AirPods disconnects on calls

AirPods pair correctly with iPhone 6s Plus (iOS 10.2) and randomly during the call they get disconnected. The BT connection gets lost and I have to connect them again manually.

Happens several times during long calls with no apparent pattern. The AirPods are fully charged.

The strange thing is that while listening to music, this problem doesn't show up, only on phone calls.

So I disconnected my Apple Watch and it didn't make a difference.

I was on the phone with a frustrating call centre person who did not understand what I was saying to begin with and then the headphones kept dropping out. I felt like screaming.

I have now just reset the network settings. Seeing if that will make a difference. If it doesn't I will walk into an Apple Store and take a dump. I'm ######## fuming ATM.

I have found only ONE thing that has solved the issue 100% of the time. It's an annoying workaround and shouldn't be the case but if you use just ONE airpod during a phone call, I've never had a single dropped call. This is with my apple watch connected and everything else as normal. It's become normal to me that as soon as I make a phone call, I simply remove one of the airpods (typically the left because the right one fits better). Ever since doing this, I've had no disconnections at all. Hopefully this gets fixed, but it works for now. When listening to music, I always 2 and I haven't had any issues.

I may have a solution.

AirPods are equipped with the ability to use the microphone on either side when talking and the switch from one microphone to the other can be automatic or manual.

I switched mine to manual (left it on Right side) and held a conversation for 65 minutes (my wife.... ) without getting disconnected. This solution also explains that the problem only presents when talking and not listening to music (microphone)

You can make the change when the AirPods are connected, then go to Setting--> Bluetooth, click on the ℹ and go to the end on the menu... where the option for Microphone is...

hope its works for everyone.

I don't understand why some of you are torturing yourselves by trying methods (e.g., resetting network settings, getting a replacement, wiping your phone, etc) that were reported as unsuccessful in this thread.

The ONLY viable solution at this point is to use iOS 10.3 beta (currently in beta 4). It takes only a few minutes to set it up to receive the public betas and they've been rock solid. Obviously, the fix will be part of the final 10.3 when it's released, but just go ahead and install 10.3 beta 4 now and stop increasing your chance of getting a heart attack over this.

I hope you are right, but in the meantime there is the report that 10.3 Beta 3 has worsened the improvements wrought by Beta 2. I understand Beta 4 is good (again), but it doesn't feel totally solved yet if successive versions sometimes take a backwards step.

But again: I'm really hoping you're right and 10.3 solves all these issues with my Airpods.

If I am paying $170 for an earphones, then I expect it should work flawlessly out of the box. I don't want to be a "beta user" for apple to find fixes for them and also paying for the product as well. This is a responsibility of apple team to test the product before launching, and release the appropriate firmware at same time of product launch. Since release of iphone 5, apple attitude is now "just launch it, and we will fix it later"....

I have the same issue. iPhone 6s Plus 10.2.1. Phone calls drop out while I'm walking around. Happens so often in the underground train in Munich while I'm watching my Udemy video classes. Makes it impossible to learn. I've heard that it's not an issue with the iPhone 7 so I'm gonna go buy and test it and then return the phone.

I've gone through Beta 1-4 and didn't realize any difference in the performance of the AirPods. Since I opted for the iOS beta program, I've had ZERO problems with the AirPods or my iPhone 6S. Some of you may be thinking that running iOS Beta is something scary because it says "beta" and may give you crashes, bugs, etc. My experience is the complete opposite. Nothing changed in the usage of my phone with the iOS Beta installations and AirPods work as they should.

I understand everyone's frustration. I was pretty upset about this issue as well at the beginning. It's within your rights to be angry at Apple and return the AirPods until the issue is resolved in iOS 10.3 update. However, if you think that they're worth the extra hassle of signing up for the public beta program, then you have that option.

Same here. 10.3 beta 3. Easy to sign up and easy to install. No issues any more (so far) on iPhone 6S with AirPods and Apple Watch (gen 1). I'm not sure why Apple does not acknowledge the issue in some fashion or another, if only with the ones that experience it (email, etc.). I even had an open case with Apple Support. Anyway, regardless, it seems fixed now and working as expected 100%. 🙂
