You should certainly buy whichever phone you feel best meets your needs.

I also observed same issue with the Iphone 7 plus under IOS11. However, there is an alternative solution apart from restarting the phone once it issues the warning of incompatibility. You can try unplugging and then plugging again the Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter instead of restarting phone and it works fine. Though a very inconvenient and impractical solution, also prone to damage the lightening connector after excessive use 😟

I've been an andriod and pc user forever. Until 13 days ago I had never owned any apple product. I know how proprietary Apple is about their systems. I like the pc world because it's wide open, anyone can make a product and it works on everyone's system. 13 Days ago my android quit. It overheated. So I went to best buy and decided to give Apple a try. I came home with the Iphone 8 and fell in love with it. I immediately lost the headphone adapter so I can't connect my phone to my stereo in my truck. No problem, I thought, I'll just hop over to Amazon and order a new one. Sure enough, there are plenty on Amazon and I found a good deal . Two for 18 bucks and I can charge my phone while using the headphone jack. Today my cords showed up! I plugged it into my phone, plugged my oxtail in to the cord and started to listen to pandora on my car stereo. Yay! It worked! and then it stopped. With a message on my phone that said, "This accessory is not supported by this iPhone". I listened to Pink Floyd for roughly 1 1/2 minutes before the message appeared. So my fears of Apple's insistence that only 'Their' products be used has come true. So this weekend, I will, with a heavy heart, be taking the phone back to Best Buy and exchanging it for the S8 and freedom. I was so impressed by this phone that I was going to buy an iPad this black friday. But I'm going to get a surface pro instead. Thanks, but no thanks Apple.

These are adapters that are not “active” but rather passive so therefor far from potentially damaging the iPhone. This is just Apples way of encouraging you to purchasing thier “magic” product. If anything, it would damage the headphones, not the iDevice.

This move from Apple is not well thought out and will ultimately hurt Apple in my opinion. Do they not realize how many people bought third party Lightning accessories that provide a function that many times Apple doesn't even offer OEM, nor those with MFi certified accessories even provide?

Seems pretty dumb to **** off a bunch of loyal Apple users by deactivating what otherwise worked fine and provided flexibility in functionality.

I used a third-party Lightning to aux analog audio with charging capability in my commute car that worked flawlessly. Now I'm stuck to spend $40 for a Belkin dongle that hardly has stellar reviews, have to use an additional Lightning to analog adapter, and burns another hole in my pocket.

Yep I was very happy using my SMSL m6 dac to listen to music at my office. I was using an inexpensive lightning otg cable. Now after a few seconds I get the device not supported error. This seems like a pretty bad way to treat loyal customers, if ios updates are going to break things we have no choice but not to update our devices leaving them with unpatched security issues.

My iPhone7+ currently running on iOs 10.3.1

When i hear music for 2-3min it stops and says "this accessory may not be supported"

Then i couldn't use the volume up/down and play pause button

Anyone knows what's going on here and how to fix it?

iOS 10.3 is not compatible with almost all third party adapters released before the 10.3 update. However, there are some companies who have updated their adapters and have made them compatible once again. Their adapters are relatively cheap ($8 - $15). Check eBay.

Agree, the Belkin one universally gets bad reviews and lots of units stop working after a few months. At least Apple should give us a reasonable option other than 3rd party garbage....I'd be willing to pay one time for something that works......

I have the exact problem. The only difference is I never had the chance to try it in previous versions of iOS. I just received my 3rd party aux-to-lightning. Same problem, listening for a short period, and then the error happens.

In other words, your post helped me identify if it was a hardware problem or software. It's clear now. So what do we do?
