Be careful with such sweeping statements. Here is an example which does not seem to corroborate your conclusion.
08:fa is 2.4G/20Mhz and 08:fb is 5G/80Mhz .
Windows 10 on a 2012 MBP connects (notice the driver version) to the 80Mhz channels.
