"Unable to activate Touch ID on this iPhone"

This is the message I receive after every restart or hard reboot. Touch ID had been working just fine on my iPhone 6s Plus with 10.2.1, but just stopped. When I go into Touch ID & Passcode, "Add a Fingerprint..." is grayed out, and all toggles for what to use Touch ID are toggled off, and when I try to change them, to on, I get the message "Failed Unable to complete Touch ID setup. Please go back and try again."

From what I can find on these forums and online (Forbes has a couple of good articles on this), I do not appear to be alone with this issue, but I have yet to see any fixes.

Hi, I have an iPhone 7 and I have the same problem. Since my home button isn’t actually controlled with “mechanism” it just simply doesn’t work anymore. The phone keeps sending me a notification about how it cannot enable Touch ID. I do not have Apple Care for my phone so if I bring it to the Apple Store will I have to pay?

Me too. The TouchId suddenly failed on my iPhone 6. I did not perform any repair or modification on it. It also drains out fully charge battery in a few hours. I contacted Apple Authorized Reseller and Repair Center and they told me touchId problem cannot be repaired. If I want to solve the problem I have to change to a new one (1 to 1 exchange). It will cost me around Usd 500. That is insane!

I thought Apple products has a very high quality. I'm disappointed.

iTunes & Apps Store and Apple Pay have been turned off since I noticed the problem 2 weeks ago. I have shut down my iPhone 6, turned it back on, and immediately get an error message saying unable to activate Touch ID, even before I can tap on settings. When in Touch ID & Passcode, the option to Add Fingerprints is grayed our. Anyone have tips for my situation? Noticed the problem after updating to the most recent iOS version.

Hi, I am experiencing exactly the same problem and haven't found a solution yet. it was after i updated the IOS 😟 suddenly my touch ID was not working 😢 😢 i hope Apple can help fix this.

So you've made an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store? Or contacted Apple using the Contact Support link in the upper right of every page of these forums?

Same here, ID just quit. No good reason - no new apps or changes to the phone. Worked for 2+ yea s fine.

Tried Apple Support chat. Told me to try new finger, but this is also grayed out.

They do not know how to fix it, or just don’t care.

Apple needs to try harder, and fix this in the iOS upgrade. It would benefit them also, since payments and new app downloads were easy and fast.

Lost some confidence in them. Maybe they are telling us to shell out $1,000 on new phone, since no support for phones over 2 years they of will be forthcoming.

I have the same problem now. I bought my iPad 2 weeks ago, the touch ID was working - I turned it off because I was going to be on a long flight and when I turn it off, the touch ID wasn't working. I didn't do anything, just turned it off and turned it on again. On the flight, it came in my backpack together with my laptop. Nothing happened.

How have you guys solved this problem? thanks

same issue. The phone is just over two years old and the service provider (o2) are saying that the legal advice given on the Apple website about repairs being free under EU Consumer Rights is not true. According to them I have to pay for a repair. I contacted Citizen's Advice and they confirm that Apple are correct and O2 should do the repair/replacement for free. It appears, however, that I have to get a full diagnostics done on the phone to send to o2 to prove that it is a hardware/software issue. My nearest Apple store is Bluewater and it is shut currently. So I have to either pay for the diagnostics with a local reseller or go up to London simply to get the confirmation letter to send to o2 and seek to persuade them to comply with UK Consumer law. I wish Apple had easier ways to solve issues like this.

Well, as a matter of fact, I am going to try a 3rd party, since Apple was utterly useless. Or, I will dump the phone and never get any Apple devise again. I've had my 6sPlus phone just over two years, but with minimal use (twice a day checking texts and sometimes emails, making an occasional call less than once a week). I nerve set up touch ID, but the error message keeps reoccurring, home button is getting hot and batteries don't last through the night (without use), so I can't even use it as a clock alarm, unless plugged the whole night. Apple is all to happy to try various solutions, one of them replacing the face £160, with no guarantee that this would fix the problem. Under no circumstances I would spend £160 in addition to the obscene price of the phone which should last for years (just as my other phones for fraction of the price). I am sick and tired with all the new models coming one after another, simply because the previous versions were not made as good as they should be in the 1st place. The phone is just one of the examples, but the the same applies to i Pads (mine has not been usable for ages). I wouldn't say that the Air book I got some time ago is worth the money either. I feel stupid for spending thousands of pounds (including presents for the family), but my journey with Apple ends here.
