an absolutely terrible decision, until I managed to get a replacement device without any hardware issues.

I'm sure they didn't bother testing my device properly the first time. All they had to do was make a phone call and it was immediately obvious.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 7 256gb, Vodafone DEUTSCHLAND. I tried different solutions, factory reset, installed a beta software 10.3.3, I changed the SIM card to different operators, the problem is still there. But, when I speak on FaceTime audio, WhatsApp audio, Viber, skype, all audio, is working fine, the sound is spectacularly clear, maybe the third-party app doesn't use the ambient mic ? Thank you for future support.

I tried changing settings, switching 4g to data only, tried wifi calling, turned off noise cancelling, and nothing helped.

The audio was clear when using facetime or just recording memos, but I assume they use a different microphone to phone calls.

A replacement device was the only thing that fixed mine.

However, there is the possibility that there are 2 separate issues here, one hardware, and one network.

May 28, 2017 1:31 PM in response to alexpetcu87

yeh, but you know what Apples like right, and the networks are no better, so go ahead and try and get a new phone. The problem definitely exists with the IOS 10.3.2 upgrade as my phones were fine before that, so I hope the next upgrade will sort it out. In the meantime I've requested an engineer for the network to visit my area to text the 4G signal. If I go out of my local area the hone is fine with 4G on. Have you tried other locations?

Same here. It is definitely a network issue . My iphone 7 plus i set to 4G data only( carrier does not support voice over LTE/4G) . I live in Sofia , Bulgaria and my iphone works just fine , no issue at all , but now and then i go to my hometown where my iphone starts acting up. People constantly complain that they hear garbled sound or can not hear me at all. I have no choice but to set my iphone to 3G which really fix the microphone problem but still i find it unacceptable that i can not make a regular call with 1000$+ phone.I really hope it is a software issue and fix is on the way.

I have the same issue. And I already contacted apple several time and they replaced it two times and still the proplem is there. I made many complains and apple ignore it all.

They have the worst customer service ever!

Still I have the same issue and case still opened with apple- customer service for more than five months and they couldn't solve it yet.

My advice change your phone to samsung. At least They respect their clients!!!

I've been an Apple user since 1986.... thirty years... and I find their customer service to be terrific. I was one of the guys people laughed at for using Apple back when they were 5% of the market.

I had the same problem with my iPhone 7 and I'm pretty good at tech stuff (have owned a recording studio for 25 years) and I found the problem to NOT be with the phone but with my Time Warner / Spectrum modem after brief blackouts (I live in the woods and this happens a lot).

The iPhone 7 uses WIFI for calling if it is available and it is generally a much better signal than over the air. But after a lot of experimentation I found that when the modem went down after a "power flash"... it would come back on... the internet worked fine... as did streaming movies... but something happens to the phone signal through it and you have to reset the modem. And then... for me... everything worked fine again. I've had to do this a few times... but the problem isn't Apple... It's Time Warner / Spectrum.

Same thing here. After two replacements (one by Vodafone and one by Apple) that didn't change a thing I actually purchased an iPhone 6s that presents none of the problems my iPhones 7 did.

Im

still holding on to my last iPhone 7 as a spare, hoping that a future update will correct the bug, but I'm not optimistic; it's just as likely to be a hardware issue.
