Can't drag and drop safari images to desktop

Hi,

I just updated my version of safari 10.1 and now I suddenly can't drag and drop images to the desktop.

I just keep getting the error report message popup.

OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Here is a clue...

I am on 27" iMac, late 2015, w/retina, El Capitan, Safari 10.1

Try this and maybe you can make some sense of it...

  1. System Preferences > Displays > Color (my default is iMac)
  2. Change Display profile to Generic RGB Profile (for example)
  3. Now try dragging and dropping in Safari

Were I an Apple engineer I would think I had a good lead here, can anyone shed some light?

OK, at the risk of sounding like a complete ***, but to keep other contributors appraised- my own issue has been exacerbated. As mentioned I upgraded to Sierra (at Apple's suggestion), and that DID solve the image drag problem (at least in a limited way), but the change caused a whole host of problems with my (M)AMP setup. I (with Apple) was UNABLE to resolve these issues and have now (Time Machine) reinstalled El Capitain and I am back at square-one, same as everyone else.

The good news, (if there is any on the horizon) is that I have an excellent senior Apple support rep who is working to resolve the matter. I promise, if nobody gets a fix out there on these boards first, I will post back with any useful info that comes my way.

Fingers crossed.

And that's EXACTLY the most likely risk I told them about when they "kindly suggested" me to upgrade my MacOS. You have to very very stupid to advise customers to get into a whole lot of problems like that just to try and elude the one single glitch a bad upgrade to your browser introduced. And you have to care very little about those same customers and how much you can hurt their everyday workflow.

I just hung up with an Apple Senior Adviser that called me this morning.

As expected he was really pushy to me to update to Sierra, because it was the only solution available now and probably in the near future. Mainly because "the engineering team has move to Sierra and isn't going to be more updates to El Capitan." pfffff

He was also pushy to me contact the company of the app that doesn't work well in Sierra.

I really don't know how to tell you guys, but I really thing this is a really fu** up way to thread customers, and I don't mean the guy that I speak to, that was really polite and helpful, but you don't break something and then move on to the next operative system.

I would really understand that Apple stop supporting El Capitan (even security updates) if everything is working fine. But this is not he case.

He was even suggesting to go back to a previous operative system version...

Again, we need more noise.

Enjoy guys.

lpuerto, this is very VERY VERY serious.

"the engineering team has move to Sierra and isn't going to be more updates to El Capitan"

Really?

Is this an official Apple statement?

This is something that can change many many things and can be BIG NEWS for people and market!

El Capitan released to end users on September 30, 2015.

Today is April 27, 2017, less than two years!

So, the question is: Should professionals move to other Operating System? And I don't mean Sierra...

Because if the support for an OS from Apple is about 2 years then this is not an OS for professionals!

I don't have a solution, but I can provide some additional information.

I'm running Safari 10.1 on El Cap 10.11.6 and am experiencing the same issue. It manifests as soon as the ‘drag’ operation begins, regardless of whether the cursor has reached the desktop or not. It also manifests if I try to drag selected text.

Because I'm running a dual screen setup (the iMac's own Retina screen, plus a secondary 'regular' resolution screen connected via a VGA - thunderbolt adaptor and set to extend the desktop) I've also been able to observe that whilst a given Safari window will exhibit the problem when located on the retina screen, if I move that same window to the regular screen, then dragging does not cause the crash. So it's clearly something specific to retina resolution screens, and specific to Safari (dragging an image from a Google Chrome browser window located on the retina screen works fine).

So far I've seen no solutions to this posted anywhere.

There is no solution. Apple implemented a security update to Safari which if you look in the notes of the update corrected a supposed drag and drop threat ( although it was marked URL not image). It is not specific to Retina, although you might be on to something. It may be that the screen resolution determines if it causes Safari to reload and or crash on drag and drop. On my dual monitor MBP 2012 non Retina and an external 2560pixel 27" monitor it only does this on the external monitor not the built in lower resolution MBP. And this was in El Capitan, as I have given up waiting and went to Sierra where it is fine since. Other browser in either OS were not affected, it is a Safari only bug.

I didn't want to go to Sierra, but it was easy for me to do. I only had one control panel that was not compatible. Apple is concerned with iOS, clients running desktops and laptops they are less concerned with....both hardware and soft.

I am not sure I understand what you are asking, but right now it would seem the best option is to back up your computer and then do a fresh install of MacOS 10.11 (El Capitan). If you have kept the installer (I did), it's easy enough. I just did excatly that on another computer, and then updated everything through App Store EXCEPT Safari, and presto. Of course, you then need to re-install everything you want or use, as well as copy back all your files, but it's not so much of a hassle. The easiest way is to just copy your entire user folder on a external drive, format the hard disk, install MacOS 10.11 from scratch, set up your user account upon first boot, and then copy your user folder back and reinstall any apps you were using. And, of course, fine-tuning the whole System and Finder Preferences back to the way you like it. The most tedious part for me was waiting over 2 hours for my user folder to get copied into a backup external drive (this will vary depending on your setup and how big your user folder is), but after that, formatting, installing, copying my user back and fine-tuning didn't take me longer than 3 hours, I guess.

The problem is if you didn't keep any previous installer, because if you go and download El Capitan again from your list of purchases at the App Store, odds are it will be bundled already with the latest Safari. Or maybe not, because this Safari 10.1 was not present in any of the full MacOS 10.11 installers, so maybe you can download MacOS 10.11 and just skip Safari 10.1 update, as I did on that other computer.

Apr 28, 2017 1:22 PM in response to JMM

Thx JMM. I have Time Machine. When it became clear Sierra was problematic with my (M)AMP setup and other stuff, I did an OS restore [restart-cmd-r] and restored the OS prior to the Sierra update back to El Capitan- what I am trying to find out is if I can do similar again, but this time take my system restore date/version to a date prior to 3/28. I have looked in Time Machine and there is a backup dated 3/23, I have checked (cmd-i) the version on Safari at this point and it is showing as version 9.1.3, i.e.; before all the issues with 10.1 (as is present in all later backups). So, if I were to do an OS restore to the version at 3/23 would this return me to a (drag and drop) working version of Safari? Is this possible? Will it work? Just interested to find out if anyone has tried this.

Very very serious.

Maybe Apple wants to make everything work as in iOS and iDevices universe.

It seems that this is extremelly profitable and they are thinking of applying this to OSX and Macs to see if it will make them such a good profit too.

Well… I don’ t have the budget to follow an upgrade race like this, upgrading my Macs and all of the software so often costs much more than buying a new iDevice…

Drag’n’drop from Safari may not be much of an issue; what and how they will do something about it will say something about the things we must expect to come…

And I can’ t even think of suddenly having to face what iOS 4 did to iPhone 3G…
