iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Hey Adrian,

Nice initiative but the power to be likely did not like your battery advocacy idea, and I suspect this is why they deleted your post. Am glad if the forum was able to assist with your battery replacement and it working. Some people believe that theirs are fine and their perceptions are different than yours. On your side, you were told one day that the diagnostics were fine for your phone, and two months later, fried. Textbook drain induced hardware degradation, the question remains what caused the drain, faulty battery design not answering 10 demand, or Pokemon Go 10 drain. If iOS 10 drain, the exact same thing should be happening to your current iPhone - be it not happening to mine or people in my circle. And if this degradation does not easily re-create, then your other conclusion, as mine, is that you had faulty hardware to commence. Happends to millions of smartphone owners worldwide.

But am also glad with your sponge approach to technical knowledge and that you adapted usage (PG is Gone) to preserve the phone.

HI Gabrioska,

Have you been on Twitter with Apple Support? They helped me a lot and put me in touch with an Apple Senior Advisor who called me. It helped talking to an actual person and being able to get some solutions to the problem about my battery drain. Also, give Apple Support a try. I have chatted and spoke with an Apple Advisor, but Twitter seemed to help me the most. Good Luck!

Thanks Belisarius, I am here happily mashing my battery up with Pokemon Go.

Taking it down to <10% every day and I must say until this morning it has been working well, apart from, what we already knew - that IOS 10 is more power hungry than IOS 9.

However, this morning, I experienced symptoms at about 40% battery which were very similar to ones I used to get before a sudden shutdown.

My screen started flickering and behaving oddly, even on the home screen and I was expecting it to shut down, but after a couple of minutes it sorted itself out.

My plans are to hammer this new battery and then take it to the Apple reseller here in Gibraltar for diagnostics every month.

This way Apple will have a record of my new battery and how it is performing and degrading on IOS 10.

Will keep everyone updated on here.

Adrian.

Was this a factory battery replacement? Or aftermarket? Thanks for the update. As I suspected. It's way more than just a battery problem. Sure. It might expose worn batteries. But replacing the battery is NOt going to be the fix. It's an OS problem. I think the problem is worse for some depending on the apps they use as well. Last night while using my phone. Just surfing with Safari. I noticed a quick drop in battery life. I went from 70% down to 42% in less than 30 mins. I tried doing a hard reboot. As soon as the phone came back I was at 52%. Odd I thought. So I decided to continue doing what I was doing. Surfing with Safari. My battery life never moved from 52% for more than 45 mins. Then it started normally dropping until I got to the 40s and it was time for bed. Put it on the charger over night and it appears to be running normally again. Something very screwy with this OS. Just for giggles I ordered a new battery. I'll be replacing it in a few days. Only cost me $3.00 after some Amazon credit. Regular price was $29.00 I'll let you all know what it does for me. I want to keep this phone until the 8 comes out. Be it Apple or Galaxy.

My serial number belongs to those whose battery was faulty since the beginning. As you said, it's the only thing they keep saying: it's the battery's fault! Well, again, I NEVER had any issue before upgrading to 10.2, I am no Apple genius but I can do 2+2.

I don't see how a faulty battery would last me for more than 1 year and a half with no issue whatsoever, and only after upgrading to the newest iOS shutting down randomly twice in three days. I also pointed out it seems to only happen when not on Wi-Fi, to which they replied "see, it's the battery", well it's not like I used Wi-Fi 24/7 for the past year and a half, I do happen to go out too, you know...

Thing is, they have absolutely NO IDEA what's going on.

It's easy to just blame the battery. Hey! Makes sense. They can push people for repairs which they make money. Or they can push people to upgrade to the 7 and make more money. Bottom line though is if it worked fine before the update? And didn't after the update? Logic tells you it's the update! That's like blaming a transmission for failure after upgrading an engine with more horsepower. Maybe you shouldn't have added so much horsepower? That's if they want to claim the OS is not at fault. Some of these "geniuses" are book smart but lack logical, critical thinking skills.

been this afternoon at the Genius Bar to have my 6s battery replaced (my phone's serial # was in the faulty lot)

asked the Genius and he said there are two distinct and known *hardware* issues, depending on iPhone model, both leading to the very same symptom: phone shutting down when battery is still partially charged

I insisted that this all started with iOS 10 and he replied Apple is investigating about this too but... for sure hardware is at fault

He assured me that replacing the battery on mine would definitely fix all issues

So far, 5 hours later (2 playing music, *DSD*, to an external DAC/ampli), battery is at 96%

"Some of these "geniuses" are book smart but lack logical, critical thinking skills." I agree, also remember that there are certain MRLs release lines they can use, and other statements they can never use when talking with customers (e.g. acknowledging some widespread issue). So as much as I really like your auto comparison, remember that iPhone 4 and 5 batteries operated with way smaller demand/mAh capacity. Very different since 6, bigger screens, etc. But living with the same update, and having no drain- nor anyone I know, have to wonder why. Gf's old 5 has nearly 800 cycles and holding steady at 85%. But I have experienced same issues on other iOS versions, randomly. Technically, yes, you can write any software to carefully regulate background app usage and limit mAh drain.

Anyways, am glad you draw a causal relationship between drain and hardware effect. Unfortunate but yer, demand can brick anything- car, motherboard, battery.

"My screen started flickering and behaving oddly, even on the home screen and I was expecting it to shut down, but after a couple of minutes it sorted itself out." Flickering is a new thing to the forum, and definitely not a good sign for any phone. Any chance you could take it in sooner? You have 90 days warranty on the new battery, curious what is going on inside. I understand shutdown, but flickering is something else. GPU? Swollen battery (if it swells connectors inside get spaced-out ? Screen? Plse keep us posted and am sure the Apple support will pay attention to your case.

"he said there are two distinct and known *hardware* issues, depending on iPhone model, both leading to the very same symptom: phone shutting down when battery is still partially charged" I really hope that, if the first issue is faulty battery recall, the second one is not on the logic side of the device, as that would be very difficult to resolve and painful for owners outside warranty. The good news is, which each such issue, Apple came through and offered extra warranty (NVIDIA fiasco was 200 million settlement and 4 years extended warranty); affected iPhone 5 users got 3 years. Apple has a great track record for outside-warranty recall/resolution.

Jan 7, 2017 2:28 PM in response to Gabrioska

Just to throw in an update about my very own issue: as said before, I noticed the unexpected shut down only happens when I'm not home, (i.e. no Wi-Fi). Indeed, I have been in all day, with Wi-Fi, and I am currently at 28% and I have been using it as usual: use/standby, apps, etc. whereas it had shut down at 44% and 50% while I wasn't home.

Again, okay, I should be replacing the battery, it's the best shot I can get to fix the problem, but I would honestly like to know what did this upgrade trigger, there is no way my battery acts faulty only outside, if it's faulty, the unexpected shut down should always happen, shouldn't it?

I got my 6S battery replaced for free as it was one of the early batches. So far ive seen no improvement in battery drain, so im still get a faster than normal drain.

Im at 25%, dowin from 100% at 11pm last night, with only 20mins usage before i went to bed.

Not happy that this is happening, and less so that i have to mess about and spend time trying to figure out what's causing this. The phone is 13 months old and has been rock solid until a week or so ago.

flipflip, if you contact Apple Support (phone, facebook or twitter) to walk you through a factory reset. The interesting question is if yours drains over 24-36 hours, without any other apps- and I mean clean basic install before re-installing the image. You could have apps shut off by swiping them up, but one or many may still be open invisibly in the background. That's is the reason they do the OS only test. If you can let us know how that unfolds, it would be great.
