iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

If you have GPS enabled, or even if you keep Wifi enabled while you are away from home (as myself and most people do)- there is a surge in power demand (esp the wifi antenna). Have you tried, as an experiment, go outside with wifi bluetooth gps turned off? Personally, my GPS is always off as it a significant power drain hog. And without an analysis of you iPhone, I mean oscilloscope, ampermetre and a few other tools in a lab, cannot speculate as to what exactly causes it other than a process of elimination. With special tools one can measure exactly the amperage drain, if the voltage is steady, if the phone self shorts. As users, through support, the best initial method is factory reset/reinstall, and so on after that.

As for what did the update trigger, several ways of looking at this. Even if I had a very good idea, would not want the post assuredly deleted. Also, engineers are working on it already, including 3d parties no doubt. Maybe the issue is already known but whatever happens next is Apple's call.

"the unexpected shut down should always happen, shouldn't it" There is no clear common shutdown denominator here. But let's assume that it is hardware, the answer is simpler. Automatic shutdown are generally demand and drain relative. A worn out Li Ion will shut down frequently under demand (amperage spikes) but not under steady states or very low discharge. Add to it built-in sensor related circuit breaker safety shutdowns, there are many ways it can happen. Would not worry too much about the gritty scenarios, other than the most tangible, best solution for you.

"Im at 25%, down from 100% at 11pm last night, with only 20mins usage before i went to bed." If actually so and not just iOS poor number reporting, you lost 480 mAh, at a rate of -1,430 mAh per hour, 1200% faster than my 6S wifi with 10.2. Not just out of specs, but out of any battery-safe operating specs, no matter the cause. Should have also heated up. If you still have a replacement warranty, Apple support will have additional steps for you.

Thanks for the reply.

I Know how to do a restore but its a real pain to put everything back on, so its going to be my last resort. I appreciate your help but im not prepared to run a bare instal for a couple of days Just yet. After having my phone for over a year i know its basic behaviour, and most nights i lose only about 5-6% at the most normally.

Ive only had one day where ther phone shut down, and only a couple with really fast battery drain. Most days since the issue stated its been faster than it shouled but still lasted most of the day.

Saying all that, i will do a reset and restore to see if that helps once i get the time. A pain but i do want to get to the bottom of this.

@Belisarius. Ive noticed my posting time on my post isn't my local time, so to clarify the time frame, it was about 12 hours duration that the battery depleted down to 25%. Still fast but maybe not as fast as you thought.

The reset is kind of a cornerstone troubleshooting step, especially with Apple. It is also the #1 was the vast majority of issues get fixed in general - including hidden app related drain in general.

There was a time when clean app install was difficult and had to be done one by one. But since iOS 8 it is quite 25 min painless. More details can be found here:

https://www.payetteforward.com/why-does-my-iphone-battery-die-so-fast-heres-the- real-fix/4/

To be safe, ensure both iCloud and an iTune backup. From iCloud all your apps will be downloaded as a clean install (as iCloud does not store the apps but your iPhone layout) and you regain the same ergonomics as you had previously set. Takes up to 30 min and it is done by the time you check back on it.

Thanks for the reply. I have done this a few times in the past but there always seems to be apps, and configurations missing. I also have a few apps that have files in them, and ive never found Apple Pay to go back on without me having to call my bank to get my already registered card activated again.

Not the end of the world i admit, but its not quite as smooth as Apple would have you believe, at least not in my experience.

I do back up to iTunes using encryption to get the most data saved, but yes, i keep iCloud backups going on a monthly basis as well.

Here's a recent list ("Updated December 20, 2016") of 30 things you can do to reduce the battery drain:

https://www.lifewire.com/tips-to-extend-iphone-battery-life-1999884

Lowering screen brightness and turning off Cellular Data made a noticeable difference on my iPhone.

How old is the battery? Apple Care Protection coverage? Your iPhone5 will be supported a little while longer so maybe it's not a horrible idea to get a replacement battery?

I tend to keep my iPhone plugged in all the time and try and let it drain til it powers off once a month or so... Never a bad time to force restart (hold the Home button and Power button until it shuts off). If you power it to 100% and power it off, let it set for 24 hours if you are still at 100% when you power back on, likely the battery is still in decent condition. I use iBackUpBot.app - it shows how many cycles the battery has been used: http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm (Plug in the iPhone, select the device, choose "More Information" from the main picture) Common wisdom says around after 300-500 cycles, capacity is reduced to ~80%.

Apple Pay is indeed reset each time some reset happens. The secure chip prevents a reread. In my case the bank has its own wallet App and I manually reactivate the cards for Apple Pay. When they did not have it out, it was indeed a nuisance to actually call them each time. One thing I never fully understood is the new iTunes Factory reset+ image. All pics/files get reinstated, then the Apps download via wifi automatically (even with the cable unplugged) over 20-40 min. I am sure it is as well a clean 1x1 app installation, with iTunes only 'mapping' the App for download on the iPhone. Anyways, keep us posted. regards

Well I have just had my battery replaced. Cost me £70. The 'Genius' help at my local Apple store said it was just normal battery life. That's a 13 month old battery which failed the same day as I installed 10.1. Apple paid NOTHING toward this repair after ruining my battery with the 10.1 update. Disgraceful.

In my household I have 3 iPads, 4 iPhones, Apple TV, a MacBook pro and a 24 inch iMac. I will no longer be purchasing Apple products.

To Apple I say. 'Adios'.

To Android, Samsung and every other non Apple ecosystem out the I say. 'Hello. Looking forward to giving to a try'

To the 'full time' Apple apologist on here I say. 'Get a life.'

Apple Yoda, it is frustrating, but I would like to know how the new battery is doing. I understand how you are feeling. Have you contacted Apple Support on Twitter? They really helped me...I was able to speak to an Apple Support Supervisor and he helped me without replacing my battery. There is some drainage mind you, but not like it was a few weeks ago. I charged my phone this morning at 100% and it has been 5 hours now and I am at 94% and used my phone searching teacher sites, FB, Twitter, and listening to music. Don't let a few users get to you. Choose to ignore them...there are more users who are supportive and their suggestions have been a blessing. Good Luck and hang there.

I thought I had just posted an update but, alas, I'm not sure it posted.

I just used coconutBattery to measure the capacity and cycles for my iPhone 6 Plus and my older iPhone 5 that I use as an iPod Touch. Not surprisingly, the iPhone 5's capacity is below 80% and it has many cycles. My problems with the sudden drop in my battery level to 1% began with my iPhone 5 but it's when that occurred on my iPhone 6 Plus that I became alarmed.

According to the app, the capacity of my iPhone 6 Plus is a healthy 94%. There have been about 319 cycles. Those statistics look good. But, nonetheless, I have experienced at least one clear and dramatic drop in that iPhone's battery level, at least as shown by the indicator, from 51% to 1%, only to restore to 49% as soon as I plugged the iPhone into my iMac.

I do not claim to understand the cause(s) of this problem. But it obviously concerns me. My iPhone 6 Plus is still under warranty for another 3 weeks. Particularly if the problem manifests itself again, but even if it doesn't, I will visit the Apple Store and hope for a solution. I hope I don't meet resistance because the capacity appears good in that the sudden drop in battery level and sudden restoration were real.

Care to go over a few things that you feel helped?

What you are getting now is pretty much what ive always had from mine until a week or so ago.

I dont believe its anything to do with the way the phone is used, at least not in my case, as i would have seen the issue a lot earlier. Silly things like turn use airplane mode over night are not the answer, and also as i always have the screen brightness just below 50% and have always had good battery life turning it down any lower than usual is also not going to fix anything.

Jan 8, 2017 12:53 PM in response to fliplip

My battery was draining like crazy. I had to carry my charger around all the time. I have the same problem you are having on my 6 plus. 10.1.1 was the cause of my drainage and 10.2 didn't help one bit. Some users are trying new batteries and that seemed to help, but I don't want to buy a new battery. I removed some game apps that I wasn't using, cleared my text messages, removed A few other items I wasn't using and that helped somewhat. Like I said, it wasn't a cure all, but it helped me until I can decide what I want to do for the meantime. It was just just nice talking to a person and given some ideas to help my situation and not being told I need to buy a new battery. I just want to make it clear that this is not a solution for everybody. Poor supervisor, he was very patient and really worked with me. Good Luck!

Was at a pool for a mile swim when suggesting Sylvia's step cam to mind but just seen that she provided it already. If you go to twitter and explain to a Sr advisor that you are disappointed, let down by the battery failure (and/or iOS 10) and you would ask for a 70 pound credit. They have lots of powers. And if at some point the issue becomes a recall, you should hopefully be fully eligible for a refund. Ref geniuses, I avoid one particular store because of poor analytical skillets/customer service, but three other Apple stores I know are superlative- they would have given you a new battery free of charge.

Jan 8, 2017 2:25 PM in response to bluejay04

"My iPhone 6 Plus is still under warranty for another 3 weeks. Particularly if the problem manifests itself again, but even if it doesn't, I will visit the Apple Store and hope for a solution." Three-pronged approach to extend your warranty. 1. Sylvia's Twitter/facebook with a supervisor; keep it simple and open an Incident. Ask for an email with Incident #. 2. If you do not have twitter, as myself, call/Apple Support. 3. Apple Store for the visit.

Speaking from experience, I had a 6 months out of warranty macbook which was replaced because I opened the case 7 months previously, one month before warranty expiration. They do the same with iPhones. If you do not have Apple Care, you can still buy it before the end of the year. If this was Apple Care, maybe you used a CC offering a 3d year. Either case, speaking with a supervisor is the best way to get a warranty bridge. That incident # is key.

The issue you may encounter is being told that the battery passes and that you have no replacement warranty even though, potentially, it may be flawed. There is an issue with 'health' resistance tests having nothing to do with a battery's actual performance ability. Either case, you have three weeks to see if heavy usage (drain) could bring it down to that magic 79% free replacement..

"Apple clarified that the bug was not a safety issue and that it only affects devices within a limited serial number range, manufactured between September and October 2015."

"We found that a small number of iPhone 6S devices made in September and October 2015 contained a battery component that was exposed to controlled ambient air longer than it should have been before being assembled into battery packs. As a result, these batteries degrade faster than a normal battery and cause unexpected shutdowns to occur."

Just a strange coincidence that your Oct 2015 unit was assembled those very months.
