iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Hello genya,

Yes, it was batteries all along. New batteries resolved the issues. iOS 10 only hid it. Myself and a few other Apple customers worked hundreds of hours to bring this in the open with proof. You likely read some articles I contributed to. Key in this process was 'proof.' Some of us had no coding science but enough electrical knowledge and studies to identify the battery as the only possible culprit. Hopefully when you left the forum a year ago you went and changed the battery, not the phone. Some geniuses knew, some did not. Either case, in the end, Sr Apple management made the decision we wished for: full admission and a solution. My preferred solution is a new tech, solid state batteries, will see about that.

For us the problem shows up in our house at 65 degrees. Phone lasts for 10-12 minutes starting at about 100% having been on the charger the entire time. It can shutoff spontaneously at any point. It is in the teens outside, but we have not really tested it outside since the phone shuts off so quickly. We did take it on a walk before a couple of times before we realized what the problem was. It shut off in 10-12 minutes outside as well. Basically the phone has become nearly unusable unless it remains plugged in.

Ridiculously annoying since the phone worked fine until we updated it.

I finally decided to try the Beta release to see if that helped.

10.2 beta 7 does nothing to fix the problem.

It actually seemed to make it worse.

FYI - I called into support about this today. They basically said this issue is NOTa known problem on iphone 6 (only 6s), but they are getting lots of calls. Hardware on my phone is no longer under warranty, but they suggested replacing battery depending on what diagnostic said. I argued that the battery was fine until the upgrade and it seems unlikely it would go bad at that exact time. Tech agreed. Diagnostic said my battery and hardware is FINE. Next step is wipe out and restore. I'm not holding out much hope that will fix as many of you have already tried that. It is also a big chunk of time to spend for something that likely won't offer results.

This is a bummer, but if the answer ultimately is replacing the phone, I am sad to say I may be dropping Apple after being loyal since the 3g. A phone is useless to me if it randomly turns into a brick when it supposedly has a charge.

I am having a similar problem on my iPhone 6 Plus. Today the phone shut off (not sleep), and after I plugged it in, the battery meter showed 30%. I have had lots of battery related issues since updating to IOS 10, and did not have these pro1-2 minutes. However, after reaching 1%, the phone would still operate for several minutes. Lately however, the phone seems to shut off with insufficient battery at various levels, without going down to 1%. It has shut off at 24% last week, 13% yesterday, and today 30%. I tend to charge my phone every night, so I don't run into this problem every day.

I do not use this iPhone outdoors much, so temperature is usually around 70-80 degrees.

Iphone 6 user... waited a week to get a "genius" appointment and had to go all the way to Bondi for it from Campbelltown. Got there and didnt even ask me if i had wiped it and restored from back up. Just went ahead and wiped it told me to go home and restore it from the last backup. so was without my phone for nearly 5 hours all up (phone turned on but no contacts/ info on it as it was like brand new settings) got home and it took 3 hours to restore my backup. Charged my phone up before i went to bed and when i woke up i had 45 % left? and then on the train to work it shut down after listening to music for about 10 mins. Wont turn on unless plugged in to charge. Luckily ive taken to carrying around a portable battery with me so i turn it back on... trying to make about appointment with a 'genius' and cant even find the option anymore on the apple website. This isnt good enough my phone is warm all the time now too and it neber used to do that. i was told by the genius that it may have something to do with Snapchat but seriously its your product apple... fix it dont blame others.

And what do i do now? pay for a new battery when it will probably happen again? i own the phone outright and its not under warranty. Its in perfect condition other than this so i dont want to have to fork out $1000+ for a new handset.

I had the exact same problem start immediately after updating a couple of weeks ago. I've tried using low-battery mode (sucky option #1), decreasing the brightness (sucky option #2), closing apps (sucky option #3) and a reset (sucky option #4). Nothing helps. This is the second time I've had a serious issue with an iPhone 6 update. I didn't want to do it, but I go tired of my phone asking me EVERY NIGHT to update. When is Apple going to admit there's a problem and fix it? Forty-five pages of feedback should be enough to prove we're not making this up.

Follow up - Called Apple support. iPhone 6+, 10.2 (which the support person questioned as "why is that even out there") - Diagnostics on Battery (all good) and Mobile/apps (all good) - no record of any of the shutdowns. Requested that I reset - explained that I had already reset (to new, not to a backup) which led to a "Sounds like a hardware issue" comment. It's logged with apple, but no action available at this time.

Shutdown occurs at random battery level, randomly. Plugging in or waiting 5-10 minutes and restarting brings it back online at "expected" power level.

Oddly - last shutdown was at 44% - when it restarted - it stated at 44% for 5 hours. ???
