MacBook Pro 2016 15" butterfly keyboard problem

Hi

On my new MacBook Pro 2016 15", all keys (butterfly) works perfectly - except the enter key. Even though it does work, It doesn't "click" and you can't feel your are pressing it down - it feels like pressing the metal next to it.

It worked fine the first week.

Anybody experiencing this problem?

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

Same here. Brand new 15" MacBook Pro, and the "n" key stopped working after only three days! Got it working again by turning the computer over and tapping the underside of the case per a YouTube video. Maybe voodoo but it worked. Then the problem came back the next day, so I did it again.

Just ordered an electronics air duster from Amazon on the advice of my son who has lived with the same problems on his MBP for the past year. Son says that everyone in his company has MBPs and everyone has problems with their keyboards, even after getting them replaced by Apple. They keep them going with air dusters and spudgers. Just want you want in a portable computer you take on business trips and use on planes, right?

Apple continues to both delight and disappoint.

I had a better experience in Edinburgh. On my second visit, I invited the technician to type 'the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' several times and see how many mistakes he made. He didn't even bother, and agreed to get the keyboard replaced (in the store, though they have to order parts). He said it would take less than a week, and would be free unless they found I had done something (I haven't). I await their call!

I had my Macbook Pro 2016 keyboard replaced, and it now works OK. However, I still don't like it, and it is too noisy to use in a quiet work environment such as a library. I have therefore bought a second-hand 2014 Macbook Air and a 2011 iMac, both from eBay. Together they cost less than I will get by selling my Macbook Pro 2016 on eBay. The iMac has a 1Tb fusion drive with all my files on it, and it does the backups. I sync the Macbook Air using iCloud. The 2014 Air is a much nicer machine to use and I feel more comfortable carrying a relatively cheap laptop around with me, in case it is stolen or damaged. Though it has only a 128Gb SSD, I can still access all my information from iCloud, thanks to the new storage optimisation features in High Sierra.

I hope Apple is noting the number of complaints about this keyboard design. I think they should make clear in their specifications that it is significantly different from previous models!

The Edinburgh Genius bar failed to fix my keyboard on my second visit, despite saying they would and keeping my computer for a week; but when I threatened to return it for a full refund, they finally agreed to replace the keyboard, necessitating a third visit 48 hours later. Apparently, they have to replace the entire 'top' of the computer plus battery. I read somewhere that Apple redesigned the keyboard in 2017, but the store was unable to confirm this. Anyway, the replacement did fix the problem of stuck keys and double keystrokes and I can now type normally. You just have to be persistent!

I also do not believe the stories that the problem is caused by 'dust'. My first keyboard was a problem as soon as it came out of the box, brand new, and I have done nothing to make it dirty. On the other hand I have had several MacBooks Air before, typically for 4-5 years each with nothing but superficial cleaning, and never experienced such keyboard problems.

I have similar problems with the 12" MacBook Pro (2016 model bought 2017). Mostly, I have problems with the 'n' and 'b' keys, which either skip or, if you press a bit harder, give double letters. I also get problems with the cursor jumping randomly to another part of the text while I am typing, for no apparent reason.

In addition, the new keyboard is very noisy. If, like me, you often work in a library or quiet study space, the clatter of the new keyboard is embarrassing, and trying to type quietly only make more letters skip.

Apple made a major mistake with this new keyboard! Contrary to the publicity, it is just cheap and nasty. When we spend £3,000 on a new laptop we deserve much better! I have had several Apples before, but never with such an unreliable keyboard.

I took it to the Apple Store genius bar and they showed me keyboard settings. Worth looking at, but does not solve the problem. They say they can do nothing and recommended that I buy a refurbished laptop with the old keyboard (but will not refund the one I have).

I hope there will be enough complaints that Apple will finally redesign the keyboard more like the old one and offer free retrofits to all of us who find ourselves downgraded.

They tried that one on me, the tech said that the butterfly clip broke when he was trying to repair the key. The repair center tried to blame me, and told me that I'd be responsible for the $450 charge. I put up a fuss (it's under AppleCare), sat on hold for the better part of the day, then the day after, and I think that they got tired of hearing from me, and the store agreed to pay for the repair.

Same issue here with the cursor down key on a Late 2016 13“ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. From the day I got the machine, I noticed that this key was a tiny bit lower than all the other keys. But it worked fine initially, so I didn’t bother.

Over time, I had to press harder for the key to register and the key also developed a strange „wobbly“ feeling compared to the others. I guess something underneath the key cap probably broke.

So last week I took my MBP in to an Apple Store and it‘s been in repair since. Glad I have AppleCare. Today they called to notify me that the repair was „a little more complex“ - which can mean anything - and would take longer than expected...

I‘m hoping they have a spare part that addresses these issues for the 2016 models. Otherwise I’ll probably press for a replacement machine when it happens again (or takes too long to repair).

I purchased a 2016 MacBook Pro, 13" last spring. The space bar started sticking, so I took it along when I drove the 4 hours to the nearest Apple store, thinking it'd be prudent to have a "genius" look at the problem. The tech broke the clip, and the machine had to be sent in to the repair center for replacement of the top. The repair center tried to bill me $450 to repair (it's under AppleCare), blaming me for the problem. The store (Mayfair, Milwaukee) agreed to cover the cost, but eventually ended up sending me a new machine. Two weeks later, and the "t" is sticking on the new machine. Do I trust the techs? Not at that store, but to ship it in to have it repaired, only to be without my machine for another 2+ weeks isn't attractive, nor is the idea that the problem will come back with another key. Apple has a problem with the new design, and it needs to be addressed.

I just got my keyboard replaced (top chassis including battery) because of stuck keys.

Now, 3 days later, I have already had 4 keys stuck! One was stuck for an hour maybe and then magically came loose again.

I don't know what to do.. if I return it again and they do it all over, it will probably not fix it.

Maybe I need to do it again and again and return the computer and buy an old one?

How is it possible that they don't have a new hardware design so that if you get it replaced, it's really fixed?!

I popped the bad keys off and placed a key protector ($7 on amazon) on keyboard & can clumsily type but didn't bother w AppleCare or warranty because it will continue to happen. I ordered keyboard from China but also buying inexpensive laptop that's not apple since I can still use apple features on my macbook pro --- I just can't type easily.

Too bad Apple is careless w out time & money.
