iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Hello genya,

Yes, it was batteries all along. New batteries resolved the issues. iOS 10 only hid it. Myself and a few other Apple customers worked hundreds of hours to bring this in the open with proof. You likely read some articles I contributed to. Key in this process was 'proof.' Some of us had no coding science but enough electrical knowledge and studies to identify the battery as the only possible culprit. Hopefully when you left the forum a year ago you went and changed the battery, not the phone. Some geniuses knew, some did not. Either case, in the end, Sr Apple management made the decision we wished for: full admission and a solution. My preferred solution is a new tech, solid state batteries, will see about that.

Thanks for the link! Glad to see Consumer Reports is bringing this issue to light. Though my phone hardly falls under the 'small number of iPhone 6s units from Sept/Oct 2015' as Apple claims — I have an iPhone 6 from Jan 2015.

For the record, I'm on iOS 10.0.2, so I don't know that the 10.1 update is the cause. Yesterday I got the 1% battery warning, even though I had charged it a few hours before. Sure enough, the battery jumped right back up to 65% when I plugged it in. I wasn't even using my phone right before the battery drain, it was just in lock mode on the table while I was doing other things around the house.

From what I've seen in this thread, the people reporting this issue are quite a range in terms of which phone they have and which iOS they are running, so I find it ridiculous that the solution is for all of us to replace our batteries....

I have a iPhone 6 from February 2015 and never had this problem up until a few months ago. I have noted this on other threads several weeks ago and just saw this 64 page thread on the same issue! I recently updated my phone to 10.2 in hopes that a patch was deployed to correct the issue. However, I had the same occurrence yesterday but I was lower than normal, around 30% when my battery dropped all the way down to 1% in a split second. Once I plugged my phone back in within a minute it was back up to the upper 20%.

I don't think all of our batteries, given all the different models and ages of the phones, could all have a battery hardware issue at the exact same time! Something is going on with the devices that there is a disconnect between the phone and reading the actual battery voltage and it is causing the phone to erroneously calculate and display the battery percentage.

I have An iPhone 6 as well. Been having various battery draining issues since iOS 10. For a while, I had the sudden shutoff at 30%. After resetting phone with full DFU mode, I'm not having the 40% shutoff but still experiencing crazy battery drain. Will be fine from 100-90. Then starts to drop more rapidly. Weird things like I'll be at 60% and take a call. 10 minutes into the conversation, I get an alert that I'm below 10%. Or I somehow find myself at 1%, plug it in and I'm instantly back at 10%.

So weird and annoying. My phone prior to iOS 10 would easily go all day without being charged. I'd have 20% or more left.

Update: Told one of my coworkers about this issue and he suggested doing a battery life test to see if that may be the issue. I downloaded an app (free, and fittingly called Battery Life) and apparently my battery is in good condition and has only degraded about 6%. Left the factory with 1810 mAh capacity, currently has 1700 mAh. I have no idea how accurate that app really is, but it doesn't appear that the hardware itself is failing or anything like that.

The other thing my coworker suggested was to try recalibrating the battery. Here's a link to a how-to for anyone interested: http://www.appledystopia.com/how-to/calibrate-iphone-battery/. Don't know if it'll work, but worth a shot. Something to try while I have some down time over the holidays!

I posted this earlier as well - I know everyone is saying this has happened with the update to 10.0, however I have a 6+ and I'm still on 9.5.x and it's been happening to me as well. Last night I was at 45%, and my phone shut down. When I pressed the power button, it said low battery and to plug it. I plug it in, and it says 45%. I unplug it, and then it powers off again. So I just left it on the charger.

When you can't trust your phone at 45%, there is something seriously wrong. At this point I'm not convinced it's a software issue. I'm almost off contract and I'm not planning on going back to an iphone - the quality of their phones and software has been **** the last few years.

Hi Alpinedude, I think I got caught in the crossfire and my post got deleted by the censors along with yours.

Anyway, to sumarise:

My iPhone 6s got its battery replaced at Apple's cost (Lucky Lotto) and I am giving it it's first long charge so will post back with any feedback tomorrow.

One thing I did notice is that the "Boing" sound the phone makes when plugged in is instantaneous on the new battery, the old one could take quite a few seconds to do the same.

Also, I notice that a previous poster plays Pokemon Go. I used to up until the battery issue.

So far I have caught 139 of them, including a few Pikachus with Christmas hats, one of which I evolved into, you guessed it, Raichu with a Christmas hat.

I mention this because the game uses battery like there is no tomorrow and it also uses GPS significantly, something which people are conjecturing is causing the battery drain.

I will be playing it like mad on the new battery to see what happens.

Adrian.
