iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Hello genya,

Yes, it was batteries all along. New batteries resolved the issues. iOS 10 only hid it. Myself and a few other Apple customers worked hundreds of hours to bring this in the open with proof. You likely read some articles I contributed to. Key in this process was 'proof.' Some of us had no coding science but enough electrical knowledge and studies to identify the battery as the only possible culprit. Hopefully when you left the forum a year ago you went and changed the battery, not the phone. Some geniuses knew, some did not. Either case, in the end, Sr Apple management made the decision we wished for: full admission and a solution. My preferred solution is a new tech, solid state batteries, will see about that.

I've started to see these logs since I updated to iOS 10 because I've never had any problems with battery before, so I started to investigate further. I don't really know if these LogBatteryLow already existed in earlier versions.

Apple posted an update about this problem in their Chinese site: 有关 iPhone 及意外关机的信息 - Apple 支持

They wrote this in their last update (06/12/2016):

As a result of our investigation on this, we found that a small number of iPhone 6s devices made in September and October 2015 contained a battery component that was exposed to controlled ambient air longer than it should have been before being assembled into battery packs. Two weeks ago, we launched a worldwide program to replace affected batteries, free of charge. We again apologize for any customer inconvenience. It's important to note, this is not a safety issue.

A small number of customers outside of the affected range have also reported an unexpected shutdown. Some of these shutdowns can occur under normal conditions in order for the iPhone to protect its electronics. In an effort to gather more information, we are including additional diagnostic capability in an iOS software update which will be available next week. This will allow us to gather information over the coming weeks which may potentially help us improve the algorithms used to manage battery performance and shutdown. If such improvements can be made, they will be delivered in future software updates.

I understand that they added some other battery checks in 10.2 to debug this problem and probably they'll fix it in a next version, (or I hope it!).

I am so livid with Apple. For the amount of money we pay for these phones you would think they would come up with a solution by now. I have been experiencing this same issue and it's very frustrating. My phone is shutting off at 30% sometimes even at 40% and when I plug it in it comes right back on. I recently upgraded to the 7plus but I am really debating returning it because if it's the same issues I might as well keep the 6 and save my money. WE WANT ANSWERS APPLE. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING?? NOONE SHOULD HAVE TO WALK AROUND WITH A CHARGER ALL DAY BECAUSE OF YOUR FAULTS.

Another unhappy soul here...
I got my iphone 6 last august and it worked great until the 10.1.1 upgrade.
Before the battery used to last at least two days, now after a full charge in the morning, I have to recharge it every single evening
The 10.2 update did even worse, if possible.
I tried all possible tricks and stuff but nothing changed.
No need to say that I'm quite ****** and frustrated...

Same here, iOS 10.2 actually made the problem worse.

The battery percentage seems to get stuck at some level for a while, even with battery draining apps such as pokemon go running, then it drops different percentages at different moments, it's really random.

For example, today I went out with nearly 90% battery, I open pokemon go and I know that drains the battery, so kind of quickly it went down to 80%, normal.

I was using a transit tracking app (of course uses GPS like pokemon go) and by the time I got on the bus, the battery dropped suddenly 10%. I used my phone very little then and then the battery dropped another 20% (it wasn't going down quickly, just dropped 20% at once), so I was at about 45%, I went home and it went down to 36%, plugged the phone and oh miracle... 76%.

It's not the battery, it would be if the phone went rapidly from let's say 20% to zero and it would always be the same, this is random, happens at any time with any percentage.

Apple support checked my battery and it's fine, they recommended me to set the phone as a new phone and to not restore from backup. I did set it as new but restored the backup, the idea that the data is causing problems is ridiculous and even if you restore from backup, all the apps are reinstalled from the iTunes library. I also know that many people tried that solution and it didn't work, so I am not ready to go through the pain of doing that for nothing.

I am 100% sure it's an iOS issue and I think it's related to GPS, either directly or because GPS consumes a lot of battery and somehow messes up the battery reading.

In any case, Apple needs to sort this out, this is getting silly now.

I have updated to the latest beta of 10.2. (14C92) and have not had any issues with the battery drain that has been driving me crazy for weeks. So far so good 2 full days with several times dropping below 20% with no shut off several times deliberately forcing the phone to drop to 30% and below.

Maybe we have something that is working. We shall see.

The phone, iPhone6, has been shutting down quite regularly when it gets to 30% and requires power to bring it back to life and then would operate fine down to 5% where it should shutdown. After the last two beta updates the number of times it was shutting down dropped and now it has been about 48 hours with no shutdowns.

Hopeful.

I have the same problem on my 6s plus. I purchased it just when it had came out. Everyday it shutsdown around 30-40% mark. Today I spent 3 hours at the Denver cherry creek apple store , they checked the battery and it passed their tests. They did not let me replace the battery with the usual 79$ fee. They even suggested I don't use facebook so much and use it on a computer browser instead. It seems like they are not aware that this issue is wide spread .

Its not just 6s phones , its also 6s + like mine. Pretty bad customer service today , considering they were not able to do anything to address my issue after 3 hours with them, they even suggested that it was my usage behavior. if anyone has any fixes let me know as well...

My daughter and I both have the iPhone 6. We discovered after updating that we needed to charge all the time. My phone will die any where from 50-30% There is no warning. And it's always bad timing. As soon as I plug it up it comes right back on and reflects the same percentage it had prior to dying.

I have turned off my locations for everything. I close out of every app so it's not running. I have tried everything. They are only acknowledging a problem with one model..smh. I have a call scheduled for tomorrow am. I hope I make progress!

This is the issue, if Apple admit to IOS 10 prematurely depleting batteries, you can imagine how many people will turn up asking for a replacement.

Now, sure there will be those people who needed to replace the battery on their handset and will try to jump on the bandwagon for a free battery.

But - from this thread, there are legitimate cases where this is happening.

Apple should replace these, or at least admit it and offer some kind of discount on the battery replacement to keep these customers happy.

Nothing but silence.

Adrian.
