Everything loses a charge over time, even if it's not in use. If you never use your phone and has been asleep, your phone will still lose a charge. Similar with the AirPods. The case charges the ear pieces. If over the course of a day or so, yes, the case will drain more than the ear pieces as the case is keeping them charged.

It's very interesting to notice more people are having the same issue. Both my AirPods and case are losing significant amount of battery life without any usage. I actually did a little experiment and left the charger plus AirPods separately on the tabel over night. Both were 100% charged. This morning the charger/case dropped to 80%. This is without the AirPods being in the case!

AirPods dropped from 100% to 45%.

I slept around 7 hours.

I have a similar problem with my Airpod case. This morning I took the case off charge and verified both Airbuds and case were at 100%, six hours later and without using the Airpods (or taking them out of the case) the case was at 84% and the Airbuds were still at 100%. After that I took the Airbuds out of the case and let it sit for two hours and there was no battery drain. It would appear that either the Airbuds or the case are draining charge even when just sitting not in use. I have not yet had a chance to check my wife's Airbuds (she is using them all the time) but I will check them when I can.

Other than that ... I love my Airpods 🙂

I sure hope Apple looks into this issue.

I also have something similar. I've tracked it in more detail over the last 24 hrs. Not using the AirPods at all the case has lost 50% of its charge in 24 hrs. The AirPods fluctuated between 100%-95% during this time as I periodically checked but didn't use them. It appears the AirPods are continually discharging and the case is trying to keep them topped up. I'd have thought the AirPods should goto sleep while in the case and discharge would be minimal but this doesn't appear to be the case. I was just going to raise it with Apple in the new year as I doubt they'd have stock in store to replace them yet.

What would be acceptable? I see consistently about 20-25% battery drop on the case in a 24 hour period. I haven't used mine for 2.5 days (61 hours, to be exact). My case is at 45% charge. Due to the size of the case and that it is keeping the AirPods charged at 100%, I hardly think that is excessive battery drain, since there is no on/off switch on any of the devices.

According to their documentation when they are put in the case they are turned off. I do not think that a 20-25% drain in battery over 24 hours for a product that is not in use is acceptable in any way.

My wife's Airpods are not exhibiting the same behavior, they lost 1% over 12 hours last night ... that is more reasonable. If mine were doing that I would be happy.
