AirPods disconnects on calls

AirPods pair correctly with iPhone 6s Plus (iOS 10.2) and randomly during the call they get disconnected. The BT connection gets lost and I have to connect them again manually.

Happens several times during long calls with no apparent pattern. The AirPods are fully charged.

The strange thing is that while listening to music, this problem doesn't show up, only on phone calls.

I have a 7plus. I sporadically can't connect to calls with my airpods, my LG bluetooth as well as my Beats. It's clearly not a bluetooth issue but a connectivity issue with the phones. I spent 300+ for my beats and 150+ for the airpods. The phone was major expensive as well. I'm losing all confidence in Apple. All of my devices work great when listening to music, so it makes no sense at all that a call won't connect.

Here's a followup to my previous posts. Three weeks after re-pairing my Apple Watch (I'm on the iOS betas), which in turn followed a month of running the AirPods as the only BT device connected to the iPhone 6s Plus, things are still running well. No dropouts or connection problems.

Currently running iOS 10.3 beta 5 and although the connection drop issue during phone calls has been resolved, I still notice the following issues:

- AirPods do not always connect right away, sometimes I need to go to Bluetooth settings to connect them manually

- Bluetooth issues with my Apple Watch now: incoming call notification going to my iPhone instead of my watch or when it does go to my watch the incoming call notification keeps active even after I missed the call and it went to my voicemail

Again my setup:

- iPhone 6S Plus (iOS 10.3 beta 5)

- Apple Watch gen 0 (watchOS 3.1.3)

- AirPods (FW 3.5.1)

And once more, I really miss the days that Apple products just worked...

As many other people are confirming, the newest beta software has fixed this issue of disconnecting during calls. I had about an hour long conversation the other day and had no dropout. Thank goodness.

One thing to note is that like some other people are saying as well, it does seem to be a little less consistent with connecting immediately upon putting it in your ear. It seems to be taking much longer than it did with my airpods when I first got them. Not sure why this is. Hopefully it's all fixed soon.

Me too. Apple's attention to details seems to be slipping somewhat. They're still the best out there in my opinion, but I do also wish things "just worked" more.

There are many more moving parts these days and the company is so much bigger. A different beast altogether. Still, simplify , maintain focus, insist on excellence (this is where Steve Jobs' absence is maybe the most impactful), and, please communicate with your own tech support and customers regarding issues. The fact that iOS 10.3 (beta) fixed the AirPods issue (for most people) shows Apple is aware of the issue yet there has been no communication about it.

Exatly the same issue. iTunes play well in the AirPods , but the pods seem to get disconnected every now and then. It does not seem possible to reconnect during an ongoing phonecall . At least the other part on the line will hang up when not hearing anything. This behaviour makes them close to impossible to use , except for listening to music ! Had to switch back to my wired earplugs .

I get the impression most reviewers spend more time writing about a product than they do using it. In contrast, most people posting here have spent orders of magnitude more time using their stuff than typing about them.

This is basically why negative reviews tend to be the most helpful: an otherwise good product wont usually show its weaknesses until some time goes by.

In addition to my iPhone 6s, I also have an IPad Air 2 and Apple TV. I have the drop out issue on the 6s when making calls. However, when I make calls via the iPad Air 2, either through FaceTime or connected through my cell, I can use both Airpods for an extended period of time with no problems during the call. The airpods work flawlessly with the Ipad and the Apple Tv. The iphone is the only device on which I experience problems.

Update from 3 weeks ago. I was due to upgrade my phone so I went ahead and got the 7. At first it was 100% better considering I would lose BT connection on almost every call. I did lose BT connection on one of my conference calls a week later so I took the pods back to the store. They replaced the pods and I have had zero issues since. No BT disconnection, no sound going in and out. Nothing. While I do agree this is a software issue and or a software and hardware combination issue, I would appreciate if apple would officially launch the new software. I am not aloud to use beta version software on my company phone. I can only update officially launched versions. Until then I will hope my luck with no drop connection continues as these pods are very nice to use when they are working properly.

Got my replacement AirPods today via Fedex. A few hours with them on multiple devices running latest non-beta releases of macOS and iOS. My iPhone 6s Plus had the connection issues with calls AND music last time. So far, so good.

I did mention to Apple support that my iPhone, since updating to iOS 10, had been pausing itself like it had a mind of its own. Annoying and mystifying. I thought it was Apple Music just making sure I wasn't forgetting to turn my music off once in a while. I looked this up and decided to force close all apps (tons of them), then do a hard reset on my iPhone/power cycle Apple Watch Series 0. Maybe this contributed to the problems? Although, my previous pair of AirPods wouldn't just pause, they'd disconnect entirely from the iPhone.

Fingers crossed this may have fixed it for me. Usage over coming days will tell or not.
