apple watch sudden screen shatter

Hi, my wife's Apple Watch screen has suddenly shattered. The watch was on her wrist and we were just watching tv. Her wrist wasn't moving, we heard a crack, then the screen had shattered completely. I know this sounds completely strange but it actually happened! Has anyone else heard of such a fault? I could understand if the Watch had been dropped or knocked but it wasn't, it was stationary on her wrist?

Any ideas?

Thanks Richard

Isn't that sooo crazy! My unscratched, perfect screen shattered overnight on the charger. I spoke with someone on the phone first who said to send my 4-month-old watch in and see if it would be covered by warranty. But, I was impatient and took it in to the Apple Store. They checked it out and said the screen had to have been damaged externally--they said the battery wasn't swollen--but they would send it in under warranty just to see. I got an email saying the techs checked my broken watch out and that I would have to pay $229 to fix the screen because it was due to external damage. I called and ended up speaking with a senior advisor who told me to "not lose hope" but that they would send it back to me damaged. Upon receiving the damaged watch, I was supposed to email the senior advisor and let her know I received it. So, I did. At that point, the senior advisor said she did some research and I could send my watch in again and Apple would fix or replace it. I got a new watch back (different serial number). I'm grateful they fixed my watch that was obviously defective. I hope Apple kept my watch and is looking at it with a fine-tooth comb to see if they can figure out what caused mine to break and fix the problem to help everyone who is having this same issue. I count myself lucky! But, I did have a nice fitbit picked out to replace my Apple watch! Haha. If my watch breaks again soon, I really am not going to buy another. Although I still like the bazillion other Apple products our family owns and uses.

My watch was on the charger last night and was cracked when I woke up. Cut the end of my finger when I went to swipe up in the morning. It has a single crack that runs the entire perimeter of the screen, essentially along the curved part of the glass. This must be a weak point aka design flaw. Watch is 42mm aluminium: Space Grey, series 3 with cellular. 1 month old.

Now my watch bcame overheated last week, burnt my wrist, then cracked my screen..

Called in the problem 3 days ago to Apple and they asked for photos which I have sent.. and no response yet.

Poor show Apple.

Do we report this to the media like the exploding Samsung phones.. ?

I’m not crazy for a replacement .. lost trust in the product which is less than a year young..and my wrist burn is tender..

Poor show indeed Apple

Same sort of problem, the first time I woke in the morning to find my screen broken. I had not been aware of having done anthing to the watch, it had certainly not been dropped. Called Apple support and sent the watch back to Apple, they came back and said it had been hit and was therefor not under warranty- I paid up £240 or something and got a replacement new watch. Had the new watch about a month and the it’s screen broke again I was not aware of having done anything unusual. Contacted again, watch sent off , told it had been hit and I would been to pay up again for a new watch. I was am well ‘****** off’ - I’m seventy, have worn a watch all my life and never had to get a broken watch glass replaced. As far as I am concerned the Apple Watch - MP0D2B/A Series 2 38mm SpGr AI Black Sp is not fit for purpose, Apple don’t seem to agree but that’s probably not surprising as they always know best!!! I like the Apple Watch but I can’t afford to buy a new one every time the glass breaks.

I have had this exact same problem, at my desk having a catch up with 2 others we hear a weird pop noise look at my wrist to see shattered and glass all over the desk.

sent to apple they say its damaged.... I have 2 people witness that it suddenly happened.

I went into store who say they can only do what the repair centre said and tried to charge £220 to get it fixed!

Called customer services who don't seem to be able to help.

Normally if i drop my phone etc i pay and have it fixed but this is really winding me up as i actually have not damaged the watch or dropped it etc.

Very disappointed as only purchased in November.

Add another Apple Series 3 to the list of spontaneously cracking screens. Gave it to my wife for Mothers Day (2018). Not even a week out of the box. She looked down and noticed a crack around the outside of the screen. In just the short time she had it, she had already loved it and treated it with the utmost care. She is incredibly disappointed.

Apple advised to send it in and they’ll evaluate it. We’ll see if they’ll handle this fairly. I’m not encouraged by many of these posts.

While Apple can be reasonably worried about fraud with this type of problem, by now, they should have developed some way of reasonably corroborating how it occurred. With such tight spaces in these devices, it wouldn’t take much to break that kind of material if a battery swelled even in the slightest imperceptible way (or vented in the sealed compartment).

If they don’t do the right thing here, I plan to do my best to attract media attention to this issue. This is a serious problem for many reasons, not the least of which is customer safety.

My watch screen has cracked the same way as well. Put it on the charger on my nightstand last night. Watch was perfectly fine. Woke up this morning and the screen had cracked at the right side, bottom and part of the left side with a hair line crack across the upper middle part.

It’s a series 3. I bought it less than 2 months ago.

Took it to the Apple store today, told them what happened. The woman I spoke to didn’t believe me. Said there was a point of impact on the corner and it cracked from that. It’s being sent to their repair center for “further inspection.” After reading this thread I’m not hopeful. I do have Apple Care... so it would be a $70 fee to replace... however I’m not inclined to pay it. I’d rather take Apple to small claims court. Yes, I have that much time to waste.

Not really sure how my watch got itself off the charger, banged itself around, cracked itself then put itself back onto the charger without my noticing just to make Apple some extra $$$ off the product... that’s a smarter watch than I bargained for. -.-

The same thing just happened to me! I have the new larger Apple 3 watch and bought it new 35 days ago. I took it off and heard a cracking but I thought it was something else, then I looked and saw the face shattered! I did not drop it or bump it and have been very careful with it. Now the touch sensor does not work either. I pray Apple will replace it!

Ditto here too! I had my watch for 13 days(Series 3 42mm). I was sitting still and the screen just popped open on my wrist. So disappointed. Even more disappointed that Apple has disputed hundreds of these claims from loyal Apple supporters. I sent my watch off today to Apple repair via Geek Squad at Best Buy. The ladie told me she’s seen a handful of these same issues. We’ll see how it goes.
