apple watch sudden screen shatter

Hi, my wife's Apple Watch screen has suddenly shattered. The watch was on her wrist and we were just watching tv. Her wrist wasn't moving, we heard a crack, then the screen had shattered completely. I know this sounds completely strange but it actually happened! Has anyone else heard of such a fault? I could understand if the Watch had been dropped or knocked but it wasn't, it was stationary on her wrist?

Any ideas?

Thanks Richard

Hi,

I am currently going through the motions with Apple. This fault seems so strange; I kid you not, my wife was sitting on the sofa watching tv, her Watch sounded an alarm (incoming text), within a split second we heared a small pop, and the screen shattered entirely. I'm not confident Apple are going to believe this, but I will keep you posted! The watch is being posted back very soon for inspection

The same thing happened to me. It break down only after 10 months. The battery is visibly swollen. I send it via BestBuy. Apple told that it is "abuse" and did not fix it. I believe that it is "abuse" on the apple side and fradulant. You know we are powerless confronting this giant. I hope Karma will catch with them. I am moving from Apple and I promised myself not to ever support them.

My screen shattered today while being on my dresser on its charger. The battery was low and the touch screen was acting weird in the corner, I set it on the charger and came back to it about 20 mins later and the screen was shattered. I'm so upset. Im glad I'm not the only one! Im just glad it didn't shatter half an hour earlier at work, as I work with adaptive and special needs kids.

This happened to me today as well. Noticed a small crack forming and on my way to the Apple store, I went to check the time and noticed the screen had completely shattered while it was on my wrist. The Apple "Genius" told me this was a result of physical abuse and wanted to see pictures of my watch before it shattered. I didn't take any because I was on my way to the store to show them the crack. Basically, I was told by the "Genius" it was my fault and I was lying. Apple support was no help. They said that to claim the repair under the defect recall, I had to take the watch to the store and have a "Genius" assess as to whether this was covered under the recall. Huh? I am supposed to go back to the same place that accused me of lying? Instead of Apple being concerned that their watch is shattering while someone is wearing it and being accountable for this defect, they are making it hard for someone to get the watch fixed.

I think they really need to rethink how to handle this. I have the same experience, being told I was lying by not being believed, their word against yours. It becomes a case of the customer is never right because we are never wrong. When you buy Apple products for decades and to be called a liar by them is hurtful when you have stood by them they treat you without the same care or loyalty. I hope they listen and not just delete this as critical. I was actually hurt and offended by my experience. I can’t even look at the watches now.

If so many watches, which are sold as sport watches, cannot take bumping or sports activities they have an issue with design. If it’s not the case then the actual material is not doing its job. What I feel like is happening is the battery overheats and expands the screen. In my case after much discussion and rejection by Apple I returned it to the store of purchase under consumer law because it did not perform as it should. A retailer should not lob you back to Apple, or any manufacturer.

Yes, by the time I got my phone to photograph the event it had overheated to too hot to touch and shattered.

Update. Spoke to another Apple Support rep and I find their logic hilarious and she didn't seem to see the idiotic logic. Apparently, if the screen shatters but the watch is still operational, it is physical abuse. If, however, the screen shatters and the watch does not function, it is not physical abuse. Apple also refuses to take any responsibility on watches where the screen shatters for no reason. Again, this must be your fault. To resolve my issue, I have to go back to the Apple store and get them to ship it to Apple. Another waste of an hour. Regardless, whether the watch is fixed or not, I'm not keeping the watch. I am going to find another smart watch. I used to have a Fitbit and I really liked it. Long battery life and it did everything I wanted it to do. My wife got me an Apple watch and I've hated it ever since because I still think it is inferior to all others.
