apple watch sudden screen shatter

Hi, my wife's Apple Watch screen has suddenly shattered. The watch was on her wrist and we were just watching tv. Her wrist wasn't moving, we heard a crack, then the screen had shattered completely. I know this sounds completely strange but it actually happened! Has anyone else heard of such a fault? I could understand if the Watch had been dropped or knocked but it wasn't, it was stationary on her wrist?

Any ideas?

Thanks Richard

Isn't that sooo crazy! My unscratched, perfect screen shattered overnight on the charger. I spoke with someone on the phone first who said to send my 4-month-old watch in and see if it would be covered by warranty. But, I was impatient and took it in to the Apple Store. They checked it out and said the screen had to have been damaged externally--they said the battery wasn't swollen--but they would send it in under warranty just to see. I got an email saying the techs checked my broken watch out and that I would have to pay $229 to fix the screen because it was due to external damage. I called and ended up speaking with a senior advisor who told me to "not lose hope" but that they would send it back to me damaged. Upon receiving the damaged watch, I was supposed to email the senior advisor and let her know I received it. So, I did. At that point, the senior advisor said she did some research and I could send my watch in again and Apple would fix or replace it. I got a new watch back (different serial number). I'm grateful they fixed my watch that was obviously defective. I hope Apple kept my watch and is looking at it with a fine-tooth comb to see if they can figure out what caused mine to break and fix the problem to help everyone who is having this same issue. I count myself lucky! But, I did have a nice fitbit picked out to replace my Apple watch! Haha. If my watch breaks again soon, I really am not going to buy another. Although I still like the bazillion other Apple products our family owns and uses.

I got the same problem. I placed my apple watch on the charger last nite. After a few hours, I found the whole screen cracked around the perimeter...just like the others are talking about. But my watch is out of warranty...I have made an appointment in one of their retail shop to review the situation. Does Apple knows about such manufacturing fault of the watch?User uploaded file

I sent a letter to Apple in Ireland about my dissatisfaction and also an email to Tim Cook. Ireland did get in touch but wouldn't deviate from their insistence that it was impact damage. It wasn't. I can't see the point of paying £220 plus for a repair when the same thing could well happen again. There is obviously a flaw in the watch design but they are never going to admit it. Instead they choose to infer that their customers are liars. I will not buy anything from Apple ever again.

I took my cracked apple watch to the apple store for checking. After a brief check, the staff said that the crack was not due to swollen battery and insisted that the crack was made by outside force, kept saying that I need to pay for repair cost of hk$1898. I was so angry that Apple didn't treat this problem seriously but to blame its customers for this design fault. the staff finally agree to send my watch back to the engineering team for further checking. I don't know if Apple will replace the watch for me free of charge especially it is not under warranty anymore....I still receive no news after 10 days.

As a native English speaker I have a real problem with “almost“ and “exactly” in the same sentence, but... 🤐

There is a logical explanation if we discount those unfortunate watches with completely smashed faces which look like they got hit by a truck. This requires understanding two basic engineering facts,

1. Any crack in any material will tend to propagate along the path of least resistance.

2. Any change in physical properties like thickness, curvature, angles, radius of corners, etc will create some kind of local change in stress and the strength of the material. In other words, almost any design will create a zone where a crack is likely to follow a similar path, and this is an unavoidable fact. Increasing strength in one weaker area simply moves the weakest point to somewhere else like a game of whack-a-mole.

I said “almost any design”. There is one geometric shape which avoids this weakness. The big problem is that a seamless hollow glass sphere with constant wall thickness is very difficult to fabricate, even more difficult to get the working electronics inside, and completely impractical to wear as a watch. Maybe that’s why Jony Ive didn’t go that route.

Hi! I bought my watch at an authorized reseller. They have a repair service and if they can't fix the problem they send it to Apple. So the fee is for their own service and not Apple. The reseller informed me about it before I handed over my device. However, I didn't get a decent explanation about the damage. They just told me that it couldn't be fixed and they never saw this problem before... I am now waiting until I get my device back so I can go to an Apple Store.

The same exact thing happened to me and my sister. APPLE BLAMED BOTH OF US for the damage. They sent it off for diagnosis and sent us an email saying there was no swollen battery found and it was our fault. Our family has been loyal customers to apple for many years and it is shocking to have to go through many hours on the phone with different advisors to just end up having to pay the full price for both of them. We are extremely upset about this and do not trust any apple products anymore.

I have the 3 Nike sport series and same thing happened to me yesterday. I’ve had all series over the years and it never happened before. Yesterday I was outside and it completely shattered. The cost to change the screen is ridiculous! We have all

Apple products from phones to AirPods to iPads to a MacBook. I’m extremely disappointed in this Apple Watch and more disappointed in the customer service regarding this issue!

It‘s not a design fault, just simple engineering reality. Take a look at my comments apple watch sudden screen shatter and try to understand it is impossible to make a full feature smart device which will never break AND is acceptable to users. There will always be a weak point, or it will be too big, or too costly. The issue of Apple denying what sound like (from a one sided report) reasonable claims is something we can’t discuss within ASC rules, and certainly not without all the facts from both sides.

If you want to abandon Apple products I’m sure you will enjoy your data getting googlemined.

Your explanation sounds reasonable, however My watch screen shattered all over including around the edge and front while sitting on my charger overnight. The watch was working and was scratch and crack free when I put it on my charger. There was no external pressure or knocking bumping or even touching while my watch was on the charger yet it looked like someone smacked it with a hammer the next morning.

Yes, I'm a working engineer well accustomed to looking at electronics which have taken physical damage. Let me give you the paper analogy... try taking a piece of paper between your two hands and make it tear along more than one path to create 3 pieces. It is impossible because as soon as one path starts the line of least resistance is created. Likewise a crack in glass, I can accept there might be occasional spalling along the crack face but only one crack path unless there is external force.
