MacBook Pro late 2016 battery discharging when shut down

Hello,

I have a new MacBook Pro (late 2016) without the Touch Bar and I'm experiencing the following problem: When the laptop is shut down (no sleep mode, no power nap), the battery is discharging with 1% every 3-4 hours in average. Usually this should not happen as there should be no consumers when completely shut down.

I have also a MacBook Air (2015) and a late 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina (first gen) and the batteries are not discharging when the computers are shut down.

Any similar experiences, any advices ?

Thank you.

Hi,

After several calls with Apple Care, the engineering answer was always the same: the 5% / 24h discharge when the computer is completely off is the expected behaviour !

But good news...

After updating to High Sierra this monday, my MacBook Pro didn't discharge when off since 3 days ! 0% / 24 h !

Contrary to what Apple says, there was indeed a bug with Sierra.

I'm going to do some test in sleep mode now.

Hi guys,

In my case installing High Sierra also seems to solve the battery drain issue in full shutdown. Before shutting down my computer I recorded the battery level as 6699mAh. After 20 hours in shutdown the very first reading on the battery after power up was 6698mAh. After a few minutes of operation it went down to something like 6600mAh.

I agree with Pulpe78 that most likely that is due to the increased power consumption during startup. I notice between 1200mA and 1800mA of consumption during startup which translates to 20mAh/min - 30mAh/min, so it is conceivable that in a few minutes you can deplete 100mAh.

Since we're having different results with the same software and hardware, I suspect that you're one of the lucky ones for whom the relevant firmware update worked.

It has been in the news lately (for security reasons) that Apple MacBook EFI updates fail totally silently, and that over a third of the devices tested by a security company have old firmware despite having totally up to date OS versions.

I have different results. I upgraded to High Sierra, and the issue is somewhat addressed, but certainly not fixed to the point of 0% / 24h. My losses were anywhere from 3-5% per day shut down in Sierra.

with High Sierra:

65% on shutdown (8:09 pm)

64% on boot next day (1:58 pm) ... 62% by 2:01 pm (3 minutes later!)

... so, that's a 3% loss, just slightly disguised.

next day:

61% on boot (6:31 pm) ... 59% (6:32 pm, 1 minute later)

... another 3% loss (62% shutdown, 59% 1 minute after boot)

I haven't yet done a 2 or 3 day test, but as far as I'm concerned, it's still failing the overnight test. The only difference is that High Sierra seems to overestimate on boot, then settle to the real number within two minutes.

Mine is a late 2016 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Arrived from manufacturer with 0% charge. 8 battery cycles total, so far. All tests normal. SMC reset. High Sierra installed.

Vestpocket and Pulpe78,

Can you guys share what is your EFI version? I believe it can be found under About This Mac/Hardware/Boot ROM Version. I just updated to High Sierra so I am still in the process of verifying whether the update will fix the battery issue for me, but my Boot ROM Version is MBP133.0233.B00. I have a 2016 MBP with touch bar.

I will test my battery overnight and report my findings tomorrow.

Hello everyone,

I just want to report that I am facing the exact same issue. My 2016 touch-bar MBP15 discharges by about 2%-5% per 24 hour period when it is in shutdown. Looking at the logs I can't see any activity between shutdowns, so it seems unlikely that the computer is waking up for some reason and hence consuming power. I have tried resetting the SMC as well as turning off the boot-up on opening the lid feature and neither has solved my issue. An interesting thing that happens when you disable the boot-up on lid open is that as soon as you open the lid you get a battery icon on the screen with the percentage that you have remaining. It looks like this is a feature meant to give you a quick battery reading reminiscent of the LED indicators on the side of older MBPs. The reading appears for a few seconds and then the computer goes back to "shutdown".

As mentioned by others in this forum I haven't seen similar issues with older MBPs. My work computer is a Mid 2015 MBP15 and I don't lose any battery in shutdown. In fact while I was on vacation for 14 days the computer was still at 100% when I came back. My older, personal mac is a 2015 MBP13 and for the same 14 days period it had lost only 3%, while the 2016 touch bar MBP15 had lost nearly 50%.

The only other device where I have seen a similar problem is a 12'' Macbook first generation. BTW, all of these devices are updated to the latest version of macOS Sierra (10.12.6).

It is not a firmware problem. This is a hardware issue that is happening to people with and without the touchbar. Something is not right here. I have had multiple MacBooks. I have an older 2008 MBP 15 inch that does not discharge anywhere near six percent in a 24 hour period and it has nearly a 400 on the battery count cycle! My 2016 MBP with touchbar goes through at least that when shut down, if not more, and it is only at seven on the battery cycle. I keep it now constantly connected to a charger. That is sad....

I got my MacBook Pro back from Apple repair and they ended up replacing my top case with battery. The issue unfortunately still remains. I am still losing 2-3% a day even with a new battery.

Not sure at this point what to do. I don't think there's anything they can do if I take it back. Also do not want to be without computer again for a week.

One thing to note. I don't remember this being an issue the entire time I've had computer. This has become a problem since the last two sierra updates I feel. Hopefully someone here finds a solution and can post about it.

Hi,

My High Sierra update is not a clean one, just installed on top of Sierra.

I confirm that my battery is not draining (or negligible) in shutdown mode: for example, 80% when turning off and 80% when booting 24 hour later. It is true that I lose 1% in the first two minutes of use but I think it is the cost of booting.

I ran some tests in sleep mode by disabling TCPKeepAlive: 3% per 24h battery discharge.
