iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Hello genya,

Yes, it was batteries all along. New batteries resolved the issues. iOS 10 only hid it. Myself and a few other Apple customers worked hundreds of hours to bring this in the open with proof. You likely read some articles I contributed to. Key in this process was 'proof.' Some of us had no coding science but enough electrical knowledge and studies to identify the battery as the only possible culprit. Hopefully when you left the forum a year ago you went and changed the battery, not the phone. Some geniuses knew, some did not. Either case, in the end, Sr Apple management made the decision we wished for: full admission and a solution. My preferred solution is a new tech, solid state batteries, will see about that.

I also have this issue on my 5s since update. Battery will be around 30% and then drops to almost 0 and shuts off. Moments after plugging it in battery goes back to about 30%.

I don't understand how apple cannot consider this a problem. I don't have a strong affiliation with apple (but have liked my iPhones up to now) - maybe it time to try an alternative. Apple you need to be careful because when you bury your head in the sand it leaves other parts exposed.

I also noted that Apple says the operating temps are 0-35ºC. It has been far worse for me in the cold but also happened once in a warm room. After having been relatively ok when in warm environments (battery draining faster but not shutting off when still has a charge) I was outside in the cold and it shut off repeatedly at 48% on the weekend. Only plugging it in would revive it and battery was still 48%. It was something like 7ºC though and it should work fine in that temperature. The next day when in the warmth it happily worked down to 11% at which point I plugged it in.

It is odd that it's more common and more pronounced in cold (but not so cold it shouldn't work) but that it also happens, albeit much less frequently, in warm environments. For some it seems to happen commonly in any environment. I suspect that inconsistent behaviour is making it tricky for Apple to deduce what is causing the shutdowns.

I should add that I was away in a cold place before I updated to 10.1.1 (I was on iOS 9 and specifically avoided updating before travelling) and I did not experience any of the shutdown issues we have been having. It was below 10ºC most of the time there. So I believe it is related to the a bug in the current iOS but possibly also linked to the temperature setting.

I might consider to open up a Facebook page to show Apple that this is a MAJOR problem and widely spread.

It turned out yesterday that three more members of my family have this problem as well (models 4, 5s and 6). They didn't consider it as an Apple bug, since I told them that they are by far not alone with this problem. I really can't stand it anymore that Apple only treat this as a "small" problem for 6s models, which is definitely wrong!

Do it!

Adrian said he was going to start a page last week but don't know if he did!

I don't know what to do with my iPhone 6, its just sitting on my desk doing nothing. I would sell it but how can I when it has this issue! Luckily i've got an old iPhone 5 which still has the iOS9 so I'm able to use that for now in the hope Apple with do something to fix the 6!

It make me so cross to see these posts every day. China's government watchdog complained but I'm not sure what the outcome is? can we do that in the UK? Anyone know who can we complain to?

Following up on my issues, I opened a support ticket with Apple. They advised to wipe out everything and do a full restore using iTunes as a new phone. I did that and run with it for about 3 days, but I had the same issues as before.

I then restored back to its original condition, and they initiated a remote diagnostic. They came back telling me that my battery has drained and it needs replacement. I have an iPhone 6, so it's been almost 2 years since I have had it. I don't use my phone that much, charging it once every 2 days, and I have never had to change batteries on my phone. I mean, I still have my iPhone 4, and the battery still lasts 2 days on that. All these battery problems started when I switched to iOS10, so it cannot be a coincidence. I am thinking that if the battery has been drained, it probably has to do with the operating system.

Obviously I am not happy with having to pay for a new battery already, but I am also worried that even replacing it might not fix the issue. I see a lot of people here saying that they replaced their and still had the same issue. What do you think?

My point exactly.

Myself and my family look after our phones and to have the battery suddenly drain is bad enough.

With us too as soon as we put IOS10 on them the drain began.

It has rendered some older handsets, like yours and my wife and daughters, unusable.

Under normal circumstances, with IOS 9, we may have had another year out if it.

Apple are trying to wriggle out of this one by keeping quiet and hoping the problem goes away.

Really they should replace every single battery which has been affected.

I am disgusted.

Adrian.
