AirPods disconnects on calls

AirPods pair correctly with iPhone 6s Plus (iOS 10.2) and randomly during the call they get disconnected. The BT connection gets lost and I have to connect them again manually.

Happens several times during long calls with no apparent pattern. The AirPods are fully charged.

The strange thing is that while listening to music, this problem doesn't show up, only on phone calls.

AIRPODS, iOS 10.2, null

I have solved this issue, but unfortunately not in the way I hoped. After talking with Apple Support and the Genius Bar, we came to the conclusion it's with the Apple Watch and the iPhone together. Everyone that has been having this issue has an Apple Watch as well. I went home and I unpaired the Apple Watch from my iPhone entirely, and unpaired the AirPods and removed them from Bluetooth entirely. I then paired JUST the AirPods to the iPhone and made test calls for hours with just the AirPods connected. No issues what so ever. After hours of testing, I repaired my Apple Watch and restored from backup. I made a test call and the AirPods disconnected from the iPhone after about 3 minutes. This means there is nothing wrong with any of the devices and we have to anxiously await for a software update from Apple. let's hope this gets fixed soon, this is super annoying. Basically can't use my watch if I want to use my AirPods. Great.

Logging my issue to keep the thread current. I am having the same problem described here. My config is as follows:

iPhone 6s running iOS 10.2.1.

AppleWatch Series 0 running watchOS 3.1.3

2016 AirPods

As mentioned in thread: Audio drops ONLY when making phone calls. Audio changes from audio source "AirPods" to "iPhone" during calls when using 'both' earbuds with microphone set to "Automatically Switch AirPods". Problem occurs when the iPhone's Bluetooth is also connected to AppleWatch.

Spoke to customer service and they had me reset all settings. Problem persisted just as it has for others in this thread. They suggested that I make an appointment at an Apple Store to get resolution in person. Could not resolve the issue over the phone.

I will experiment with the suggestions listed above and report back, if I have any progress.

Ok, I wrote a post earlier, but Apple deleted it due to mention of beta versions. But now the beta is public.

But as I have posted before, I had big problems with loss of connection. The actual case was that the Bluetooth on my iPhone 7 went off, disconnecting both AirPods and Apple Watch.

I tested the trick which involved resetting AirPods, disconnecting all Bluetooth devices and also turning off iCloud on the phone.(and then everything back again) I did all of these steps, and first attempt to make a call was without any improvement. Then, what I did was to make a call, wait for the Bluetooth to drop out, and then at the same moment I did a hard reset of the phone. If it was just luck or if it just needed the reboot, I don't know. But after I did these steps, the AirPods have been working flawlessly. And this was before I installed the iOS 10.3 Beta. And I can confirm that they still work after installing the iOS beta.

I'm using iPhone 7, with Watch 1 st. gen.

Beta OS on both iPhone and Watch.

I'm very satisfied with my AirPods.

A bit of a follow up since I installed 10.3 beta 3 - seems to be much better. So far have been able to reliably pick up a number of calls on the AirPods. Also I have recently purchased a pair of beatsX earbuds and I was experiencing the same problems with 10.3 beta 2 as I was getting with the AirPods with call audio not turning up on the beatsX. So I suspect the problem is a general issue with the iPhone 6 and W1 chip, and it's not specifically the AirPods in my case.

I haven't posted in quite awhile. Have my new AirPods from Apple support after sending in my old ones for engineering to view the logs. The firmware update to the new pair GREATLY improved performance with only occasional drops that would immediately reconnect- until yesterday.

I simply changed the function of the AirPods to play/pause and now they disconnect during calls constantly. Changed it back to Siri and no improvement. Still running an iPhone6s, Apple Watch Series2, and AirPods with the latest firmware and software (non beta). Absolutely furious this is still happening.

I have a 6S plus. Watch 2. AirPods.

Lots of dropping out. Calls where I can't hear anyone, then I'll hear the "reconnect sound" but still not hear anyone. Sometimes my phone will lock up until the person on the line hangs up (all whilst I can't hear them anyway).

Today is my last day I can return and really don't know what to do.

They cost me $229 for these little earphones and whilst they sound good enough, and the convenience in theory is good - ok not getting the results I want.

What's everyone else doing !? Waiting or returning or what?

I'm having similar issue (iPhone 6s, latest software, Apple Watch Series 1 sometimes connected, many times not even in the picture). Called Apple Support 2-3 weeks ago and was told to wipe phone and see what happens. I actually did it even though I felt that this was NOT encouraging and said that basically they had no idea what the issue is.

Very frustrating, of course, but I wonder why after so long there's no fix for it. This might warrant a stop by the Apple Store when I have time. Hoping for the best. A clean install and no "it just works" experience is more Microsoft Windows than Apple like. Hopefully things will improve all around sooner rather than later.

Incidentally, my Apple Watch recently unpaired itself from my phone, where I had to fully erase it ad repair - not a smooth or short process at all as well. The dropped connections on calls happen even when not wearing my Watch (powered off or not around). The idea that I'd have to unpair the Watch even when/if not using it to have the AirPods work properly is a bit infuriating. Hopefully a fix will be issued soon. Although it's been a while, so we're beyond soon already.

Just installed iOS 10.3 beta 3 and noticed some new issues over beta 2:

- long delay before AirPods connect to iPhone

- AppleWatch kept on ringing yesterday while the call was already transfered to my voicemail

So to me beta 3 is worse than beta 2.

My setup:

- iPhone 6S Plus

- AppleWatch gen 0

- AirPods

I really hope Apple gets this mess sorted out...
