AirPods losing Bluetooth connection during calls

My AirPods are working just fine with my iPhone 6S during music playback, but I routinely lose my BT connection during phone calls. I have to manually reconnect in the BT settings screen to continue. This happens even when the phone is less than two feet from my AirPods. I've reset the AirPods several times, I've restarted my phone several times, no change. In one case I lost the connection three times in a 10 minute call.

My assumption is that the cell radio is causing interference with the BT radio somehow. I'm on Verizon in case that matters.

I know others have reported this problem. Has anyone found a solution?

Is anyone here using Tile (app + physical tiles) -- which communicate via Bluetooth?

On another forum, a person "turned off Tile completely" and that solved his AirPod droppout problems. I'm curious if anyone here has tried Tile as a possible root-cause?

I also have this issue, Apple Replaced my AirPods and my iPhone 6s plus. Seems like the dropping while using phone has been better since the phone replacement. However I am still having issues with all audio cutting out, realized it has to do with where I am standing. I work in Downtown Chicago, every time I walk down the sidewalk north <> south and there is a gap between buildings from west => east, my audio starts cutting out, if I am standing in front of a building and it is blocking the west => east, (example behind a large pillar), totally fine. or if brick or a wall is blocking, whatever seems to be transmitting interference (maybe television stations or radio?) the connection is perfect. So I am not sure what kind of shielding could be introduced for this or if there is a high/low end of the frequency used like as in wi-fi.

Looked for Bluetooth density meter and not finding any luck.

However calls are good now as long as I stay out of the aforementioned areas. So when I walk here I do not listen to music with them, or expect it to cut out. Now that my expectations are reset it's not that bad and makes sense. Wish there was something that accounted for this somehow.

I have, iPhone 6s Plus, Apple Watch, Tile, and AirPods.

*Update to my earlier post.

Over lunch my co-worker tried the AirPods with his iPhone 7 and had no issues. When he tried with my phone he had music cut out in the exact same manner as I did.

He has nothing paired other than the AirPods, this was a good test as it means it is something with either my phone, as it was swapped it would point to the information that is on the device, or the extra items I have connected to bluetooth. Will do more testing.

I am also having this problem. It's frustrating and embarrassing (when I've used it unsuccessfully on business calls). I sure hope they resolve this soon, otherwise I will have to return these to Best Buy before the return window expires. I love the sound quality when playing music, they stay in my ears when I run, they're very lightweight (almost not even there), and the voice quality on calls -when it works- is good. I just can't get a reliable Bluetooth call connection to save my life. Music-only works flawlessly. IPhone 6s Plus, Apple Watch Series 2 Nike version. Doesn't seem to matter whether the watch is present or not. All software is updated to the version of iOS. Come on Apple!

Just an FYI, I called apple support, I actually wanted to return the airpods. The rep had me connect the airpods to my phone (iphone 6) and while connected, go into the phone settings and turn off bluetooth, wait a minute and then turn it back on. This was this past Tuesday night and I'm happy to say, I have not dropped a call since and I've had about five to six calls a day on the airpods. To be transparent, my iwatch broke the same day so I have not had my iwatch on since that time.

March 29, 2017 Update: I tried various potential fixes over the last three months but nothing worked: I was still dropping calls with my AirPods. I have a friend with the same iPhone 6S + Apple Watch + AirPod config and he had the same problem.

I updated my iPhone and my Watch to the new 10.3 and 3.2 OSes, respectively, and my AirPods seem to work during calls now. I hesitate to count my chickens but maybe the issues been fixed? My friend hasn't yet updated so I can't report on his success or failure.

I'm seeing the same issue with my Tiles. If I make a phone call with the Tile app in the background, I get no call audio through the AirPods. If I force close the Tile app it works. I usually have 2 of the new Tiles and 1 first-gen Tile connected to my phone at work. Not a perfect solution, but thanks for pointing out this workaround!

FWIW I think Tile was totally the issue for me, finally gave up and disabled it. It's annoying because I like the idea of tracking things, but then again I don't like the idea of a company like Tile always knowing where me an my things are. Apple need to come out with their own tracking devices, one of the few companies I trust with my personal data.

I was having problems getting my airpods to connect for my daily 8 a.m. conference call for work. I finally went to apple store and they replaced the airpods with a new pair..but it started happening again.

Then I got the new iPhone 8. it CONTINUED happening. New airpods, new iPhone, same problem. Couldn't figure it out.

Then I deleted the TILE app off my phone (which was connected to six or seven tile devcies in my day to day life/household). Now the airpods work.
