"Unable to activate Touch ID on this iPhone"

This is the message I receive after every restart or hard reboot. Touch ID had been working just fine on my iPhone 6s Plus with 10.2.1, but just stopped. When I go into Touch ID & Passcode, "Add a Fingerprint..." is grayed out, and all toggles for what to use Touch ID are toggled off, and when I try to change them, to on, I get the message "Failed Unable to complete Touch ID setup. Please go back and try again."

From what I can find on these forums and online (Forbes has a couple of good articles on this), I do not appear to be alone with this issue, but I have yet to see any fixes.

If you are unable to activate Touch ID your phone has a hardware problem. There is no solution other than to have Apple repair it. The most common cause of this error is having the screen or HOME button replaced by an unqualified technician. In this case there is nothing you can do; Apple won't touch it if it has been repaired outside of Apple's repair service.

If the screen has never been replaced then it's just a random failure; make an appointment with an Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP): Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Well, as a matter of fact, I am going to try a 3rd party, since Apple was utterly useless. Or, I will dump the phone and never get any Apple devise again. I've had my 6sPlus phone just over two years, but with minimal use (twice a day checking texts and sometimes emails, making an occasional call less than once a week). I nerve set up touch ID, but the error message keeps reoccurring, home button is getting hot and batteries don't last through the night (without use), so I can't even use it as a clock alarm, unless plugged the whole night. Apple is all to happy to try various solutions, one of them replacing the face £160, with no guarantee that this would fix the problem. Under no circumstances I would spend £160 in addition to the obscene price of the phone which should last for years (just as my other phones for fraction of the price). I am sick and tired with all the new models coming one after another, simply because the previous versions were not made as good as they should be in the 1st place. The phone is just one of the examples, but the the same applies to i Pads (mine has not been usable for ages). I wouldn't say that the Air book I got some time ago is worth the money either. I feel stupid for spending thousands of pounds (including presents for the family), but my journey with Apple ends here.

I have owned about 25 Apple products including SE in 1885. 10 computer and numerous iPads and phones.

ijust sent in an iPad where the lightning cord wouldn’t go In. 3 months old. Apple used a miscropic camera on the port and refused to open iPad saying I had scratched It. Couldn’t see with naked eye. I begged them to at least open it and look. Refused. Wanted 450 for refurbished unit. They sent it back. I took it to local repairman. He fixed it and said it was impossible for user error to have caused problem. There is no recourse. I still have that iPad, a 12” Pro, iPhone X, 6s pluse 5 iMacs, and a couple desktop units.

I cant activate Touch ID, but know Apple won’t help.

Nice loyal company, Apple

I never used Touch ID, but still doesn't work, which, according to Apple makes the phone hot and drains batteries fast. Apple made me travel 60 miles on Saturday to see their "genius" just to make me wait for ever ,and telling me that they would email me instructions how to wipe out my phone and start again. Either try this or pay £160 for new face (no guarantee if would work either). I would have to be crazy to add £160 to the already ridiculously expensive poor quality phone. They ruined my weekend. Their other ideas were to switch everything off (alerts, apps), which is most preposterous, sine the only purpose of such phone (if it worked) would be to have some extras. I will certainly no longer spend a penny on their products. People shod stop buying their products and teach them some respect for people who spent thousands of pounds for their gimmicks.

It will not be mine anymore. I've had several phones, hoping the next one would be better and would last for a while, had iPad which became slow and useless very fast (with nothing on it & really minimal use), air book (not rally possible to do any serious work on it), and the apple watch, which is almost as useful as my Fitbit, but for only ~ £90.

Apple "made" you? How, exactly, did they force you to make the trip? Did they threaten you with the vast power of the Mother Ship?

Even that doesn't "make" or "force" someone do something. A human being can not be forced to do anything against his/her will. The only thing that can be done is to advise him/her of consequences.

Yes and I'm an Apple shill!

It’s a second hand phone so not that bothered as the 6s only cost $150, I was just curious.

However, I think everyone could do with less of your ‘up your own self’ attitude. People are merely asking questions in general and don’t require any condescending attitude. If it pains an individual so much to answer, then perhaps for their own benefit they should refrain in future.

I have this similar problem but, it has gotten worse. After 3 weeks of this my home button has completely stopped working. I don’t get how this happened. My iPhone has never been cracked or has ever been opened up. The button still clicks perfectly. This is just so frustrating because you use the home button so much everyday and not being able to use it is difficult.
