Solution to new repeated com.apple.Safari.History Crash On iTunes 12.5 Launch After Reboot 10.11.6?

My Macbook Pro retina mid-2015 1TB SSD 16GB RAM has been running OK with regularly used apps, but immediately since update to OS X 10.11.6 (latest version) EVERY time iTunes 12.5.4.42 (latest version) is launched, even after a full reboot with no other apps launched, a crash report appears stating that com.apple.Safari.History has crashed.

Curious if others had this happen too. I do send reports to Apple every time, but just checking if someone has figured out what is causing it .Thanks.

Imran

I just took the plunge and clicked update with Safari 10.0.3 & iTunes along with it.

Be aware this update was so slow it made me remember floppy disk based software installs.

It appeared hung on "restarting" nearly 30 min! Eventually the MBP retina i7 booted up and seeks to have fixed the problem.

It is pretty deceptive when companies do not acknowledge bugs in the first place and then don't mention fixing it in later updates. But that's now been typical here for a while.

So far the problem appears resolved.

Good luck. Do back up before you install. Just in case.

Jan 2, 2017 5:08 PM in response to IMRAN

This solution works when it involves Spotlight: Solution: Spotlight results in Error --> com.apple.Safari.History quit unexpectedly.

I've not seen it triggered by iTunes; but try unticking 'Music' under Spotlight:

Go To: System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Search Results -> [uncheck: 'Music']

You may as well uptick Safari Bookmarks too, just to test:

Go To: System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Search Results -> [uncheck: 'Bing Web Searches' & 'Bookmarks & History']

Jan 18, 2017 10:47 AM in response to teuku kemal

I have had this problem too ever since the last Safari security update. It manifests itself as an immediate crash when I type something into the Spotlight search box, whether invoked with CMD-Space (my normal way of doing it) or from the menubar. The only good news is that if I do like teak kemal does, and move the Problem Report box to another screen and leave it there without OK-ing it, the problem stops and I can invoke Spotlight as much as I want to launch apps without it crashing. Weird but true, and it certainly makes my use of my Mac much nicer again.

BTW, I have just run the latest security update, hoping it would fix this problem as well as everything else it fixes, but no joy there...

Jan 18, 2017 11:01 AM in response to ncollingridge

Thanks for mentioning your lack of success with the supplemental update, ncollingridge.

Checking in to add my report that:

1) A month later, the crash continues to happen for me.

2) The Security Update 2016-003 Supplemental Update for El Capitan does NOTHING to resolve this issue. Or, as best this non-programmer can tell, change it in any way.

Spotlight remains dead to me, and Apple is getting close. It’s been over a month since the earlier Security Update and/or the Safari 10.0.2 update (i did not update iTunes) caused this problem. Holidays are over, Apple: Fix. It. Please.

My workaround is disabling the keyboard shortcut (so i don’t accidentally invoke Spotlight, which i do more than actually wanting to invoke it) and not using Spotlight, or planning for a crash report interruption when i must. In other words: OS 10.3 Panther all over again! Wheee!

Jan 18, 2017 11:28 AM in response to Sonic Purity

I posted the following in another thread (is there anyway to consolidate multiple threads on the same topic?).

Alternatives to disabling the keyboard shortcut, would be to move the crash report dialog pop-up box to another screen as others have suggested, or disabling the Crash Reporter Dialog (see below)...

To recap, the error/crash occurs when using Spotlight - for me by calling Spotlight with -Space, and invoking a search. The error does not appear on initially invoking Spotlight, only after hitting Return. "Disabling" Spotlight has no impact (i.e. unpicking some or all Spotlight options via System Preferences -> Spotlight and adding all hard drives to Privacy list - this effectively wipes all Spotlight indexing stored in /.Spotlight-V100. Yet- calling Spotlight results in an error and crash dialog. An adverse side effect of disabling Spotlight is that other search functions like searching within Apple Mail or Contacts, use Spotlight and are useless if the Spotlight indexing is disabled.

One option to avoid the annoyance that seems to work is to turn off the Crash Reporter Dialog via a Terminal command window and entering:

defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType none

To reverse, enter:

defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType

See http://osxdaily.com/2010/02/15/disable-the-crash-reporter-dialog-in-mac-os-x/ for reference.

NOTE - this does not fix anything, it just keeps the error dialog from popping up.

Another helpful hint: I use Spotlight via -Space mostly to start or recall applications. Creating a keyboard shortcut to launch Launchpad is a workaround (See System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Launchpad & Dock to set). I set my Launchpad shortcut to -L, which does not appear to conflict with other shortcuts I have set.

Jan 18, 2017 9:33 PM in response to IMRAN

This is now beyond disgusting and total disregard of user experience considerations.

I went so far as to delete every single plist in Library in Safari folders and relaunched Safari, hoping that the recreated new History.db type things would clear out the problem. No joy.

I tried to download a fresh copy of Safari but Apple's monolithic approach is not to have Safari available for download. You have to literally reinstall the whole OS at great time, effort and even risk, just to get a fresh copy of Safari, assuming that would even solve the problem.

I cannot even delete this piece of junk from my hard disk as trashing it fails, with error saying Mac OS needs it.

I even got fed up enough and tried to delete the binaries listed in the crash reports... but even with sudo I could not remove them. At one time it was ev!l Microsoft that did the things that are now second nature at Apple.

Anyone else have additional ideas on deleting possible culprit files?

Imran

Jan 19, 2017 1:22 AM in response to IMRAN

The lack of freedom to delete the binaries is IMV a positive as you can really screw things up by deleting certain OS files, which would lead you to having to do exactly what you don't want to do - reinstall the OS.

The best approach is to wait until Apple sort it out, which I am sure they will do shortly now based on other reports that they are working on it, and in the meantime adopt the coping method of not sending an error report, which seems to prevent the problem from occurring after that.

I agree entirely that this is not a good thing to be happening, and it frustrates me that it has not already been fixed, but I do think we all need to step back from getting too worked up about it - Macs are incredibly stable by any measure and this is not a crashing problem, more a very minor inconvenience which has a mitigation strategy to enable you to keep on working without the problem occurring. There are way more troubling things going on in the world to worry about!

Jan 24, 2017 11:35 AM in response to IMRAN

I did the same thing you did: Safari 10.0.3 and iTunes 12.5.5 at the same time (after a SuperDuper! backup, which i stupidly neglected to do in December).

Same result for me: the crash appears resolved. If i find otherwise, i’ll post here again later. If there’s nothing more from me, it’s fixed (on my Mid-2012 Non-Retina MBP at least).

Thanks to those at Apple who worked on this and finally fixed it.

I agree with you, IMRAN, on your points about Apple not acknowledging bugs nor their fixes, and some of your earlier ones in older posts. This was not handled at all well IMO and it seems that the Safari 10.0.2 release was insufficiently tested on El Capitan systems. Had a whole other new spontaneous Spotlight crash on Sunday which also interrupted my work and had me nearly spitting nails (and it must have been a background task, as i’d not invoked Spotlight nor done any flavor of search). So far it’s a one-off, but combined with this incident does nothing for my confidence in the stability of contemporary Apple software. Thanks for the follow-ups through this process.

Jan 24, 2017 11:41 AM in response to ncollingridge

If something is so inherent to the OS it should be IN the OS code, not an APP in the Applications folder.

Safari is a Browser APP, one of many available on the Mac. I should be able to delete a browser APO that I do not use especially if it is of atrocious or buggy quality shoving crashes like the one above into people's daily lives even if they do NOT use Safari.

I do not know how you do not think something that generated 20-30 crashes (and yes, they are crashes, a crash does not mean a whole Mac has frozen and needs physical rebooting) every time is a "minor inconvenience".

Regards

Imran

There appear to be two other threads related to this same issue but no resolution. From my own experience, it has nothing to do with iTunes, but probably Spotlight. In my case it began after the latest Safari (10.0.2) and El Capitan Security (10.11.6) updates.

Clearing Safari history, caches, etc had no effect, and neither did adding my drives to Spotlight's Privacy list ( to clear indexing of those drive ). Nor did deselecting the Spotlight options related to Safari, Bing, etc

I also tried to disable Spotlight searching per How To Turn OFF And ON Spotlight In Mac OS X El Capitan, but the message still appears after a ⌘-Space shortcut.

For reference, the other threads are: Error --> com.apple.Safari.History quit unexpectedly. and Spotlight - Safari History quitting

Dec 17, 2016 10:54 AM in response to tigerjacket

Thank you, tigerjacket, for tying these different discussion threads together.

I am having the same issue, with crash logs identical to the one IMRAN posted:

  • com.apple.Safari.History
  • Version: 11601 (11601.7.1)
  • Responsible: Spotlight
  • Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

and so on down through at least the Thread 0 Crashed details.

MacBookPro9,1 (Mid-2012 Non-Retina)

Mac OS X 10.11.6 (15G1212)

Totally stable system until running the Security Update and Safari 10.0.2 update. I have not updated iTunes (still 12.5.3.17) per reading online about removed or broken features.

Yesterday it crashed 3 times, seriously interrupting my novel writing thought flow. I did not notice the triggers.

Today, after the Mac was fully shut down overnight (my usual procedure) and started up in the morning, all was well until i did the Command-space bar invocation of Spotlight, then some number of seconds later, CRASH. I had not launched Safari and no Safari processes were showing in Activity Monitor. This com.apple.Safari.History process must not run very long, because i have yet to see it in Activity Monitor.

I have tried a couple of times since to crash it, re-invoking Command-space bar and entering something for Spotlight to search on: nothing: no further crashes.

One interesting thing i’m noticing is that the crashes are coming in pairs: there are two of them spaced very close to exactly 10 seconds apart, each of the 4 times (so far) it’s happened here.

From IMRAN’s report we might infer that s/he’s running (as most people do) from an OS admin-level account. I’m running from a standard user account, so at least we can infer that’s not a factor.

Question: is this happening for other people only within some number of hours (less than a day) after a fresh restart?

Reason i ask: this same Mac was totally unusable for about half a year, due to a very similar problem where mdworker kept crashing. I did a very careful squeaky clean reinstall back then, and the moment i moved my user files over (no preferences nor settings—nothing in the library. Just user-made document/data files) the problem reoccurred. I left the machine turned off for months, went back to work on the problem again, and it was gone—no changes on my part. Started using it as a regular-use machine for a month and a half now, and it’s been totally stable until this update. What i noticed with my mdworker issue was that it would repeatedly crash like a mofo for about 6 to 8 hours after a fresh startup, then something would time or count out or settle down such that the crashes would stop. If i left the machine running for days, there would be no further crashes until the next restart, at which point the cycle would repeat. Hence my question in this com.apple.Safari.History case.

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Problem: Apps are crashing

Description:

com.apple.Safari.History crashes when accessing Spotlight. Problem began after latest Safari (10.0.2) and El Capitan Security (10.11.6) updates. Clearing Safari history, and reindexing Spotlight (or removing all drives to Spotlight to reduce index) have no effect on problem. Tried creating a new user. The error does not appear when logged in as that user.
