Metal shavings stuck to Airpods case

User uploaded fileThis is a constant problem, I will clean the shavings off best I can however because of the lip/ design of the lid and case you can never get rid of them all. Could I use a stronger magnet to remove the shavings and if I do will that effect any of the permanent magnets, effect antenna, W1 Chip...

within the device?

Q-tips and cloths are current choice... however this again doesn't work the best.

The absolute best way to clean this off perfectly is scotch tape. Place the tape over the case magnet areas that have the metal shavings stuck on them and using a mechanical pencil with the lead retracted so you are using the plastic tip to push the scotch tape directly on to the areas with the metal shavings stuck on them. Let it sit on there for 30 seconds or so and then slowly remove the scotch tape. Viola! This works because the strength of the tape is stronger than the magnet.

I don't think there is a problem with the hinge either. It's just metal on metal friction (presumably) grinding away at it, causing the metal dust to collect where the magnets are. That doesn't mean the issue can't be improved upon with a design change in future generation.

But to me... I don't really care. Airpods are awesome. I'd buy another pair today if I lost them.

Case looks dirty... so what!?

My 2 cents.

I misunderstood you're statement, " but now realizing it is metal... it's gotta be the hinge". My apologies.

I think your right, i've talked to many people and they all say the same thing. My theory is that it might be the magnets inside braking down from letting it snap shut to hard and repeated openings and closings. This might not be the case for all of them but for the people that don't work around metals try cleaning them up and be more genital when you close it and see if that stops them from returning.

I am maintenance employee, I am required to wear company uniforms. The uniforms are washed and laundered by Cintas. I am almost positive that I am picking up the shavings just having the AirPods in my pocket. It's not the type of work I'm doing or that I might have them close to something I'm working on.

A bag would work however would become cumbersome as I am taking the AirPods out of my ears & sticking them back in the case or just taking the AirPods out so I can talk to others several times a day.

I have also had this issue 2x now. I took in my first pair to the APPLE store the clerk ***** and told me it was me. I told him I work in an office there is NO metal. I got him to replace them and now the new ones are doing the same thing. When I see this I am just blown away at the HUGE mess APPLE has. This is not only a serious concern but a DANGER to people using these.

Apple how do you plan to fix this issue? We should not have to worry about metal going in our ears when using your products?

Yes, I'm aware of that.
