I am having the exact same issue, with the screenshot you provided, and the back arrow is not responsive. This happened after the 11.2 software update on iphone 6 Plus. I can intentionally make this error occur by enlarging the text under General, Accessibility, Larger Text. Turning on this feature CAUSES this problem, and turning it off allows iMessage back arrow and screens to function normally. I purchased an iPhone 7 Plus and the exact same problem still exists. After many hours on the phone with Apple support, and several senior advisors over the course of 5 frustrating days, they confirmed this must be a software issue, "bug", and was sent to engineering. The only fix is to wait for a software update. I can attempt to enlarge the the text under Display and Brightness, moving the button all the way to the right and the text does not even enlarge. I have poor vision and this software issue has really made if difficult to use my phone, period. This problem is not acceptable, and Apple needs to initiate a software update ASAP to correct these "bugs". I have been told all I can do at this point is wait for the update.

Patrick, that is exactly what my Mother's problem was. I saw your post after I made my comment, and had my mother go back in and edit the text back to the standard, and that completely fixed her problem. She had edited the text size to a larger size so that she can see the screen without her reading glasses. As soon as she put it back, it worked perfectly. Thank you!!!
Apple, this is an issue that needs to be fixed. Not everyone has perfect vision, and older people need to adjust the text sizes to help them see. My mother has an iPhone 6+ which is a little easier to see, but my father is still using an iPhone 4.
Try playing with your text size.
(found in Settings > Display and Brightness).
In this case the text size was too large.
This worked for an IPhone 5S and iOS 11. You could only go up to a certain text size before the back button on your message starts bugging out.
I had this problem with my 6. I switched to x last week and problem continues. I suspect it has to do with large text size. The back button seems to work without failure if I use default text size. BTW, swiping "<" seems to work well with large text size.
Others?
I switched back to the default text size and the back arrow works 100% every time now on my 6 plus. Problem solved kind of although i do like the larger text size I’ll have to live without it for now. Something for Apple to fix in one of the next of many updates I’m sure are coming.
The solution was previously posted. Change your font size back to normal. NO large font. Resolves the bug in iMessage.
Try adjusting your text size down. I was having the same problem and this fixed it.
Ok, I found a solution that worked for me. If you go to Setting>General>Reset>Reset All Settings it will reset to default and then reboot. During the reboot it actually reinstalled or repaired iOS 11.1. So there is a possibility that my original upgrade had a problem but it let me operate anyway. All back functions now work and performance is back to normal.
Hope this works for others.

This also worked for me I have an iPhone 6 Plus. But as soon as I tried to change the size of the text to make it larger the problem returned. The text size has to stay at factory settings for the back arrow to work and not see the the the "edit" or "cancel" squares. Do better Apple!!!!! As soon as I did the software update to 11.2 this problem started, along with other issues. I was told by an Apple representative that it is probably caused by "bugs" in the the update. Great, thanks Apple for totaling screwing up my phone to the point I could not use it. I had to buy a cheap prepaid to have a working phone.
One last thing. Since you mentioned you have an 8, go to settings > display & brightness > display zoom (its towards the bottom of that page) does it say standard or zoom?
Also do you have any font accomidarions enabled like bigger text size or bold text?
If it continues to be an issue I would try reducing the text size by one notch and see if that helps? Or set the screen to standard instead of zoomed. I suspect the screen size is too small for the larger text on the screen which is why it may be a problem. I hope that helps you a little bit and thanks for replying!
I adjusted my font size as someone suggested & it helped. Of course, I can’t read it as easily but at least I can go back when I need to.
Hi. It could be your messages data updating after a software update. Close the app and reopen it or rebooting the phone will help.
My 6s started this back button bs with the first 11 upgrade. Back then i tried the soft reset and it didn’t do anything other than i had to spend a week tweaking my phone to get it back to normal. Very frustrating to say the least. One thing that works for me is swiping the back arrow instead of just pressing it.
Hi. Try rebooting your phone first.
