How do you input the Apple ID verification code on a macbook? (Mine is OS X Lion 10.7.5)

Hi!

I'm trying to set up my apple ID on my macbook - I open System Preferences - mail, contacts, calendars, click - iCloud - prompted to enter the password for my apple ID.

Then, I receive a pop up message that states: "An Apple ID verification code is required. Type your password followed by the verification code shown on your other devices."

The verification code DOES come thru on my iPad. BUT! I do not have anywhere to input the code on the macbook!

Please help me~ Thank you for any help you can offer.

After reading through countless questions like this ( because I had this one too ) I finally went to Apple Support Chat. This was my issue.. I couldn't find a specific answer on how to successfully enter a 6-digit code to gain access into my iCloud on my macbook pro. I was entering my password for iCloud on my Macbook Pro because that was where the issue was. After successfully entering my password on my Macbook Pro my iPhone (trusted device) prompted me with the Allow or not window, I hit allow. Then a 6-digit code popped up on my iPhone. I would try forever to figure out where on my Macbook Pro I should enter this 6-digit code.. BINGO.. you're NOT supposed to enter it ON YOUR MACBOOK PRO.. You take WHATEVER device prompts you the 6-digit code (your trusted device) and enter it on that device. I was entering my password on my Macbook Pro and I needed to be entering it in my iPhone instead! Wow, do I feel silly, but NOWHERE does it say this in all of the forums I've searched. I have a link here: Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

Best of luck everyone, Hope this helps!

Here is a snippet from the support article linked below:

From your Mac:

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
  2. Click Account Details.
  3. If your device is offline, click Get Verification Code. If your device is online, click Password & Security > Get Verification Code.

Turning off Two-Factor Authentication is not an option for everyone. Some Apple IDs opened after a certain date must use it. Anyone who wants to use a third-party app (whether on their iOS device or Mac, or on their Android or PC) that will access iCloud data must use either Two-Step Verification or Two-Factor Authentication.

Also, turning it off exposes you to unauthorized access to your account. You do not have the protection that comes with Two-Factor or Two-Step. If you look at any other high-traffic sites (Google, Amazon, government sites), they all offer Two-Step or Two-Factor, and some sites require it. You are stripping away an extra level of security by turning it off. And whatever your issue is, turning it off is not a solution.

Best of luck,

Well, you are describing a very specific circumstance that is limited to visually impaired users. And that is something that Apple will address, hopefully.

But turning it off is not a solution for the majority of users, and it is absolutely not a solution for people who are accessing their iCloud data from either third-party apps, or non-Apple devices and computers, or both.

So, to make a blanket statement that has not been qualified is simply not the best solution for most users. If you want to make a point about the issues that a particular group of users are encountering, then state that.

Best of luck,

So Pismo 900 is right. I'm on my macbook trying to use imessage (have it open every day) with the Messages app. In very random apple fashion, it logged off for apparently no reason. Now I can't figure out how to sign back in because the verification code is not being accepted in the password box. I'm already signed in successfully to icloud via the webpage after being prompted with a box to enter the 6 digit numeric passcode. There seems to be a disconnect between icloud and imessage though.

OK, let's take this step by step, because I am not asked for any verification code when I sign into Messages.

I open Messages on my Mac

Under Preferences>Accounts>I see this screen:

I sign in with my Apple ID, and this is what returns:

Do you have Messages enabled on an iPhone using the same iCloud account? Is it still functioning correctly?

I gave up trying to use Messages on my Mac because of this verification code issue! But it's no problem because I have messages activated and working fine on my iOS devices (I don't even remember if I was asked for a verification code when signing in to messages on my iOS devices with my Apple ID?).

I mention in the previous post that I turned off two factor authentication for my Apple ID but I have not tried to sign in to messages since doing that. I will try to sign in now that two factor authentication is off and see if there are any problems signing in now and will report back later today or tomorrow.

This is the reason why I turned off to factor authentication because it has given me so many headaches! There are other places where I could not do anything because of the authentication issue such as iTunes, The App Store, etc.! I also have not tried to do these tasks since turning off authentication but I will also report here my findings if I'm able to access those things previously inaccessible.

But as you can see from the screenprints I provided above, there is no requirement for a Verification Code when you sign into Messages on a Mac. If you mean you had issues getting signed in to Messages on your Mac several years ago, that is because at that time, we had to use an App-Specific password to sign into Messages and FaceTime. That is no longer required.
