iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

No, the 79% is my iPhone6+ battery health.

My 5 year old iphone4 have 87% battery health.

I use the iPhone4 for 3 year, and it is now hooked in my car as a iPod player, so it have a lot of charging cycle and battery still hold the charge for couple of week in airplane mode.

My iPhone 4 have more than 2 days autonomy with the sim in and using as a phone with wifi and bluethoot on.

The only problem is that it is very slow because of the iOS "update".

I didn't made this mistake and never do ANY iOS "update" with my iPad 3 and it is running very fast and battery made couple of week autonomy.

Was the same on my iPhone6+, it was 100% perfect before "Genius" bar "tech" install the last iOS (10.0.2) without asking me.

I didn't do the iOS "update" because I didn't want my iPhone 6 to receive an "program obsolescence" as my iPhone4 get and impossible now to use without wanting to throw it in the wall after 2 minutes of web browsing...

Funny that my iPad3 that have 5 year old still running very fast without any battery or speed issue.

Maybe because I didn't do ANY iOS "update"

I have a similar issue with my iPhone 6s (iOS 10.2), which I bought around end of November 2015. As soon as the battery reaches around ~30% the phone shuts down abruptly.

The problem is even more pronounced with charge ~20%, the phone would not restart at all- showing there is no charge.

Once I tried plugging it into charge with my laptop (on battery mode), even then it will not restart or charge. When it did restart, it again shut down immediately after reboot. The strangest problem I have seen.

I contacted Apple Support, they told me to restore the phone using iTunes so there is a fresh install of iOS 10.2 which will solve the issue. Newsflash for Apple, IT DOES NOT WORK!!!

Now I know Apple has introduced a limited battery replacement program for iPhone 6s bought in a certain time period, but it does not cover mine. I find this very strange, because the issue is much more widespread then these idiots think. This from a company which brags so much for seamless hardware and software integration in their products.

Then I took an appointment at Genius Bar, the guy said company just extended eligible "iPhone 6s bought period" for the battery replacement program, by a week. So now they seem to be covering phones bought till mid of November 2015. Such callous attitude by the company, and history of not accepting their mistakes.

This is a bug related to iOS 10.1 and it has worsened with 10.2. The first step towards correcting a mistake is its acceptance, and Apple hasn't even done that.

After 3 iPhones, its finally time for a switch to Android!!!

Alain, c'est des choses qui arrivent sur les appareils plus vieux. Still got two friends with iPhone 4, they avoided any upgrades a few iOS versions now. Your case, it is done and unsure if you can reverse it. Various forum topics on new OS slowing devices go back a few years. Reasons can be as following:

- Users not doing a blank clean install with iCloud Restore

- Users not doing backups, so the phone available memory shrinks (different layers then add up)

- Buggy installation

- Insufficient free space. below 10% megs the CPU is unable to process (how many you got left...) as it now has to share paging with RAM as opposed to flash.

- iOS features- various forums will tell you how to customize a 10 for a 4 and reduce power demand.

You are the best situated to know answers to all of these, but the general advice there is to do a clean factory reset install and try the blank OS for two-three days. Even then you might have to disable advanced iOS 10 features known to slow down an iPhone 4. Also, if you are in Canada, I hope you do not expose it too often to the cold up to -40F/-40C by leaving it in the car.

Apple has lost it! Just because they want to keep up with the trend of releasing a new iOS every year, they release a buggy iOS 10, and the bugs continue even with 10.2.

The upgrade notifications are even more irritating, because until you upgrade they will keep asking regularly and there is no way to turn these notifications off.

My phone was working smoothly, and battery in excellent condition. But since the upgrade to iOS 10, battery drains at least twice as fast and of course the 30% battery bug!

hey Sam, I know it will not make you feel any better, but I do not know a single person with such an issue, and am running it on my 6S as well.Gf's 900+ cycled now 5- no issue, even with a 69% health. she had a coworker whom developed this issue on a 14 month phone, and I suggested a Genius Bar/Authorized repair center, issue resolved. Another girl yesterday came here with a similar story, 14 month old, sudden issues, resolved immediately with a battery replacement.

To you the problem is strange, to other more experienced users, it is as easily as recognizing a bad timing belt inside a running car engine. If resets, restore, etc do not resolve your issue, the technical step is to regard it as a circuit issue. Your house, if lights go out, mysteriously, over and over again, it will take some time, but you will find that cable or fuse. The iPhone is as sophisticated, with multiple safeties built in to protect the iPhone and you should there be a power problem. Seasoned technicians would regard it as such anyway, but resolution steps should still be followed.

In advance, I agree with you that your 6S should not do that at the 13 months mark with perhaps <300-500 cycles. And do not want to comment on Apple's policy- those posts get often deleted. What I can suggest is to call, create an emailed Incident #,or keep the Incident number from your last call. Then pursue resolution steps, perhaps an authorized repair center. If replacing the battery works like it did for all but one person (he had a 6), keep the receipt, maybe it comes in handy down the road should there be additional coverage provided.

So here is for you three screenshots taken on my 6S while running iOS 9.3.5. You will see that number there. According to one app I am 0.45 off health, but am picking another popular one telling me I am down to 94%. After I took the first screenshot, it jumped to 95%. Either case, according to projections, if 124 cycles is 94%, 500 is 74% or bad. However, this could happen 13-15 months after purchase, or Oct 2017. I got Apple Care until Aug 2018.

These are the worse iPhone battery life figures i had, my 5 having 90% after 24years and 700 cycles. But the point is, iOS 10 is not the issue as it is running 9, right??

Jan 27, 2017 8:56 AM in response to _Belisarius___

I understand that things can go wrong at any time. But if I installed a heavy electrical equipment in my house and suddenly MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) goes off, I will know there is something to do with the new installation.

Similarly, my phone was working absolutely fine until I upgraded to iOS 10 (fast battery drainage), and since iOS 10.2 the abrupt shutdown issue. And hopefully with iOS 10.3 no issues at all.

But until then Apple wants me to pay for the battery replacement, so in the mean time they can find a fix for a stupid bug (publicly they are yet to accept it as a bug) which they should have discovered during alpha or beta testing.

Phone: iphone 6 plus

I've been experiencing this issue since updating to IOS10.X from 9.3.5. 10.1 was horrible and some cases it shut down after 50% battery. When I updated to IOS 10.2 things improve somewhat.... It seems to turn off after 30% consistently. Tried factory resetting the iphone, taking it to Genius at apple bar to ask to see if I could go back to IOS 9.3.5 - diagnostics on battery were good and all I got was advice on how to stop apps in the background. They could sell me new battery but no guarantee it will fix problem. 10.2.1 was released but I'm not installing it.

This is very annoying. I need to carry around a portable charger to juice up the iphone just in case...

Like you already suspect, background Apps are unlikely to be the issue. What is new about your post is that many users before came to report that if their batteries were fine, they would be denied any replacement even if paying, and had to find an authorized center. two users had Fine with recalls, overall close to two dozen resolved the issue with replacement. Either case you would have a warranty of 90 days with Apple, plus whatever a credit card may offer. My gut feel is 99% chance your issue is gone with a battery replacement. One user had a 6 and a replacement battery fail, but he had warranty and went back again. More recently, in Europe, some users were offered a phone upgrade as there was no 6 battery available. Maybe you are lucky to have access to newly minted batches.

I get more or like the same problem but with a twist. The adventure of today is not my first experience of iP6 (ios 10:2).

At about 15:30 my battery went from 57 % to 10 % instantly. Then it stayed at 10 % till 19:30 even though I used the phone regularly. I am so sick and tired to not trusting my phone anymore. Having to drag a charger and battery pack is NOT doing good for my brand loyalty. Especially when the brand owner is extremely profitable...

I was following this thread but have been away for a while and have missed a lot. My experience has been that the shutdowns are more about ambient temperature than anything else. I was in a warm climate for 9 days and didn't have a single shutdown. Coming back to winter I've seen it be fine if indoors all day but step outside and it has shutdown numerous times, the worst example now being at 50% charge. This was after only 5 minutes in my coat pocket in 5 deg C. As soon as I removed it from my pocket and attempted to use it, it shut down This is cold but not below the operating temperatures specified by Apple, right? Does it really only work at outside temperatures above 10 deg C??? My iPhone 4 never had this Issue through winter in similar temperatures.

Jan 28, 2017 4:08 PM in response to cichlisuite

Hopefully you are not reading too much into it, have a friend in Brasil, another in UK, it is many places so temperature is not an issue in your case. Perhaps you can start by checking news and updates for the past week. People's issues appear to be resolving though Apple support or service centers in many locations where it is very warm as well. Tomorrow we are changing the GF's iPhone 5 battery, she is getting sluggish performance but no shutdowns nor drain.

Jan 28, 2017 7:16 PM in response to Rusmark

This has happened to me as well. Drastic draining right before my eyes and then the battery lasted a long time at ~5%. Much longer than it would normally last at 5%. This tells me that the percentage reading is not accurate. I still haven't heard a logical explanation for this problem. A "worn out battery" just doesn't cut it. I think I'm also noticing the same behaviors in the new battery after two weeks. Although not as drastic. My feeling is it may start to get worse over time as the OS is screwing with the battery and possibly damaging it. We shall see.
