iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Malanthius, time in life is precious, the train is moving on. People are resolving the issue through Sr Apple Support or Genius Bar, or whatever authorized center. If your iPhone shut down back then, it maybe to protect the phone or you from possible circuit issues. You will find online as well some Apple explanations. With your 3d party battery, it may work now, but I expect serious issues to recommence, if not even bricking your phone. Read, and lets engage after that. You are also welcome to provide Apple feedback on several ideas, as I did.

Alain, you have so many devices, it is impossible for me to guess which one. If it is about the 4, for example, just old iMessages can add up to 4Gb of attached images. Perhaps you should service it through Support or Authorized Center? I just spent 1.5 hour cleaning and backing up the Gf's iPhone 5, full of clutter. Had to do that as we are replacing her battery in 3 hours, it has over 800 cycles and 3 years, 69% doubtful health. Caline mais c'est ca. Once they replace the battery they will do a proper reset and a clean install. Your 4 is eight times less powerful than her 5..

@Alain, totally agree with you. I have contacted Apple support couple of times over the phone, and also one on one at the Genius Bar.

Guy at Genius Bar agreed (at personal level) this is an iOS issue, because he has seen many customers coming with the same issue post the iOS 10 upgrade. But, officially wasn't able to help!

I wonder if there are some paid bots here, who keep denying the simple logic of this issue being an outcome of iOS upgrade, and keep bringing the battery health argument.

My iPhone 5 and 4S both work wonderfully well because they have not been upgraded to iOS10, needless to say they are older than my iPhone6S.

Yep, check the answer I just gave. Gf's 5 lasted 1200 cycles. Nor is anyone here with an SE or iPads. And she had no iSO 10 issue. My 6S has an issue- abnormal short life, it will fall sub 400 cycles this September- but I gave you iOS 9 screenshots. It may develop shutdowns, but when it does, that is my cue to activate my Apple Care. before you listen to the Malanthius guy, keep in mind the following. He ordered a 20$ battery kit, inserted it in that 800$ iPhone, resolved his issue. If or when it fries, he will come here blaming Apple as well. He ignored every success story.

As for my working for Apple, I WISH- but only if hired to use 8Bn of their 270 cash reserves, and build a co-joint mega SmartPower, iPower factory with Tesla. Made in the USA, my goal would be 100 cycles, 30 day / charge batteries, and tap a one trillion $ future mobile/electric auto sector demand- long lasting batteries. A Smart Power revolution, on par with the mobile revolution launched by the first iPhone.

There is a way to see how mutch cycle I have on my 6+?

For sure I will not waste money again on another Apple programed obsolescence phone!

24 month ago I pay 1000$cad for my unlocked iPhone6+ that is now no more usable without a power bank in the pocked!

1000$ and I can't choose by myself witch iOS version I want!

This is ridiculous!

For sure I will not give them my money for a battery replacement!

And for sure not for an onether Apple product!

I have 2 iPhone, 3 ipod and an iPad. I was about to change my laptop for a Mac Pro laptop!

No way! They will not have my money no more.

Same thing for my music on iTunes!

My phone was at 50% when i was diagnostic a problem on a car with my BlueDriver module and during installing the last firmware in the module, the phone shut down! (See 20% warning on the screen and shut down in a snap!)

They are lucky it did'nt brick my module,

When updating firmware is is specifie to even not anwser call text or switch app because it can damage the module during tranfer of the firmware and installation.

Yes, open App Store, type "Battery" and try a few free apps such as Battery Percentage. It should give you the cycle. Am curious how many. At 1000$ more people keep their phones longer, if they do so, like you did, far more likely to reach a maintenance point. My 2008 MBP still runs extremely well (albeit upgraded with an SSD) and given to mother; had a MBA which survived desert environment for 6 months. Last Nov, on the road, I watched for days on my iP 6S the US election- morning and all evening- more demand than any previous phone. My MBP 2015 is solid, and just very well built. Some people get 15 hours of work on the new 2016 MBP but that is another topic. Worked with toshibas, dells and many other brands, very flimsy. Their batteries rarely reach half of Apple's 1000 cycle rating.

Up to you, if you reside in Canada, Quebec, their technicians are very well trained and any those Service Centers will likely resolve the issue- especially if your battery reads 500+ cycles.

There is no way to revert back that far unfortunately. We are stuck for the time being with a defective OS. Research and you will find thousands of complaints about the battery problems that started the instant people upgraded to 10.1 upgrade. We all went from perfectly working phones to junk overnight. Some will continue to close thier eyes to the problem and ignore it for some reason.

You need to post a disclaimer for a few things. For example, you have no evidence of 'pad' bots' or shilling compromising this forum as previously claimed. You also should disclose that you resorted to a 3d party inexpensive battery, and no one advised you to do so- not Apple. As you bypassed Apple service troubleshooting, that limits significantly your credibility in speaking on behalf of those benefiting from it. These are plain facts.

Folks this will be my last post and then I am unsubscribing. I'd hoped to stay connected in case there was some official response from Apple, but at this point my inbox is filling up with folks reporting the same issue. Then there's a buch of official responses from the Battery Ambassador of this thread.

I went through troubleshooting with Apple Support. They claimed my battery was fine. I tried restoring, viewed battery hogging apps (there were none) and tried other suggested steps here. Because the battery was "good" I could not get an Apple replacement even if I paid. I replaced with a non OEM battery and my phone has been ok. I still think it drains faster with ios 10 than 9. It isn't shutting off and the battery meter is now reliable. On vacation last week I was able to get through long days with no need for a power pack, though I had one with me.

Like many of you I maintain the issue directly coincided with ios 10. I never had issues and literally the next day after the update I was uninstalling apps thinking I caused the problem. Regardless of whether it is os related or not, clearly replacing the battery fixes it.

My biggest beef with Apple at this point is their failure to diagnose the battery as bad. They can't have it both ways. If the battery is good and it is not the ios, then what is it?

My secondary issue is that this battery did not last as long as it should have. I've never had an Apple phone where the battery went bad in less than 2 years. I do not tax this phone with apps like Netflix of PokemonGo. It isn't subject to crazy temperature changes. The battery wasn't abused in any way.

For folks having the issue without warranty or AppleCare like me...change the battery. The aggravation you are experiencing isn't worth it. No one wants to carry around a power pack for their phone or worry about being stranded without the ability to call for help. It is $90 with Apple if they'll do it or cheaper if you go elsewhere (like I did). It stinks and we're not getting that amazing Apple service they've touted, but that's how it is. I'll send secondary feedback to Apple now that I can confirm that issue is resolved for me.

Complaining here is doing nothing except giving Belisarius something to respond to and filling up people's inboxes.

I'm signing off, good luck.

Thank you for the update- and the twenty first or so resolution story- be it an unfortunate situation that you had resolve the issue outside Support Channels. You now agree with me, it starting with the iOS, but, turned out not the iOS. You also agree with my post yesterday, with pics, concern about short battery life. Mine, rated GOOD yet headed for a 12 month fail ~ 450 cycles?, as certain as the sinking of the Titanic. If not for the 99$ Apple Care I got, I might be in your situation this September. Am I happy? Nooo. Quite disappointed... There is nothing official nor is there any Battery Embassy, nothing to cheer in such failure. I also do not think you should have paid, or been turned away, but I have no power in the matter. But, like you, more users out there need help resolving it.

Jan 29, 2017 11:31 PM in response to _Belisarius___

Hi Belisarius, I like this particular post.

I now have it clear. The batteries fitted in iPhones are poor quality and iOS 10 pushed a lot of them over the edge.

Just as food for thought, I bumped into one of the Apple Tecs in Gibraltar while playing Pokemon and we talked about all this.

He told me that my replacement battery was covered for 90 days only and asked me how my testing was going as the whole store know about my plan pretty much.

Not sure if I will break the new battery in 90 days, we shall have to see, it is looking good as the drain is noticeably faster after 30 days only.

So, in other words, back to warranty - Apple have no faith whatsoever that their brand new, factory fitted Apple replacement battery will last over 90 days.

Case closed.

Adrian.
